It's funny because I feel that the writing process is the most difficult part for me, because it is the moment where I have to bring my story into existence. My favorite part is editing the 2nd draft because that's the more relaxing part where I get to think about the beauty of the words and see my text as a whole. There isn't as much pressure any more. I don't know if anyone else feels this way.
I like your take on perseverance. Well said! When I went back to school later in life. My school had to teach us how to study. How to take a test. It may have sounded academic, but it gets away from you, if its been a while... Oh , there were LOT of not fun parts, but that is part of the complete package. I retired to our farm in 2016, except for working at a local academy, until March 2020, due to the pandemic. It was safer to stay on ur 350 acre farm and pull the woods in around me. Then I started unpacking my retirement bucket. It contained water color art, pen & ink, lots of reading, writing poetry ( hard for me!) writing memoirs of my life in England, whether just for me. And my favorite, is writing short stories of rural New Hampshire life. You have pin pointed the encouragement factor, to just set out and see where it takes you! ~ Diane
I appreciate these podcasts so much! I haven’t been writing for awhile now, but I still enjoy listening to each one you guys post. It’s giving me inspiration to jump back into my story :)
I find this topic funny. Watching you two is what gets me inspired to get back into writing. Whenever I feel I start losing interest I watch your videos and it gives me the creative boost I need.
This is fascinating! I find, having ADHD, that I have trouble finding motivation to sit down and work on the writing I WANT to do (instead of watching music videos or something), and I have trouble with perseverance, where I have to see the task through. I've been working on one particular novel for fourteen years and I'm in the third draft but only 7 chapters in with about 33 left to go. I want so badly to finally introduce these new and revised characters into the world and show my family I'm not a DNF-er, and also show myself that. But I also want to spend hours working on another novel or staring at a third novel's MC's class schedule or designing that school's uniform for the fifteenth time because I always think of a new variation and I never write it down to see if I've done it before, etc. Or I have days where I don't have work, and I put on Abbey's lofi writing video and I tell my friends I'm writing so don't bug me, and I get a lot of work done...for an hour and a half. Its so disheartening to never live up to what I want to do, even something as simple as write one dream sequence. I finally medical insurance again so I'm going to be talking to a doctor about medication so that will hopefully help, but I also want to find the strength within me to overcome this weakness. This podcast was so helpful in reminding me that nothing is easy, but its always worth it, so I just have to keep showing up and keep trying. Getting even one word done a day counts as progress so if I show up day after day, the book will eventually be finished and I can move on to the next one in the line.
I have struggled with perseverance as long as I've been writing, but I've been getting better slowly but surely. I'm definitely going to keep your advice in mind! Also, I just read Abbie's book, 100 Days of Sunlight!! Once I started it, it was just about impossible to put down. It kept up me up into the early hours of the morning reading because I had to finish it before I could manage to sleep. I adore it so much, it was 100 times better than I could have imagined it (Westess forever! I love the both of them so much). I And, it is quite literally the most aesthetic book I've ever read. The cover, the settings, the word choice, the language style, literally the whole entire book was so aesthetic and the aesthetic was so unified, it felt like it tied into the whole book and the theme so well. I just love it. Definitely going to give Kate's books a shot too, and read Abbie's new one!
I've been feeling the pressure, mainly because I'm so far into the story, I'm not 100% where it's going to go next. I will say I've never been where I'm at in all my years of trying to do nanowrimo, I'm at freaking 40,000 words, which is bananas. But I'm very much a discovery writer, so I have no idea what's going to happen with the rest of the story. I needed this today to just trust in the process. Thank you both
Hey guys, I’m from Brazil and I’ve been doing Nanowrimo for almost three years in a row but I’ve never managed to complete the goal, and the letters have been helping me a ton! I would love an episode on how to pick between ideas and settle in an idea, really commit to it! I find this the hardest part, and I think it would be really nice to discuss 🥰
This was so great you guys! So much of what you are saying feels like it lines up very neatly with the research that Angela Duckworth talks about in her book Grit
Great podcast as usual! I have 1 thing to add to the movie montage discussion: ever notice how a movie montage is only like 60 seconds long but it’s most likely covering a long span of time in the protagonist’s process? welp the movie cut out the boring parts, since most of what they’re doing is prolly mundane and repetitive. But it’s all a necessary part of the process so they just show it all sped up. Whereas, in real life we can’t speed up our process into a movie montage. So anyway, sometimes reminding myself to embrace the mundane and enjoy it as part of the process (because within the mundane is where life is really built) can be helpful.
This was so needed! Thank you for sharing this and helping me feel not alone and empowered to keep going. Half way through NaNo and feeling tired, but I’m inspired to finish!
So appreciate this candid discussion and the tips to get through these moments! Even though I'm not a novelist (I'm a tv writer), it's easy to feel overwhelmed with creating art in a condensed time period. Thank you so much for the inspiring words!
Thank you so much girls! You seem to know exactly the kind of writing advice I need at certain moments haha This one is exactly what I need at this moment. 😂❤
Hi Great Duo! I'm Grace from the Philippines. This is my 2nd time to comment here. You two rock! 😃 👍 You'll never guess what I do to persevere and be motivated right now...watching or at least listening to your channel when I'm not writing and doing something else like house chores. 😄 I do take a break and do physical activities--we all need to. But while doing them I'm also brainstorming my ideas and making a mental note. It helps my mind wander off from the boring, mundane things I'm doing to a more fantastic world. Aside from your videos I listen to epic music to awaken my imagination. When I heard this strategy from Abbie I was happy because I'm already doing it before and proves that I'm not alone with that strange motivation. I was beginning to think I'm weird. 😅 I'm also hoping one day, once I finalize my overview draft I will be more confident enough and able to join your communiry and share what I'm currently working on. It's a sci-fi fantasy fiction.😄 Stay safe you two gorgeous writers and thank you for sharing all your wonderful knowldeges and keep rocking!✊😊
Could you do a video on how to edit your own book without the need of anyone else being the editor, I'm not willing to let anyone else change my book it all has to be 100% done by none other than, me!
Definitely needed this podcast, because last week during NaNoWriMo, I was losing steam. Even with posting on my YT. Reclaiming my time and grit!

I really like what Kate said - "Success is not an overnight thing" I'm going to write that down and remember that. ❤️

I'm busy writing the training montage and feeling completely meh about the whole thing. This has been incredibly helpful. Thank you!

I think Abbie looks a bit like Keira Knightley in this video. 🤩
💜⚡
Did Abbie dye her hair?
That was amazing but of no use to me who is not even thinking about writing.
