I learned from David West that too much downward pressure on spindle can foil your attempt 2 ways: 1) fireboard gets burnished and makes poor dust; 2) dust overheats and won't ignite. I guess that explains why you should start slow and only pick up speed after lots of good dust is made and a little smoke starts to be ptoduced.
I hope if I ever have to depend on a bow drill friction fire I can have James there coaching me along! I’m glad to see you huffing and puffing to. It wears me out, and I’m not saying I can even do it every time at all. Last time I attempted I just got smoked and had to give up!
Thank you so much for.keeping your boot on doing this. I've seen to many youtube DA's set there and take their shoe and sock off then using the bare foot to hold down the board. That just blows my mind honestly.
Practice practice practice. Shorten up the bow, it doesn't need to be long or thick. A lighter shorter bow is easier to run, and as they are saying use the whole bow. Hand drill fires are short strokes compared to the bow drill so the bow doesn't need to be all that long. 2 feet long max. Its the change in direction that breaks off fibers that add to the coal along with the friction for heat you can achieve a coal with less energy.
Hey Jason, do you have any tips on carrying aluminum foil in a way that it doesn't require weaking the foil by folding it a bunch of times? I was thinking of maybe taking a piece of bicycle innertube about 6 inches long and wrapping it with heavy duty foil and sercuring it with some ranger bands.
Honestly no. It seems that the stuff just gets damaged no matter how you carry it. To be honest I haven’t had too much use for aluminum foil even during survival scenarios. It has its uses for sure if you are creative but generally I can do without.
@@ONThree totally fair maybe I should look at rotating it out of my kit too because it just gets destroyed in my daypack. Thanks for the reply, man. Appreciate it.
@@blueridgerealtoryall need to! David west does a great job with the fire roll, and what to use in a fire roll that works, and what doesn't! I'd love to see Jason do a fire roll fire... in the woods. I definitely think he is capable. I've followed and tried David's different approaches for years now. If you don't believe me, look it up! There's a ton of knowledge out there and alot of lost information 🤔. The whole, this is what granny and grandpa did back in the day. Like processing chicken to eat. Papa had it done from breathing to pot in less than 10-15 minutes! That's where most should start. Learn to grow and harvest your own food... what made us all survive back during the depression and wars! Sorry for the book.
Jason, have you thought about making a bow socket insert for the "On 3" ulu or incorporating it in the center of the handle. Just a passing thought that hit me when I seen the steel bearing bock in the video
Ah the good ol’ bow drill. When it works you feel like a fire god when it doesn’t it’s the most frustrating thing ever. The annoying thing is it’s often very small things that make the difference between success and failure. Oh and finally getting the ember and a drop of sweat off your nose lands directly on it and screws it all up. 😢
Its definitely not as easy as yall make it look! And even if you have made 20 bow drill fires in the past, doesn't mean that you are guaranteed fire! But way to push through. Maybe you should quit bushcraft/survival and be a physical conditioning coach ..say.. in California! Thoughts?
@ONThree lmao 🤣 😂! Keep training, keep teaching, you never know when you are training John Wick, or John Trump, or John Salyer... the savior and defeater of the corrupt AI systems!

Good stuff, Jason!
Good to see some of the Georgia Bushcraft men
Good dudes!
good stuff
Thanks!
That class was a minute ago😂. Good work.
Good informational video, thanks for sharing, YAH bless brother !

This is one thing I’m really wanting to try. Maybe once a bit of warmer weather shows up and I can get back to the woods for some camping.

One day I’ll apply your instructions to learning that method. In the meantime, I’ll let you do it for me ❤

The only reason I would take off my boot is if it was wet and muddy. That could soak the board and foil my effort.
@ONThree
Yeah but plenty on here do it. I think k they saw Cody Lundin or somebody like that do it roflmao. So many reasons not to do it that way.

Can I use a 2x4 and a battery powered drill ? If so yeah buddy I can light it up. Lol . great technique and basic skills mastery. Great job.
See ya on the next
Three-fourths inch on the fire board, did they give a diameter for the spindle?
About an inch.

👊🏻🔥👍🏻
Have you seen David West fire roll demonstrations on RUclips, invented by Russian prisoners it seems like the simplest way to develop friction fire.
That’s interesting. I’ll have to check that out

I have done the fire roll before. Pretty cool. Never in the woods. More as a party trick. Worth investigating more for sure.
Are those drews boots on his feet?

That’s a pretty good idea. Would need a sturdy sheath design. I’ll think on it. Thanks!

I don’t know my wood. What wood are you guys using? I’d guess cider, but I don’t know. Thanks The guys were real supportive- pretty cool 🫵👍
Western red cedar I believe.
Yes. Cedar
This was my question as well
@@ONThree thanks
