It is so funny that Jen says she does not like poppy seeds and then says she has never had a poppy seed kolac....so where the hell she tasted them, that she is so sure it is just a weird, tasteless thing. But it seems that there is some sort of prejudice in the U.S. women toward them: I remember an expat journalist from the U.S. trying to convince Czechs that poppy seeds are not to be put into any desert or pastry, because they are just NOT. Guess it was the last food advice article she ever published. Imagine a Czech writing into a major lifestyle magazine in the U.S. that peanut butter "just is not a thing, you have to wake up, stupid yankees".

In the US, poppy seeds are only used whole and are put in lemon muffins and on top of bagels - and UNGROUND poppy seeds are pretty tasteless, but the ground poppy seeds used in Czech in Kolace or buchti or makovec are DELICIOUS!

Czech Blue Poppy is a Czech variety of poppy with a very low alkaloid content! This variety is suitable for food use, with specific taste, which has a long tradition in Central Europe. It has a protected geographical indication in the EU too. Poppy is especially rich in iron, zinc, calcium, potassium, magnesium atc., and healthy fats. It is used whole (sprinkling bread) or ground (fillings, etc.).
Watch out for pot-bellied poppies and mixtures with other (!) imported varieties. In some countries, they do not know the food poppy, they live in the error that it contains opiates, as they are used to with the technical poppy in their country. The Czech Republic is the largest producer of edible poppy seeds in the world. Most of the poppy grown is exported. The value of exported Czech poppies exceeds the profit from the export of Czech hops.

And not just the old classics (szukać), but last time I had an appointment with my doctor and wanted to describe shortness of breath. In Polish you'd say "duszno mi". Well, it's not something I say everyday, so I didnt remember how it was in Czech and just used the czech sounding version of the Polish expression. The expression on the doctors face when I stated I often feel "dusno". She then explained to me what it means and we had a good laugh about it.

Anyway, on poppy seeds: I really like their taste, and they can be good both with sweet and salty food. I had some kaiser rolls with poppy seeds in the past, and I ate it with cheese and it was delicious. But most of the time it comes in sweet pastry, making it a bit more unhealthy because of all the sugar. However, it can be really tasty whether you eat koláč, závin or rohlíček, the key (for it to be noticeable in the taste) is that there is a lot of it. You won't be able to tell from just a few grains of poppy. As for the opium, it's mostly found in the green part of the plant, and mostly before the poppyhead is ripe. Poppy seeds are no drug :)

You do realize that the poppy seeds are ground when you put them on pasta or šišky, right? Therefore, there is no crunch. :) BTW, absolutely the best. In addition, I want to add that Czech poppy seed pastry tastes completely different than what you buy in the USA, so maybe, give it a try. My favorite 3-combination. Don't worry, you won't get high. I actually never knew that this was a problem until I was in the States, where everybody was - OMG, OMG now you will test positive. I have been eating this since I was 2. But, then again, you need to either make it home or buy something better than what comes out of the plastic bag in Albert. Also, the picture of "sádlo" that you had there is not sádlo, but margarine, it is rostliný tuk. I guess it is supposed to be used in the frier. If I saw that I would probably think - a kid was sent to the store to get it, stopped there and forgot he had it, later was running back. Or somebody repacked the bag to carry it home and forgot, another option is a foreigner bought it, thinking it was something else. And falling bag with meat, I get it. I did this myself - not with meat, the only difference I live in a house, so it will mostly fall in my backyard. There is never enough room in the fridge, especially if you have people coming and preparing a large meal.

The game changer about poppy seeds is that the Czechs CRUSH them (they mill/grind them in a grinder) which is how they extract the flavor from them. Without THAT process the poppy seeds would be useless for the pastries they're used in. And that procedure makes the poppy seeds SOOO flavorful. I can't believe in all your time there you haven't tried a poppy seed-filled something. The filling is sweet and quite nice. Nudle s makem, however, was never one of my favourite meals, and I can't say I recommend trying it. You should have watched Forst with Czech dubbing to work on your Czech 😉 Isn't there a Czech fairytale where sausages fall from the sky? 😂😂😂

Hello, my favorite food is noodles with poppy seeds or potato gnocchi (škubánky) with poppy seeds... And what did I have for breakfast today? Yes! Bun (šáteček) with poppy seeds! But be careful, the poppy seeds must first be ground in a grinder and then added to pasta or buns. A certain amount of sugar is added to the ground poppy depending on how sweet you like it. Not sugar "krystal"! But fine sugar "moučka".
A bit of knowledge: However, there is very little morphine and codeine in the edible poppy grown in the Czech Republic. Decree No. 399/2013 Coll.[10] allows a limit of 25 mg of morphinan alkaloids per 1 kg of poppy seed.
So in order to feel the effect of the morphine in the poppy, you would have to eat such a quantity that the amount of poppy would kill you before you would feel the first effect of the drugs... 🙂

6:06 There is an easier and free solution to Audible's region block: just input into audible a fake USA address on your debit/credit card settings (ideally in state with 0% VAT). And if Amazon really doesn't want your money, there are certain "bays"...
13:32 It's a children/quick meal. You just boil some noodles, at the same time melt the butter in small cup on the lid of the pot with noodles, and when it's done, you just flavor the noodles with milled poppy seeds, sugar and melted butter... Just quick and easy, no science needed.
20:41 Well, acciendents happen. If you just don't have enough space in the fridge and its winter outside, why not put your food outside of window? My dad certainly did so, when we spending spring school vacation with us in the mountains skiing. Just be careful of beer bottles - the iced beer inside is stronger than a beer glass...

Regarding the poppy seeds debate. I work in a supermarket (Lidl) in the center of Prague. Often times in the baking section of the store no less. So I do sometimes get asked what the various poppy seed flavored products taste like and I am always at a loss. My best explanation is they taste a bit sweet, but really I always just took poppy seed desserts as a fact of life. Only recently, because of my interactions with tourists, did I find out that poppy seeds are pretty exclusive to Czechia. I mean everyone likes to boast about our beer consumption, which is large on per capita basis. But doesn't even make the top 10 when we account for the total sum. However Czechia is actually like the largest nation in both poppy seed production and consumption. Not every year, but for such a small country I felt like this fact should be way better known than it is.
PS: poppy seeds with butter, sugar and unsalted pasta are one of those dishes that you wouldn't try on your own accord, but since it's one of the meals that gets rotated as a school lunch most Czechs will have tasted it and it's surprisingly very good, although I like the quark variant more. While on the topic I would wholeheartedly recommend "Škubánky s mákem". Not very common meal nowadays, but once again something Czechs will probably eat in the school cafeteria. I don't like sweet meals in general so I can't say I would have them often. But man are they great if done right.

"Drug effect" of poppy seeds comes after eating like five kilogram of that thing or drinking watter, in wich the five kilogram was inside (like a tea). Few gramms are harmless. BTW, the poppy seed on pies, or pasta is sweet, not tasteless.
It is funny, how the group of people, who (historicaly) did not use the ingredience, tends to dislike it or belive said ingredience is not ussefull.

Idk what kind of "mak" you had, Jen, but it has distinct flavor. It has to be mixed before use,the poppy seeds are crushed and release its oil and flavor. Dont compare it to stings like chia seeds, thats totaly diferent. Mák is best with cinamon and brown sugar and a pinch of salt, in my opinion and then you can add it to whatever.....Makove slíže? Best meal, in my opinion. Give it a chance, i dare you.

That story with a bag of meat falling from above reminded me of my childhood. When I was little we always had a lot of walnuts from both our grandmothers and we kept them on our balcony. I absolutely hated walnuts, the taste is incredibly disgusting to me. We lived in a panelák in 7th (8th US) floor and there was a pedestrian zone / cyklostezka around 30 meters from our house in the direction of our balcony and sometimes when my friend came over, we would throw the walnuts at the pedestrians bellow. We thought it was very funny how the people were confused what the hell was happening when the walnuts broke around them on the pavement. One time in winter my friend was over and because there were no walnuts, we were throwing potatoes. At one point, I threw a big potato at a girl and her mother who were riding bikes in a direction perpendicular to us. They stopped, got down from their bikes and looked around confused. Then, the girl walked few meters off the pavement into the grass, she picked up her hat from the grass, shook out something from the hat, put it on and they went on their way. Only at that moment I realized I actually shot the hat off her head with the potato while they were riding on a bike. Few centimetres lower and something terrible could have happened. Needless to say we never tried to throw anything off the balcony again.

The best thing about the trams is the fact that the count is setup like a sports score. You are not only counting how many people were killed by the tram, but also how many trams were killed by collisions with a human. Curiously, the later seems to just stay at zero. So maybe don't walk into it's way, you are not gonna win that match-up. Absolutely hilarious black humour and very Czech. 😀

7:45 it may be the "more pragmatic" reason... but also, if you really want to change somethig, why would you wait for new year? You dont need "new year resolution", you can just stop or start doing whatever you want whenever you feel like it. Do you want to stop smoking in april? Welp, stop in april. Do you want to start going to the gym in october? Do it in october. There is absolutly no reason to start with these goals specificaly only at new year. And because new year is only 1 day out of 365, there is less then 0,3% chance that you start with the resolution on new year and over 99,7% chance that you will start with the resolution on any other day. I think it is not pesimistic or "more negativ" - I would say that not limiting ourselfs specificaly to new year is actualy possitive and give us more options and higher chance that we achieve the goal.
