    For goats, I would just string some breakable wire across the bottom, and then replace it after a flood.

    I know this is not the perfect answer for everyone and it can be pricey, but putting a culvert large enough to drain the water can work. You get an added advantage of making it easier to drive your perimeter.

    • @pleasantplacesfarm
      @pleasantplacesfarm 3 года назад

      That's what we were considering but the cost is quite a bit higher by us. I have to haul in dirt to pack around the culvert.

    • @TheKajunkat
      @TheKajunkat 2 года назад

      There are a lot of considerations when putting in a culvert, especially with creeks like this one that are prone to seasonal flooding. For example, if it plugs and forces water to rise upstream and damages someone's property you would be libel. It could also wash out in a single flood event etc etc. They are great in some situations but I wouldn't risk it here.

    Keeping your livestock in can be done with setups like this, but keeping predators out is much more difficult. That's not as much a problem with cattle, but it is with sheep. Stray dogs and coyotes will easily get in through this type of crossing, unfortunately.

    • @johnscarboroughregenerativ7240
      @johnscarboroughregenerativ7240  2 года назад

      The goal is not to keep predators out The goal is to protect the livestock when they get in. You're not going to keep predators out of 200 plus acres You can't afford it. You're a lot better off to just have a really good dog of your own.

    How far apart are the 2x4 how did you space between each set of boards?

    • @johnscarboroughregenerativ7240
      @johnscarboroughregenerativ7240  3 года назад +2

      I believe I put 2 2+4s together as you can see in the video but then the spacing like you’re asking I think is about a 2+4. With a part I am planning to make a video on the construction and measurements of the street crossing

      All you need is a piece of pipe that is in larger diameter than The main piece of pipe running across. You can also stretch a cable really tight across and tie something to that in the same way

    I hoped this would be helpful but it isn't, because I have a creek that is over 60 feet wide where I need to but up legal fencing where you have to have a post every 30 feet. During monsoon season we can get floods through the creek over 10 feet deep. Do you have any suggestions?

  • @Growmap
    @Growmap 4 года назад +1

    Ok, but why don't the cattle just push on the boards and walk out? This actually works for cows? I suspect it won't work for horses.

    • @johnscarboroughregenerativ7240
      @johnscarboroughregenerativ7240  4 года назад +2

      It works extremely well for cattle because if cattle cannot get their head through it they will not go through it has been there for seven years and never had an issue in the summertime when the creek is dry the cattle will actually lay down in there right next to it but as I stated in the video if there was a road on the other side of this then anytime I put the cattle in that pasture I would probably put some hot wire down there and I think it would work for goats and sheep as well because goats and sheep don’t like water anyway but as for horses I think you’re probably right it would not work

      @@johnscarboroughregenerativ7240 Do you have any suggestions for a creek crossing that would keep horses in? I have a creek like that one and at least once a year a big storm will take out the fence there. I think your idea might work IF nothing got stuck under the boards. But if a log or branches kept all the boards from hanging straight down, my one escape artist might try to get out there.
      The best way I've ever seen was on a big cattle ranch. They just built a huge dam up from the fence and backed the water up into a really large pond that slowed the water down. When big rains came, their fish would wash onto my pasture. Unfortunately, I don't have the financial cashflow to have a dam like that built.
