Here at A Farm In The North we live at 59 degrees north in the majestic and awe inspiring Orkney archipelago. I do many crafts with my main craft being blacksmithing. I am also building a small permaculture homestead here on our 5 acres

Glad you think so!
Love it 😍
Thank you! 😊
very nice work
Thankyou 😊
That's really cool. Quite a simple design and implemented very well.
I'm learning to do similar things, so would really appreciate a could of pointers.
What are the tips that you're using for smoothing? They have quite an interesting shape, don't look like normal sandpaper drums I'm used to.
Also, what is the paint that you're using? Is it just very watered down acrylic? Or something else?
Hi there, I've answered the paint questions on another thread on this video.
I use a small dremel flap wheel for the sanding. They come in various grits and I find they last a lot longer than the sanding drums.
Only tip I could give is to practice, nothing comes without practice, do that and I'm sure you'll be great before long.
All the best
@ found it, thanks! Thanks for the clarification!
what did you use for the black paint?
It's a matt black paint meant for metal, but I find it works really well on the antler aswell, it's quick drying, absorbs nicely into the outer layer of the antler, dying it, and is really hard wearing.
@@afarminthenorthDid you use an oil based black paint, an acrylic paint, or a latex paint? o
I believe it is an acrylic based paint
What was the black stuff you used? Im just getting into antler art.
Was just some black paint 😊
What is the black stuff you spread on the piece?
It is a black matt paint meant for metal, however it works wonderfully on the antler, it dyes the antler nicely and is really hard-wearing.
nice, what's the staining medium ?
Hi thankyou, I just use black paint to stain and fill the carved sections 👍😊
@@afarminthenorth thanks for the reply, nice work
Can I ask what bit you are using for engraving? Cheers from Texas
it is a busch round burr bit, not sure on the mm of this one, but quite small, maybe 1.8mm or 1.2, hope that helps
I’ve just bought some antlers and they smell like shit (probably from the marrow) any yips of getting rid of the smell?
I sometimes get this aswell, I'm not sure why, although when I do get one that smells off I just bin it. 99.9% of antler I get doesn't smell at all. Maybe you just got a bad batch.
ill test it on wood first.. antlers arent cheap to buy, if u cant find them..
Yeah testing kn wood first is good idea, just try some simple designs to get used to how it all works 👍😀
Promo-SM 😈
👍
im not the best or even good at carving, doesn't come naturally to me, lets just say!!! LOL
Took me some practice, I wasn't great when I first started 😅
