  • Austin Symphonic Band. November 22, 2015 concert at Austin ISD Performing Arts Center in Austin TX. ASB performing Rippling Watercolors by Brian Balmages. [NOTE: Click 'more' to read the program notes.] Music Director Richard Floyd conducting. Concert title: "A Fall Tapestry". Videography by Golden Arm Media in Austin TX. Audio recording by On Site Digital, Randy Bryant owner.
    Program notes by David Cross:
    Rippling Watercolors (2015)
    Brian Balmages (b. 1975)
Brian Balmages is the Director of Instrumental Publications for the FJH Music Company. Active as a composer, clinician, and conductor, he is well-versed in every aspect of his music-from score, to classroom, to stage. About "Rippling Watercolors," he writes the following:
"The title comes from a range of inspiration. I often get asked about my last name. As most can imagine, there are very few of us left in the world. At present, my wife and I are one of only two couples in the United States who carry on our family name. My cousins Ben and Carrie on the west coast are the other couple, and they now have two beautiful girls. We all share a lot of beliefs-we encourage our children to be creative, spontaneous, and we enjoy watching where their imaginations take them. The idea for this piece came from a simple set of watercolors. When children get hold of these and use their imagination, the most amazing things can happen. Children can see things that adults never see. They open their minds while we help them grow and learn. With a little imagination, these watercolors can become a magnificent sunrise or sunset over the ocean, a gorgeous view from the mountaintop, or an image of a supernova in space. The smallest drop can change the pattern and create something entirely new, either with a brush or entirely with nature. It is my hope that Lily and Charlotte grow up with an infinite palate of watercolors, and that every drop creates a new, fantastic world."
"Rippling Watercolors" is dedicated to the composer’s cousins Lily and Charlotte Balmages, who, combined with his two boys, form the next generation of the Balmages name in the United States.

As a member of this band , thank you all for listening. Music doesn’t have to end when you leave school. We play because we love music and share this with everyone on stage here and we love the special musical moments as if we are still in school. Keep playing and find a community band Btw I play first trumpet and many of us have been in ASB for years

Never overlook the power of simplicity.
I played this in my middle school district honors band at their last ever concert, and the utter simplicity of the piece, despite how much power and emotion it projects, makes this one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever played in band.

I just returned from my daughter's final concert band performance as a high school senior and they played this song. Such a beautiful piece and they played wonderfully. I did fine until I saw the tears flowing down her cheeks and dad lost it. The way that music can grip your heart and soul is priceless. I'm so very proud of my little girl....thank you for the memories sweetheart.

I played this piece two years ago. It was the first song that I had ever cried while playing. This song (along with two others) got my band a spot on a national stage last year. Even listening to it now it just brings me to tears. This is absolutely a piece that has the power to take your breath away, and if you ever play this piece, please do not neglect your time with it.

I just played this song yesterday for a region 12 band concert. From SAN ANTONIO TEXAS. I am flute 4 . This piece is so beautiful written by brian balmages while watching his 2 young daughter painting with water colors between ages 2-4... It shows the story behind infinite possibilities of childhood. I love this piece. I cried on stage.

To all of the middle school kids who have play this piece kudos to you if you guys sound like that. Even though the music itself is easy, the blend and balance of every instrument takes a lot of skill. Crescendos and decrescendos can get very tricky in a piece like this.

This piece of music really takes me back to my Junior year of High school. I got to play this at our UIL competition last year, and I had chills just now listening to it. The first time I played it, I was badly in chills, because at the time, my grandmother was at the hospital, but she passed a week later. This song reminds me of her everytime I play it, or even listen to it. I played the 2nd trombone part. Keep up the good work!

It would be a mistake to call this a simple piece. The harmonies are very rich and complex. Like fine wine or really good chili.
It is a great piece for young musicians. It shows how beautiful music, your music, can be without being technical, or lighting fast.
    As a "mature" musician: wow.

i don't get why people think this is beautiful. We play this in our advanced band and it sounds like crap there are notes all over the place that don't blend and it is not "rippling watercolors"
