im more concerned about how much distraction and flashing strobe lights are going on while I'm trying to goddamn eat. Its a ADHD incrubator for your kids, get them unable to focus early and set them up for a life of disney distraction!
What’s crazy is this ship seems to be a microcosm for Disney as a whole over the past decade: bigger and better on paper, but more commercialized and missing the care and vision that made them so successful before.
Disney released a book about the design of the new Triton-Class ships, and one chapter is titled, "if it ain't broke, fix it anyway." That is the perfect description of where they went wrong with the Wish. They knew some things needed improvement, but instead of making small changes and seeing how they work in reality, they went overboard (pun intended) and rearranged literally everything. It seems almost random what things ended up better and which things became worse. The only intentional improvement the Wish has over its predecessors is that the crew accomodations are much roomier and more thoughtful.
Haha I totally noticed the same thing! I’ve been trying to find a copy of that book since I thought that chapter title was so on the nose on what’s wrong
There is an IDEOLOGICAL REASON - yes, politics - for the "fix/CHANGE it anyways", because a) Disney has been taken over by left-wing ideologies/activists and b) the correct definition for left-wing includes ANTI-TRADITIONALISM / "change for change's sake" / PROGRESSIVISM. So "keeping things like they were" is not part of their mindset, even when it isnt about social engineering, which they are deeply involved in.
Any cruise trips under 7 nights just seems completely pointless to me. Ships are so big, you need more time to be able to properly explore and experience every space. $1700 for a 3-nighter in an inside room is just ludicrous
If I lived close to a port I'd be willing to do a shorter cruise, but I have to drive at least 500 miles each way. But ya 1700 for 3 nights is.. Just not something I can justify right now. I get Disney cruises are different but damn.
I agree that 3-4 day cruises aren't worth it, but only on larger ships like Independence of the Seas. I feel Carnival does short cruises right by using their smaller, older ships
I can't believe that MASSIVE, ridiculously expensive room (more like huge apartment) doesn't have a sea view... on a CRUISE. And people on every deck can LOOK IN YOUR EXPENSIVE ROOM. That is simply insane to me.
Watching this from Europe, it's so utterly baffling to understand the pricing and target market for these ships. Disney always struck me as a very mainstream brand, obviously premium but still affordable and accessible to everyone. I stayed one night at Euro Disney when I was 12 and it was honestly one of the best memories of my life. However it was not super expensive, more of a premium 4-star place that you save up for and enjoy as a treat. Who are the people paying five figures for 3 nights on a floating man-made Disney branded ship?!! Surely they must be in the top 1% of earners, but I cannot imagine an investment banker or brain surgeon thinking a Disney cruise is the best holiday experience they've always wanted, EVEN if you have kids. Just like the options you listed, if you are willing to pay 2-4K a night, you are literally pushing the highest limits of luxury in the world. You can sit in a jacuzzi over the rooftops of Florence or get picked up by a water taxi to a private island in Venice. Reenact Lost in Translation in Park Hyatt Tokyo or have your personal butler at The Ritz London. Why anyone would spend that living in the smoke stack with hundreds of people staring in at you is...just...O_O
Disney Addicts are a different breed of stupid, they will spend YEARS saving up for what they believe will be is a "once in a lifetime" experience when all it is, is an overpriced hotel, a super busy amusement park, where you cant even pay to skip the lines anymore, you will STILL spend 1 hr-2 hrs minimum for riding the big name attractions, overpriced food and basic necessities, overpriced merch (much of which is quite low quality, and literally, only for the memories, I would know after dropping 400+ dollars on my trip to California Disney, this past Christmas. Universal Studios was Amazing, and the merch was also higher quality, and lower priced, compared to everything I found at Disney)
Probably not the Top 1% (because they're wealthy enough to have their own vessels), but yeah, this seems like it's for the _favorably_ wealthy in general.
I think we can expect the prices for the Wish to go down in the future years and be on the level of cruises on the Dream/Fantasy. Right now, the people are mostly paying for being on the new ship. But, usually, Disney cruises, while expensive, offer a good value for money. For instance, I was on the Magic this summer and we paid around 300$ per person and per night. It's pricey, but you have everything included, the food and entertainment is far better than on the other cruise lines, and Disney includes a lot of stuff that other cruise lines make you pay (like for instance, when you arrive to any port, you have free shuttles for the nearest city center, while on other major cruise lines you'd have to pay around 15$ per person). Right now, I feel way less ripped off on a Disney ship than I do at Disneyland Paris or Walt Disney World
@@jayward8237 5k drinks used to be limited to places like Dubai and Vegas whose very gimmicks are irresponsible spending. Odd they’ve now made it into Disney. Says a lot about what Disney is more and more becoming
Actually it can be a huge advantage when designers are not familiar with the subject... It opens up for new an innovative ideas. Virgin Cruises is demonstrating that very well. The mistake made here is simply the profit driven decisions 🤷🏼♂️
She is the lead designer? The advantage when designers are not familiar with the subject should probably be left to the associate designers... not the lead one. The lead one should be the most familiar but be open to these innovative ideas from fresh eyes. Arguably, she had the one job where she can go on cruises for work reasons. Homegirl passed up the chance to just go on cruises on company dime for actual research purposes.
I can't get over the guy who was just showing the donut. I love to think that that's his only job on that entire ship. The moment someone falls off the ship and needs to be thrown a rescue ring, it will be his time to shine.
Well I mean the only people able to go on these trips are already hardcore Disney fans and got money. The average everyday family can no longer afford to go to anything disney related, they’re being priced out on purpose. Source: worked there
Like the ones that somehow go there every single day, for a living, to make a 10 minute video showing the exact same attractions, same hotels and exact same food experiences?
@@Xavanux Believe it or not, when I worked at Disney World, the cruise line was seen as "budget friendly" and a "good deal, compared to $10,000+ for a week at the parks (this being 2012 money): the ungodly sums now, are to a whole new level.
I had no idea I would ever want to watch a review of a cruise ship, but this was so well done I got pulled in. The writing, pacing and execution made this a story. Great job.
Aquamouse had so much potential. Imagine if it was almost completely glass and the conveyor belt slowly moved you around to let you take in the ocean around you, almost like a lazy river suspended above the ocean.
I still can't get over why they have a $4,000,000 dollar necklace for sale on this ship. Do they really expect some random passenger to have the money and the impulse to buy it? Not to mention the people who would have both are most likely never going to take a Disney cruise since they likely own their own yacht, since you can buy a fairly nice on one for that same price.
I’m not going to lie: the lobby/main atrium for the Wish is absolutely stunning, and it’s a nice touch to mix up the very much wood/classical theming from the previous ships. That aside, it almost seems joyless? Bland? Idk what the right word is, but after the first day I’m certain it must feel much to clean
The elevator buttons genuinely broke me. Feels like the perfect microcosm for Disney both prioritizing tech over experience and not considering how actual human beings will utilize a space.
PLEASE DO MORE TRAVEL REVIEWS. This was awesome. Very detailed, very thorough and honest. As an adult with no kids I have sailed the Magic and Wonder. This was very helpful and we will definitely look at the Fantasy.
Definitely go on the fantasy! One of my personal favorites (as a platinum member) I definitely think it's easily the most timeless exciting and good for all. (Including different financial classes!)
The Avengers restaurant looks absolutely dreadful. The water slide, which should have been amazing, looks like it's hardly worth going on once. I'm glad you noticed and reported on the noise pollution. I find that kind of thing super annoying but every time I'm in a situation like that I see plenty of people who don't even seem to notice.
Seems like part of an overall broader trend where Disney, which used to have meticulous attention-to-detail and top-notch quality, is letting things slide. All for more money.
Honestly, this whole ship just feels like a lawsuit waiting to happen. With the stairways that aren’t fully accessible to all decks, elevators that cannot be filled with folks in case of evacuation, and the ship being overall inaccessible and difficult for folks with disabilities screams mass casualties in the case of an accident.
It's even worse that they EXPLOIT the idea of (supposedly) "supporting" Wish Kids (Make-A-Wish) but... ignore or deliberately, maliciously exclude their accessibility needs. Not wants, NEEDS, that are legally protected. Where's a zero entry family pool? Water wheelchairs? Now THAT'S innovative for cruises. Only ABLE BODIED kids can use the showy but USELESS slide/stairs. Sucks to be you, sick or disabled kids, no fun for you, you don't matter. No elevators for you. Oh, but smile pretty for our exploitative ads where we pretend we "care"... The Marvel restaurant is LOUD, crowded, inaccessible, and grotesquely TACKY. The "Star Wars" lounge is pathetic. Nothing is innovative or well designed. Traffic flow was chaotic. The upcharge restaurants are a total waste, not a perk. This ship is a cheap, lazy, greedy, grasping failure. Not an improvement. Cruising was supposed to be relaxing, fun, elevated, innovative. And that laughable new slide in the tacky lobby? What a WASTE. One and done. Cheap. Minimal. Lazy. Not innovative. I don't know any DCL Gold+ customers who want to try this... monstrosity, especially considering it goes nowhere, on ridiculously short "cruises".
Just want to quickly say here that with the elevators, they will never be used in evacuations because it's very likely anyone using them will get stuck inside. But, in the case of drills and port days, it's generally very annoying for an elevator to not be able to be filled.
We actually switched from the wish to the fantasy yesterday for our first cruise next year. For the price of 3 days on the wish we were able to get a longer 6 day cruise for about the same on the fantasy. This review just confirms the decision as well
My father is the type to walk around and explore wherever he can, like if there's an unmarked, unlocked door he will just go in. I've never been on a cruise before, but if I were young again and went on an "adventure" with him on this ship, I'm certain he would get us lost in some crew-only area in less than 5 minutes.
Never thought I’d watch 45 minutes about a cruise ship I’ll never be on. But dang was this a fascinating look into what Disney is producing outside of film. I’m kind of wondering if Disneyland and Disneyworld are following the same generic design cues.
They are for sure, and it's a huge problem. As a theme park fan, I clearly recognize that what they're producing is bland mediocrity but people still seem to be eating it up.
I just spent $2,300 total for a 31 night Carnival cruise around Japan and across the ocean. No part of me understands why people are willing to pay the mouse tax.
Jake...as someone who works in architecture and design and as someone who has been on a number of cruises...this was a very well thought out analysis of the ship, it's layout, it's themes and design and the use of space. I agree with virtually all the points you made. Based on what was shown, this seems to me to be a case of "too many cooks". One of the things that destroyed the Disney Star Wars trilogy was that it felt like the story was put together in numerous board room meetings with multiple executives and film team members all throwing ideas on the table. This ship looks like it had the same problem. Instead of going to a company that designs cruise ships and builds them for clients, giving them some themes and concepts and letting them professionally design the ship. Instead, it looks like they worked off a set of plans from an existing ship, came up with all new themes, layouts and attractions and then said to the designers, "make it happen". A very confusing ship with too much time and money spent on some things and not nearly enough on others. Awesome video!
We sailed the Wish a few weeks ago - and I have to say…you hit the nail on the head with this one. It was our first DCL sailing and we left underwhelmed with the ship. We still had a great time but there was just something off with the Wish. Something to add here…we dined at Enchante one evening and my wife flipped out of her chair! They are very heavy chairs with only three skinny gold legs. The staff told us that someone flips out of a chair every night and they are still waiting for the new restaurant chairs to come in. We laughed it off but it summed up the Wish for us very well - poorly designed and thought out.
I hate that ur first DCL trip turned out that way. I personally recommend on of the older ships (I sailed on the Disney Dream and Disney Magic) if you ever wanna sail with Disney again. Price wise, the Magic is cheaper but judging from the design of the Wish, it would be a better experience as a whole
I'm so glad other people saw the issues on the Wish. We went on the 5th or 6th voyage of the Wish and hated everything about it. My family in total has been on 13 + Disney cruises and the Wish was a huge disappointment. The confusing layout, 0 midship elevators, poor adults areas, waited inline to get seated for dinner, the push for commercialization of jelwerly shops and designer stores, and we had terrible service. We have never complained about a Disney cruise EVER. I really hope something changes because we wont be returning to this new line of ships. Also on my trip we never got to ride the aquamouse because the line was over an hour every, every single day at all times to ride. I never experienced that on Dream or Fantasy. It was insane
Something I hope Disney realizes soon is that the reason they were successful was because of the experiences worth going back for. They’ve shifted to getting as many people there just to make a quick buck rather than giving those people the feeling of wanting to go back. It’s a shame really because it ruins already amazing places worth going back for to this shell of a former attraction
That's why I refuse to spend anything on Disney. They priced me clean out of their lousy theme parks so I don't even care about their cruise line. They only want the rich and famous. I don't care if they wind up having to sell off the many companies they've bought to pay the bills. They are OBVIOUSLY doing something illegal on the stock market because their stock always holds at $90 a share. Hahahahaha, I wouldn't touch the stock for even $50 a share.
My sentiments exactly! I was so disappointed in the Wish ! The elevators, the dining areas felt like they were trying to pack as many people in as they could. It was sooo uncomfortable
I believe that this ship was designed for First time Disney cruisers to pair with a Walt Disney World Vacation. For us Castaway Members, it's not really worth it.
Wow my family is considering going on another cruise soon. I, like you, was fortunate enough to spend the 2000s and early 2010s going on the first four ships and this video may have saved us a mediocre family trip. I'm thinking we have to book the older ships.
If I’m recommending any Disney ship to you I recommend the Disney wonder I’ve been on the ship 12 times, and each time is so great. All the staff are so nice and everything is like brand new, even though it’s a super old ship.
I like how you're like, "I'm very biased." I haven't been on a cruise and have no idea what's good. I like that you compared, contrasted, said the positive, the negatives and talked about expectations. I think it's very constructive to talk about how things can be done better. I'm glad someone out there is on these cruises, talking about it. I'd be the person who was irritated but wouldn't know better so everything would be "just fine."
I agree completely on the adult sections, that's the magic of Disney. The kids can go safely have fun and the adults can relax. If anything the adult areas should be better or at least on par with the kids areas, Disney knows this and I guess they forgot who was paying them.
‘You’re dead if you aim solely at kids. Adults are just kids grown up." "You have to appeal to the adult. The adults have the money, children don't have any money." ~ Walter Elias Disney himself
@@TriangleSquares Yeah, I'm autistic and I have hypoglycemia. I went to Disneyland a few days ago and it was my first time going in three years. I loved Galaxy's Edge and all the cool restaurants. But I realized afterwards that I probably would've had a horrific experience if I wasn't so well prepared and having a genuinely good day that day. If my blood sugar dropped and I was having seriously bad sensory issues, I would be absolutely screwed in the main park. California Adventure had a lot more actual meal food stands, but the lines were pretty long and the food was always exotic. I'm lucky I had a stable headspace during my trip because Disney sucks at accommodating for sensory issues, autism, and disability.
Same! The marvel one especially seems like an absolute nightmare to me. I tend to appreciate Disney's dedication to theming, but I really feel like they missed the mark with this one, and just made it incredibly overwhelming. Not even just for adults with sensory issues or autistic people in general - but even just for completely neurotypical KIDS. Sure, some kids will absolutely love it, but I'm just imaging the breakdowns you see from exhausted, sugar crashing, *overstimulated* kids at a Disney park, but happening in a loud, dark, windowless restaurant with inescapable noise and stimulation (I could be wrong, but there didn't seem to be any parts of this restaurant that were quieter or less overwhelming). Even if they didn't give a shit about being accessible -- and it's abundantly clear they don't -- you'd think they would *at least* consider the kid issue. It's a Disney cruise, there's gonna be a lot of kids, they know this and plan for it elsewhere. Was there really no one on their team who brought this up when they were planning these restaurants?? Also, I get that Marvel is incredibly popular and it makes sense that they'd want to incorporate it into a restaurant and certain areas of the ship, but not everyone going on a Disney cruise is a Marvel fan. There's ways to make a Marvel themed restaurant that's enjoyable for fans and non-fans alike, but this godawful experience with a blaring clip show (of movies with super loud fight scenes, not sure why they thought that was a good idea for a dinner show?) playing nonstop during the meal is not the way to do it.
I just want to say thank you for your honest reviews! I'm autistic and sensitive to loud noises and bright lights, so your attention to detail when talking about those things is very much appreciated. That Marvel restaurant sounds like a nightmare.
@@BrightSunFilms Honestly, the storyline and pacing of your documentary style videos are absolutely amazing, to the point where almost every other RUclips video feels amateurish by comparison. I know hard work plays into it, but you've undoubtedly got some real talent for this kind of stuff.
Back in 2016/2015 i got a make a wish sponsored trip on the disney dream and at the time i was 14 i think maybe older maybe younger, now it being pre pandemic everything was opened and i think my favorite part to this day was the free flowing ice cream and coffee bars, the teen place on that one was actually really really well put together the staff was super chill and amazing and actually managed to memorize my capuccino order i’d walk in and they’d ask and they’d have it ready in about three minutes, but honestly the dream was amazing i don’t think any ship could ever top that experience ever
This in-depth Disney cruise review is one of the most interesting travel videos I’ve seen in a long time, from anyone. I definitely didn’t think it was too harsh at all. You were fair with what you liked and what had potential, but honest with the flaws and bad design too. Those VIP prices for the most expensive suites are outrageous and I loved how you compared what else the same amount of money would get you elsewhere! Please do more like these in the future and thank you for all your wonderful and so informative videos and the work it takes to put them together.
Dude, absolutely. Please do more content like this. First of all, your Abandoned and Bankrupt serine are awesome. However, watching this clip, you should absolutely do more. Your in-depth look at what make Disney Wish what it is was great. You provided detailed observations of what the ship is like, and you did an excellent job of comparing to the baseline Disney experience on the older ships. Please take a cruise on an Oasis class Royal Caribbean and provide you insight. I never watch a clip that much more 20-25 minutes long. So I started this one with some hesitation. But I have no idea how the 45 minutes went by. Make more, please. We’ve been wanting to take a Disney cruise and Disney Wish, being their newest ship, was going to be our choice. It is clear to me that booking a cruise on one of the older ships will be far more satisfying. Thank you.
I LOVE your friend's reaction @ 38:34 when she got to try on the necklace! ☺❤ As far as the ship, it sounds like more of what I've come to expect from modern Disney: Overpriced but underwhelming.
Thank you so much for talking about this Jake. Seeing an honest opinion not clouded by influencers trying to get free tickets is refreshing. I personally love the Wonder, and seeing Disney make a worse product than they did 20 years ago is heartbreaking.
I really appreciate it too. I'm definitely going to choose a cruise on the Wonder if I can! Not Wish. This is beautiful, but so chaotic, and just.. stupid in so many areas. Common sense was lost in the planning stage
Just watching the flashing lights at 13:26 even without the original audio...I know I would lose my appetite and just want to go back to my room. That literally looks exhausting. More like a dance floor than a restaurant.
I haven’t been on any Disney cruise yet, but just by looking at what they were promoting for this Disney cruise, along with the videos I have seen of it online… I don’t think what you’re getting in this cruise justifies the price… nice to get Jakes perspective tho
The only Disney Ship I've been on was the _Wonder,_ when it did a cruise to Alaska in 2011. She was a beautiful ship, with just the right amount of homeliness and classic liner. That said, I was 14 when we booked, so I wouldn't know the price, aside from my parents thinking it was worth it. Shame to see the _wish_ doesn't live up as strongly to their legacy
savantics, a channel I was recommended did a long video on Disney's prices, and holy hell it's actually shocking how expensive some of the stuff is, and the trip as a whole
@@LunaTulpa I find it depends on the ship and destination. None of the cruises are CHEAP by any means, but looking at prices for the Wonder's shorter cruises, it could be worse, especially if you have a friend booking with you.
As someone who has yet to go on a cruise, this was an extremely informative video. Yes you were biased but that bias is based off of your previous Disney cruise experiences and the comparisons really gave reason to your bias which therefore provided a lot of information and context for someone who's never been on a cruise before. You made your bias clear, allowing viewers to make their own opinion on the specific topic at hand. Very well-done video (as ALWAYS) and very thoughtful commentary on your thoughts and opinions on the ship. (How many times did I say "bias" LOL)
Jake, I've been a subscriber of yours since pretty much the beginning, and the leaps you've made in presenting and video quality have been nothing short of amazing. I'm 48 years old and love your perspective on things. Keep up the great work and I cannot wait to see what you do in the future. BTW, your documentary about Six Flags New Orleans was awesome. I am a native of New Orleans and was there during Katrina. You did a great job with it!
I'm really surprised just how much of this they got wrong... Its kinda crazy to think how many people saw these design choices and thought 'yep, sounds good'
Disney is made up of more yes-men than ever before and it shows in everything they've been doing. Nothing memorable, nothing timeless, cheap, and dialed down for even more money. My wife and I cruised with Disney in 2012 and it was probably the best cruise we've taken. It's really really close with our experience with Princess. This ships interior accouterments just seem lesser than.
@@2006gtobob I don’t like how the land resorts have lost their detail. I opened Pop Century and loved how each decade’s rooms had decade-appropriate art. Now they have all been replaced with generic Mickey items in every room. There is nothing making the rooms unique. Or the Contemporary where they put in the Incredibles decor. I don’t want to pay $500 a night for what was supposed to be a “modern” resort to have Mr. Incredible watch me take a shower.
Bro. I don’t normally leave comments but I have to give you some credit here. Your videos are incredible. I really appreciate the detailed analysis, history and perspective you bring to your videos and your touch of nerdiness is enjoyable to watch.
I live in the UK in a town called Gravesend and, every now and again, we get one of the Disney ships moored up on the River Thames. I often wonder if they tell the passengers about the main fact linking Disney with the town, which is that Pocahontas is buried in the local churchyard....
Wow, thanks for this summation. As an architect, I’m baffled by many of the design and layout choices. Especially when it comes to those awkward and uncomfortable public/private clashes! (With the grand suite really taking the cake.) Or the poorly used windows, the blind doors, weird circulation… As a Disney fan, I’m saddened, as it is a noticeable step backwards from what came before. And, worst of all, with all the missed opportunities it feels incomplete. The whole thing is second-rate (and sometimes even lame). As a Disney shareholder, I’m frustrated because more and more I realize the recent leadership is not qualified to lead the company forward. This ship feels like the original California Adventure (or, more recently, Enchanted at the Magic Kingdom), where something was done on the cheap because “hey, it’s Disney, people will still come.” At least with Cal Adventure, Disney’s finances weren’t that great, but here, that is not the case. In the year prior to the pandemic, Disney gave away over two billion dollars to shareholders. $2B. One year. And they gave away about that much in years prior. Rather than spending the money to make true Disney magic they cut corners and rely on their uncreative notions and hubris thinking they know what people want and will tolerate. They are hyper fixated on short term profit and don’t seem to realize or care that they chose to be a part of a creative enterprise. It’s unfortunate, and I hope that the ship can be righted (totally not sorry for the nautical pun :P) before it fully runs aground.
30:42 holy crap, I permanently have “that was flurries of fun! You sled it!” Stuck in my head after spending my 20th birthday on the wish. God the whole ship was admittedly disappointing to me, like I still had a lot of fun and I definitely would return looking back, but my expectations were high for a reason.
This entire thing seems like an afterthought, it seems like there were multiple designers working on their own project not knowing what the others were doing and end the end they just said screw It let’s put it all in. At least they let your girlfriend try on that $4 million necklace!!
That staircase/elevator issue sounds like it would be a MASSIVE nightmare in case of an emergency. Imagine having to leave the ship, but getting lost because everything is so arcane.
20:08 imagine being inside of this metal tube they call a "ride" as the ship starts to tilt or you hear a loud boom and everything goes dark.. nightmare fuel
Thank you for this honest review. I read other reviews and even called Disney with concerns because I have mobility issues. Based on your review I'm hearing the same deficits from each of you. Our family was scheduled to sail the Wish but instead we cancelled the reservation today. We've sailed the other 4 ships and will instead sail the Fantasy again. She's our favorite too! You did an awesome job on this review and I look forward to others when they are appropriate for me. Thank you.
your comments about everyone being able to see in on the tower suite reminded me of something. at the globe theatre replica in london, the tour guides will point out the royal/vip seats. these were placed *behind* the stage, where the back wall/set would be today. which is ludicrous to pay for if you're going to see the play, but they weren't. they went there because that way everyone could see them, they were paying to be important and be seen and almost be part of the entertainment. perhaps the people who the tower suite is aimed at have the same philosophy. they want to be seen, they want everyone to know theyre there and have the money. its a "look at me, peasants" room.
What a great, thoughtful and detailed review! The ship however is such a disappointment. When I saw the lobby - my jaw dropped. I feel they removed the grandeur that the older ships had and the timeless details that made the Disney ships not feel like a floating theme park. And the downgraded adult spaces feels like they removed any appeal for the non-family traveler.
More like a floating Holiday Inn that staples Disney characters to everything as an excuse to upcharge. Theme parks tend to be more cohesive and thought-out than this
10:30 the darker is due to the floors being dark. This keeps the light from reflecting, and the materials on the walls could also hurt in this. But I think the biggest is if they just changed out the floor with something brighter, and they will get rid of the dark feeling. It looks like a lot of this was poor planing and a bunch of afterthoughts. I wonder if they will ever use the company they used to design this.
Most people aren’t aware of this, but the Wish is the first Disney Ship to be designed to run on LNG (liquified natural gas). The machinery required to do this directly caused almost all of the design issues on the Wish. It’s why the 1923 has a split design. It’s why there are two smaller theaters. It’s why there was a bump out near the rear funnel (then they added a second to match). It’s why there are weird corridors and dead ends. There were a lot of compromises made. But that doesn’t excuse so many of the other issues. Like not being able to run on the promenade, or Hyperspace Lounge and the shops being located where there would be prime oceanviews. There was a lot I loved about the Wish. I liked the concept of a castle at sea. I liked the concept of a Marvel restaurant. I liked so much about it. But I’m in no way eager to go back (our next cruise in 10 days is on the Fantasy).
@@BrightSunFilms If I remember correctly, the Imagineers discussed it during one of those lengthy interview sessions they did during the grand reveal of the ship. They didn’t phrase it quite like I did, more along the lines of how they had to rethink the layout of some spaces on the ship due to the requirements of the new engines, but once you know that and you are on the ship, you can immediately see where there are cases where you just can’t go from one side of the ship to the other. I don’t know why there seems to be so much that has to go up through the center of the ship, though. they didn’t go into that level of detail.
I was lucky enough to go on the Fantasy when I was 19 and the thing I appreciated the most about that ship was how Disney *knows* that the cruise line would be popular with families, so they made a point to prioritize noise control and making equally detailed and well-thought out areas for all age groups. Heck, it’s the reason I recommend Disney cruise lines to people in the first place, the kids are off in their own areas and the only time you really encounter swaths of screaming children are in the family pool area, where it’s kind of expected. That’s a real shame that the new ship has gone so hard with the luxury staterooms and yet they haven’t actually thought much of the day to day experiences of the adults that are paying for all of it, hahaha
This is exactly how I felt after trying the Celebrity Edge class: in every way I thought it was worse than its predecessors. I appreciate the thorough and honest review. Hiring someone to head a design team who had never been on a cruise ship was a huge tip-off to one major source of the problems you encountered, and is an absolutely astonishing indictment of the management that allowed that to happen. Outsiders can bring in good, fresh ideas, but they need to be learned in the basics of the industry and the product before allowing them to make multimillion dollar decisions that will follow the ship for decades.
I disagree that the problem was a person who'd never been on a cruise. The Disney ships are just as gawdy and tacky as all the other cruise ships out there. She did what they all do to attract the tacky Americans.
I love when you used the word baffle, because it is always on point. it baffles me too that someone designed literal viewing chairs that look directly into an expensive suite. great video, keep it up!
Thank you for this. Confirmed my fears. I’m a platinum DCL cruiser and very passionate about these ships as well. Switching my Wish cruise to the Dream. I just cannot deal with that adult pool area situation.
My wife and I sailed the Wish two months ago and while it was our first Disney Cruise experience and we really enjoyed it, we have to say your critiques are spot on and not over embellished or dramatized. We learned a lot from your video and comparisons with other Disney ships. We were planning a second sailing on the Wish but now are very curious about your other recommendations such as the Fantasy which we'll consider trying next, thanks!
This is a warning sign for the Disney Company overall. They are losing their magic. They are choosing the bottom line over the guest experience and that is just disgusting. I loved the Dream when I went on it but now seeing what they have become I will take my buisness elsewhere. Hey Universal I think you can beat Disney
Have been for the last 2 years. The pandemic, seems to have effected all their brain cells and now it's money first. Star Wars and Marvel franchises are their major go to because they are the ones that the rich Disney Adults are into. It show in the parks, the de-Disneying of their hotels and the resetting of their parks.
@@kenirainseeker539 While I'd agree, I'm also averse to loud noise and crowds. This ship in particular seems to have a lot of unnecessary problems, especially problems that ruin any respite from the noise and crowds.
I just got back yesterday from a trip on the Wish and this video is DEAD ON on ALL POINTS. We are long time Disney Cruisers, and are so disappointed and confused with this ship. The crew was the best as usual, but they were also disoriented most of the time. At least Disney got the name right, I WISHed I was on the DREAM or the FANTASY! I won’t be back on this ship.
My family and I were onboard at the end of July and we agree with you 100%. We were shocked by the mistakes made in the design of this ship, and felt they were also cutting corners to cut costs, like much fewer food options in the buffet and with the one hot tub on the pool deck in order to convince you to pay more for the hot tubs in the spa. We too found this ship’s layout very confusing and never really got it, something that’s never happened to us on any other cruise before. The lounges for the activities aren’t big enough to host the events they host. The animation classes are just a cast member hitting play on a RUclips video. You also rarely get to see the sea, but that makes sense given Disney thought it made sense give this project to someone who’d never been on a cruise ship in her life 🤦♀️ and you can tell. We really disliked this ship and we’ll never go again. (For reference, we’ve been on all of the other DCL ships except for the Fantasy).
First world problems, expressed by a bunch of spoiled-brat whiners. Be thankful you can go on a cruise. So you can't get 18 varieties of omelets at your deluxe breakfast buffet - deal with it. Sounds like people have lost all perspective, and to complain about such ridiculous, insignificant things is frankly offensive. "We've been on all the other ships" - then get the stick out of your behind and give your tickets to someone who will appreciate it.
@@Mr21scott people can still have opinions and still be grateful. We love Disney Cruiseline and have been on all the ships but Magic. We're very thankful that we have jobs that can affforf this for us when we save and plan... and we travel as inexpensively as possible. We didn't care for the design and overall experience either and prefer the other ships.. which is slightly disappointing... but we are grateful for the opportunity to cruise. Their thoughts were very similar to ours. I appreciate reviews. I don't always agree with everyone's opinion but it is nice to read them.
As somebody with mobility issues, and a huge behind, those elevators look like a nightmare. I would set off every button accidentally. 😄 I’m not a cruiser, or Disney person, but I can definitely see why you prefer the older ships. They seem to have a personality that the Wish lacks.
I just booked a May, 2024 sailing on the Wish. I appreciate all of your insights. Well before you said it, I recognized the "new design philosophy" from recently-built Disney World properties (Riviera), and the re-furbishing of other resorts. There seems to be a homogenization going on, a push to make Disney less special and more like any other place one might visit!
This is literally the cruise ship review I’ve always been looking for. I obviously appreciated the criticality, but I really valued how you situated the review within the design of the ship, the history of the cruise line, as well as the brand. More of these, please! Love your work.
I just got home today from the Disney Wonder Alaska cruise. One of the best experiences of my life. The ship's nautical, yet intuitive design inspires you and makes you feel like you're on an voyage of adventure. It was my first time to any Disney vacation. Never been to a park, just seen the movies so I was skeptical, but I'm not now. It's sad that Disney lost some of that magic with the Wish, but hopefully they'll find their feet again. Fantastic video my friend! Your content is always top caliber.
I have cruised on all the Disney ships, including this one. Your analysis is perfect. The Wish pales in comparison to the Fantasy. I have a feeling things will be altered. Excellent job.
I’ve sailed on the Dream twice now and both times were fantastic, at the time cruise lines with private islands weren’t heard of so the fact that Disney had a private island only accessible by cruise was amazing
Harsh? At that price? No, absolutely not. I enjoyed the review. A great insight into your experience. Honestly I'd probably opt for one of the sub $1000 options for a 4 day cruise on another line. Everything Disney is super expensive now which I think prohibits a lot of people from visiting. More videos like this one wouldn't be a bad thing. It's helpful information!
I’ve been on over 30 Disney cruises spread across their first four ships in the fleet. I agree with everything you have said about the Disney wish. It’s not a ship that I have any desire to cruise on. It seems to have abandones everything that made Disney Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line.
My husband and I went on our first ever Disney Cruise on the Wish, and almost every couple we spoke to told us their favorite ship was the Fantasy. So we didn’t have a horrible time, but we will definitely be trying the Fantasy next. The elevator buttons honestly almost made the whole trip unbearable
My man that was the BEST cruise ship review I've ever seen across the board. You should really consider getting into more ship reviews across other lines! You did a fantastic job, don't really care if it was biased or harsh because that's what I want to see in a review.
I see a massive and potentially life threatening situation from the layout the ship. Because of the deck doors that look like storage room doors or Crew areas, confusing hallways and rooms, and especially signs that lead to things that don’t exist, I could see Disney getting into a lot of trouble if an incident were to happen aboard the ship and people needs to get out.
I just sailed the Magic. Cabanas, at least on the Magic, is also only open for breakfast and lunch. Options for dinner are the three main dining rooms, room service, or quick service. That said, the main dining rooms on the Magic aren't as seizure-inducing as the Marvel one seems.
Great video! The key thing IMO is that the woman in charge of this thing was literally *bragging* that she'd never been on a cruise ship. You could tell from how she said it that the furthest thing from her mind was that this just might be a problem!
this video was a ton of fun, I can't lie I would love to see what you think of the OTHER cruises now after you mentioned them. time for another cruise?? 😁
I was on the same sailing as you. There are a lot of positives about the wish, but the biggest negatives are the numerous poor design decisions (that looked good in concept I’m sure) you pointed out and the general unreadiness of the ship. Very sloppy/embarrassing of Disney. Pandemic didn’t help i know getting this ship done in time. I would like to come back on the Wish once everything is the way they want it and Aladdin show is running. This past couple years of Disney both at sea and at the parks has changed my mindset. I’m now just expecting them to cheap out and make bad decisions. I am done with the hype. The glory days are gone.
Agreed. Disney just seems to be slipping so much now, that I've lowered my expectations now when it comes to anything new that they announce. It's really a shame, since they used to be a respectable company in a lot of ways, and while I still love Disney, I can't get over the amount of bad decisions they've been making recently!
I was on this ship on a similar early sailing date. after being on the Wonder barely 2 weeks before (thanks to the very same 50% you got for your cancelled sailing) I was very disappointed to say the least. I thought this ship would be amazing, all of the marketing made it look like it would be a one-up above the Dream and Fantasy, but it simply wasn't. The layout was EXTREMELY confusing with numerous deadends and a lot of unmarked rooms or signs pointing to nothing. Both The Worlds of Marvel and Arendalle had mediocre food at best, especially when compared to the other ships, and both dining experiences were much less fun than something like Animators Pallette on any of the four other ships. Many of the crew members I talked to didn't eve know their way around the ship yet, most of them being on for more than 2 months by the time of my boarding. To think that the lead designer had never even been on a cruise before, let alone a disney cruise is astonishing, While the first impressions of the ship, both inside and out were amazing, by the end of the three night cruise I was still struggling to find my way around to many of the common areas onboard. Overall, I'm with you, I don't think the wish will ever be seeing me as a passenger again.
Yeah, I am amazed they had a designer who had NEVER been on a Disney cruise before. That is awful. Even animators do actual research on what they’re drawing on.
Great video, definitely the best, most detailed review on a cruise experience I've ever seen. Plus I trust the authors opinion as to me this is a highly trusted RUclips. One thing I've learned in my hospitality career is that 99.9 percent of people will never be able to afford that 4 million dollar necklace, but the magic of Disney is letting the average person experience trying on something they would have never otherwise had the opportunity to do. Which is kinda amazing.
I'm a die-hard Royal Caribbean fan myself so I'm no stranger to how expensive cruises are. But I couldn't imagine shelling out the price of both a Disney attraction AND a cruise! I'm glad my gut was right and it is as (or more) ludicrously expensive than I thought.
Yeah this is the thing. I know kids would love it but when we could go on 2-3 cruises on Royal Caribbean or Norwegian or MSC there is no way I would go for this.
Spot on Sam. I live an hour from Orlando so my family are always at the Disney parks a lot. The price difference between Universal and Disney isn’t far from one another so you can take your pick and enjoy both if you want. But when it comes to cruising? The price difference between Royal and Disney is so high that I cannot justify the price even though I know it would be a fun time but I can go to two or three royal Caribbean cruises on their newer ships which I have which my kids absolutely love it. To Each their own. I wouldn’t mind trying one of the older Disney ships because this one just isn’t it for my family. I appreciate Jake’s review of this.
We cruised on the Wish a few weeks ago. We had a wonderful time, but your video brought out some of the problems that we experienced; getting around the ship, some of the club areas, and the closely packed dinning areas. We were lucky to have a table for 4 and sat furthest from the next table so we didn't feel as crunched as we could have. We didn't get a chance to dine in the specialty dining areas, but we did walk through them and they are beautiful. I don't think people who have not been on the Dream or Fantasy would find what frequent Disney cruisers find annoying. Once they have experienced the other ships, they may have the same feelings about the strange decisions that were made on the Wish.
Dude goes from abandoned buildings and bankrupt business to a Luxury cruise ship! That was probably the best cruise ship review i have ever watched on RUclips. Thank You.

What’s crazy is this ship seems to be a microcosm for Disney as a whole over the past decade: bigger and better on paper, but more commercialized and missing the care and vision that made them so successful before.
Perfect analyzation.
Exactly how I was feeling! Shame really . . . could be so much more!
Exactly.

Exactly!

Why are the windows not one way windows?
Right now, I feel way less ripped off on a Disney ship than I do at Disneyland Paris or Walt Disney World
This is a recent trend for Disney. They are more and more an experience for the wealthy. A 5k drink is insane!
@@jayward8237 5k drinks used to be limited to places like Dubai and Vegas whose very gimmicks are irresponsible spending. Odd they’ve now made it into Disney. Says a lot about what Disney is more and more becoming
When the lead designer says "I've never been on a cruise ship but I'm gonna design this one" ITS A CLUE!
Actually it can be a huge advantage when designers are not familiar with the subject... It opens up for new an innovative ideas. Virgin Cruises is demonstrating that very well. The mistake made here is simply the profit driven decisions 🤷🏼♂️
@@TheMickeynukki yeah it could've been a huge advantage but it looks like the really missed the boat here.

I'm guessing it's not actually valued at that price point but they say it is so you feel special when they let guests try it on

I'm glad you noticed and reported on the noise pollution. I find that kind of thing super annoying but every time I'm in a situation like that I see plenty of people who don't even seem to notice.
Think you just found Disney’s target demo! People that don’t seem to notice issues.
i waited the entire length of mulan on the ship deck screen to ride twice. not worth it.
I went on the ship and although the show for worlds or marvel admittedly sucked I think he was way to harsh on the food.
Seems like part of an overall broader trend where Disney, which used to have meticulous attention-to-detail and top-notch quality, is letting things slide. All for more money.
Funny enough, it actually reminds me of the "Rainforest Cafe" restaurants. Just Noise and thunderstorms while trying to eat.
Honestly, this whole ship just feels like a lawsuit waiting to happen. With the stairways that aren’t fully accessible to all decks, elevators that cannot be filled with folks in case of evacuation, and the ship being overall inaccessible and difficult for folks with disabilities screams mass casualties in the case of an accident.
as someone with cerebral palsy I completely agree
I hope it catches fire
And the seizure-inducing Marvel restaurant

That’s awful! Someone will sue them one day.

😢
So true 👌
I believe that this ship was designed for First time Disney cruisers to pair with a Walt Disney World Vacation. For us Castaway Members, it's not really worth it.
quick buck = dying company
Wow my family is considering going on another cruise soon. I, like you, was fortunate enough to spend the 2000s and early 2010s going on the first four ships and this video may have saved us a mediocre family trip. I'm thinking we have to book the older ships.
Hi Mogswamp
Man’s got saved
This! We were booked on the Wish out of Port Canaveral for May 2024 and just moved to the Dream two days later out of Port Everglades!
If I’m recommending any Disney ship to you I recommend the Disney wonder I’ve been on the ship 12 times, and each time is so great. All the staff are so nice and everything is like brand new, even though it’s a super old ship.
Royal caribbean is Great ive been on four and theyre amazing for kids and adults im going on wonder of the seas next year maybe try those?
This. 100%
‘You’re dead if you aim solely at kids. Adults are just kids grown up."
"You have to appeal to the adult. The adults have the money, children don't have any money."

As an introvert with sensory overload issues, those restaurants all look like nightmares, and especially when it's that or go hungry.
I can’t imagine how bad it’d be for me as an autistic adult like how unaccomadating is it to not have alternative options
Misplaced modifier.
the marvel one especially looks horrible
Your research, preparation, and information are second to none. You did an amazing job with this video.
Thank you! That means a lot it’s being appreciated

Thank you.
I’ve been on the Dream, Fantasy, and Magic (Wonder in Dec), and the Dream is my absolute favorite ship.

I LOVE your friend's reaction @ 38:34 when she got to try on the necklace! ☺❤
As far as the ship, it sounds like more of what I've come to expect from modern Disney: Overpriced but underwhelming.
Probably the most thorough review of a cruise ship I’ve ever seen in RUclips. Nicely done!
Yes I hard to search hard for an honest video of a Disney cruise.
Just watching the flashing lights at 13:26 even without the original audio...I know I would lose my appetite and just want to go back to my room. That literally looks exhausting. More like a dance floor than a restaurant.
"No cruise ship in history will ever get a teen space right" finally someone gets it.
Shame to see the _wish_ doesn't live up as strongly to their legacy
so a crappy disney land that floats?
550$ for 3 nights including meals? Thats a bargain!
savantics, a channel I was recommended did a long video on Disney's prices, and holy hell it's actually shocking how expensive some of the stuff is, and the trip as a whole

One of my favorite aspects. Trying to imagine what they were thinking. And the results lol.
What happens when you don't get a qualified and experienced Ship Designers, a disaster in the making...

Thank you.
Definitely made the right decision! The Wish was unfortunately not made with mobility issues in mind.
your comments about everyone being able to see in on the tower suite reminded me of something.
at the globe theatre replica in london, the tour guides will point out the royal/vip seats. these were placed *behind* the stage, where the back wall/set would be today. which is ludicrous to pay for if you're going to see the play, but they weren't. they went there because that way everyone could see them, they were paying to be important and be seen and almost be part of the entertainment.
perhaps the people who the tower suite is aimed at have the same philosophy. they want to be seen, they want everyone to know theyre there and have the money. its a "look at me, peasants" room.
Floating theme park. That’s so funny u said that because that’s exactly what I was thinking the whole time watching this review
That’s interesting insight, and it’s something I’ve never heard before. Is there any source on how you know that?
"You know life boats take too much space and weight for the next attraction...."

Good points! They clearly aren't choosing "bottom line" pricing that's for sure!
Let’s see if Universal ever goes into cruise lines.
It's not just disney. Cruises in general are very bad experiences.
Being stuck on a boat out in the ocean with a bunch of Disney adults & their kids sounds like a real life nightmare lol.

I’m not a cruiser, or Disney person, but I can definitely see why you prefer the older ships.
I love how you're talking about the noise issues with the one hot tub at 31:00 and you got the sign next to it saying "Quiet Cove" in the shot
I’ve been on over 30 Disney cruises spread across their first four ships in the fleet. I agree with everything you have said about the Disney wish. It’s not a ship that I have any desire to cruise on. It seems to have abandones everything that made Disney Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line.
“It’s the Disney Wish because they wish it were better” -my friend’s reaction to the ship.
Even the name is traded market trash
Because of the deck doors that look like storage room doors or Crew areas, confusing hallways and rooms, and especially signs that lead to things that don’t exist, I could see Disney getting into a lot of trouble if an incident were to happen aboard the ship and people needs to get out.
when he sayed there is no way down from deck 13 except the elevator that whas a direct osha violation and lawsuit to happen no joke

YES! what do you think of other cruise lines?
Hey Jacob, I love all your reviews. I’ve watched many of them multiple times. Thank you for everything you do.
Looks like typical modern Disney attractions: cheap, shallow, and overpriced.
Nah it's worth you're there for fun
Pretty much
@@mitsuri3096 you can have as much, if not more fun on other cruise lines for waaay less than half the price of a disney cruise though
@@jcspotter7322 what's the average to spend on a cruise ship
Just like Chapek…
Disney has mass market appeal but luxury pricing.
What’s your RC favorite ship ?
@@sarahbizzz my favorite freedom class ship is the independence. my favorite oasis class ship is the harmony.
Thank You.
