Solar Powered E-Bike (Trike) Designed to Reduce City Traffic

- Опубликовано: 8 июл 2017
- The Veemo is an incredible fully enclosed electric assist bicycle with an 80 Watt solar panel on the roof to trickle charge the battery. It was designed by VeloMetro to be a shareable vehicle in Vancouver and eventually in cities around the world.
The idea is that people can rent these e-bikes and use them as an extension of the public transportation system in a given city. The electric assist makes it possible for people with different fitness levels to use the bike, and to get around the city without breaking a sweat or getting wet if it's raining.
This ebike can go up to 30 km/hour and the battery gives it a range of 100km. To operate these electric bikes as a fleet, but without having expensive infrastructure, VeloMetro plans to have a battery swap system with a truck packed with charged batteries who will go around and swap out batteries that are low on power.
Kody Baker from VeloMetro thinks these bikes (Velomobiles) will help cities make a modal shift towards getting people out of single occupant cars and into active transportation.
The positive impacts of a modal shift would mean fewer cars on the road, less noise and air pollution, more space for bike lanes, and a healthier population.
Veemo even has shocks, power windows and locks, and space behind the seat for groceries or luggage.

What an awesome project! I bought an ebike a few months ago but I'm scared to use it in busier areas where motorists can be unpleasantly aggressive towards cyclists (or just not that aware of them). I'm also not that stable (due to some health issues) so a tricycle structure is a bonus. This vehicle is more visible and seems more assertive on the road than a regular bike. I like it a lot and hope the concept is a success so that it can spread to more cities around the world.
The entire idea behind this is fantastic. I'm looking forward to a future where more of these are running around. I live an hour from where the ELF is manufactured and yet I've not seen one on the road anywhere.
@ReforgedCriterion do you own an ELF or anything similar??
I love these cycle mini cars! I like the idea of protection from the weather. It would be awesome to build something to handle those super cold and snowy days.
My thoughts exactly! everyone cant afford a drivers license or cant do the theory for medical reasons thus we're stuck to a bike in the snow, rain and cold, struggling to get our bags home. This would solve all of that. But is the price right, I ask..?
@@Velometro price pls
Simple Full don’t know how good it would ride in the snow???
@@brianmck7363 $24600.00 It's a great deal. With 3 years of the same level of inflation everyone will be able to buy one.
I really hope these type of vehicles start becoming more ubiquitous so that the prices will come down significantly. Also hopeful that some will be designed that can handle winter conditions well
Wow I finally found one of these that is actually good. I'm working on building a similar vehicle and the other ELF styled ones are built so terribly. No suspension, no comfort, terrible road noise. Thank you for showing them how it's done.
Would love to know how you built yours im looking into having someone build something like this and could take any tips you might have 🤗🤗
I showed your video just now in my alternatives fuel class in rock springs wyoming in the United states, great video
This is perfect for the places that have no cycling infrastructure, but some roads to use.
Super awesome. Best one I've seen. I would be less apt to share. I don't want to sit in someone's sweat if they decided to "go for a workout" lol. Easily swappable battery and a docking station for the apartment would be clutch. Park it downstairs, carry the battery up.
But not the best one you will drive because it weighs 100 pounds more than the practical limit for useful pedaling. This is overbuilt and might be OK as a rental but not the best to own.
I'm from windsor ontario and there is a huge stereotype behind ebikes. living in the Motor City if you buy a solar powered / electric vehicle you're telling your friends, family, ect. you don't care about their jobs. but we need to find a compromise, we need to have reliable level entry vehicles, vehicles that are designed for your shorter commutes to work, school the store ect. I can't wait for this to be available, and more business like this one to be accessible. To force larger car companies to rethink how they market and sell to cities. love this idea.
I live in Chatham-Kent and there's a similar mindset here. Fortunately I live in the country and my travelling is on long country roads with occasional city visits.
I've often biked Windsor and London and find it enjoyable for the most part with a few difficult areas. City infrastructures need to be a little more accommodating for cyclists in general.
London has progressed a little further than Windsor.
Chatham is dismal. People ride on the sidewalks because there is no safe alternative.
@@kokopelli314 Hi! I'm in the north of England. I can only afford to ride a bike these days, but I don't ride on pavements. Not ever. My late mum was knocked down by a lycra-clad cretin riding on the pavement. He very bravely ran away, leaving her in a heap. She was 74 and very frail. Her wrist was badly broken when she hit the ground. She never quite recovered from it.
When I'm a pedestrian I make myself as wide as possible when I see a cyclist riding towards me. I respond to pavement cyclists with EXTREME prejudice. I trained in jiu-jitsu for 26 years, so Johnny-f*ckwit courier will find out that I'm not the pushover my mum was.
If riding on the roads isn't safe, bikers should get off the road and bloody-well walk. Driving on the roads isn't safe, either, but people would soon complain if nervous motorists and motorbike riders took to using the pavements.
@@EleanorPeterson I understand completely. An elderly friend was hit by a cyclist on a Toronto sidewalk, while Campaigning for the Green Party! A Brutal irony.
@@kokopelli314 i too use sidewalks in winnipeg when no eperate bike lanes are present on main thoroughfares. a side street ill use the street no problem but im not getting on the street with a 1000 lb car to share a lane. no way not safe. theres rules of man, and rules of physics, and the laws of nature care not for the laws of man. ill tell that to any cop that tickets me for using a sidewalk if need be, but ove here theres almost ero pedestrian trafic save inside downtown (which has tons of segregated bike lanes anyways)
It seems to me y'all got the best design of all the E-bikes out there, ever !!!
Y'all ROCK 💪💪!!!!
Damn I just had this idea 💡
You guys are geniuses, 6 years ahead
Wow, I really like it. I love that people are being so innovative about this sort of thing. I do wonder about it being on a bike path. It looks so wide that it might block the whole path. Making it hard to pass it. It's still pretty cool though, and nothing starts out perfect.
Great video! Thanks for the insight
Abosolutely FANTASTIC! I want one
This is much better than my current ebike. I want to buy one!
You guys have the best job!!! We stopped using our car and this looks so cool!
I would do the same but my only option in CA is a velomobile. I am saving up for my velomobile for when I get into high school. 6k for the one I found but I really want to bargain for 5k!!!! Do you know if we can buy these rather than renting?
RIPPOFF it justa recumbant bycycle with a plastic body over it an a motor an they cost 5 grand they just robbin people an your muggs who buy them hahaha.
Alright smart guy. Think before you speak and do your research on frikin velomobiles. First of all, velomobiles are made of fibre glass or carbon fibre, which is light, strong, and yet expensive. These allow for a farther extend of molding into an aerodynamic which covers the FULL trike. This allows you to pedal faster than this even without a motor. Ayyyy, looks like you didn't do your research. Yikes. And let me tell you something: if you have a car, I can guarantee you spent at least $1000 if you have had it for a good amount of time. Now let's bring reality in. You have to pay for gas, insurance, registration, and maintanence. And if you bought cheap, your maintanence will be high. Within a year, your yearly cost will jump from $1000 to at the very least, $3000. Now, $2000 a year atleast for all that bs on cars, you'd be past $11,000 spent on a cheap car in just five years. Look at that!!! In five years, the velomobile only needs the basic velomobile maintanence. So let's say the velomobile was $6000 and you kept it well, you'd spend about $100-$200 in a year. Five years= $500-$1000. So that brings you in at about under $7000. And that was a $1000 cheap shatter box car. Most people get $10,000 or more today. That makes it more expensive! Cmon bro, think about it.
miao mei good luck with that..
VVVEEEMMMOOO
They already have things like this where I live and they are kind of sad looking on the roads around the larger vehicles, I think if more people were doing it, it would catch on
I love the idea of you branching out to exploring other types of alternatives, not just living spaces.
Thanks for the feedback David! We weren't sure if maybe it was too off topic but thought we should give it a try. Happy you enjoyed it :) :)
It isn't off topic. It's broadening the scope of the topic. There are a ton of excellent alternatives of every variety. I also thought you guys might enjoy covering different things. Broadening the scope might help grow the channel too.
Oh wow, I LOVE this!! when I lived in Boston, I had an electric bike and yes, riding a bike in torrential rain isn't fun! So this is amazing!!! to be covered in bad weather, have storage room.....:-)
Yeah, getting caught in the rain on a bicycle is pretty terrible, specially if you're just heading to work or something! It would be great if something like this was available in more major cities. Thanks for checking out the video :)
That would do well in a city like Boston and Cambridge - so many students, the streets are already overcrowded, and you already have the bike lanes. The only time that might be difficult for something like this would be in the winter when they get smacked with all of the snow.

@@Velometro Would you kindly advise how many Amp Hours(AH) and or Watt Hours( WH) your standard rechargeable battery pack is?
Is the Gates Carbon Belt Drive actuated by a direct drive motor attached to the pedals or a Hub motor attached to the single rear wheel? Thank you. How exciting! Much success to your company. phil
Wow, this is one super cool hybrid bike. I would definitely buy one of these if they were for sale in England x
It would be a great addition to take with my RV traveling around the country. It is definitely the future.
This is a great idea and product. I'm sure as we move into a more electric world and particularly for retirees this would beca fantastic vehicle. Well done guys.
Would love to see these hit the market!!!!!
wow love ds! u can easily go through when there's traffic, good for the environment. I think ds is good on our place since we often have sunny days to charge the solar power.
This is a good idea and they look like fun to drive. :)
VeloMetro Mobility Inc Can we get them in the uk
I'm all for this man ! This is awesome man.
I love the idea, wish this was in Seattle!
Love the enclosed footwell very very much
Love this! Im working on designing my own brand of velomobile the "Solar Roller".
I think these are going to be very popular , especially in places with Sunshine and Towns that are just 5-10 km in diameter where cycling is doable, viable and when it is raining and these protect from getting wet …….so much cheaper than a Car for short trips .
I read on the net that in the UK 2/3 of car trips are those where the driver is the only occupant and over 1/2 of our trips are less than 5 km !
This makes these little modes of transport attractive .
Super Superb!! Super Superb!! Super Superb!!
Super Thanks for Sharing!!
We have a woomy on a vroomy and now a Veemo on a veemo!
I was really looking for somebody notice that
:D
Cool ! Would love that here in Florida ! Thumbs up. ENJOY... THE SIMPLE LIFE
I honestly hope that this version comes to consumer hands very soon because the only one that is available now is the semi enclosed version sadly.
Thank you
I NEED This!
Better looking than the ELF and completely enclosed -- lots of good thinking went into this. Love to see how one holds up to a salty Canadian winter?
Cheers
Snow testing is good but a long winter pounding will really show its true strengths... or bring to light its weaknesses.
Cheers
This guy loves the word 'Bicycle'. Its not a bicycle! Its a super-trike!
awesome concept
Good creative. I love new idea.
Covered e bikes are an untapped market. Theres the ELF, the PEBL and the Germans have a 4 wheeler called the "Bio hybrid." They are like velomobiles but they have e motors and are taller for visibility in traffic. They just need to keep slim so they don't hog bike lanes. Well done guys. Love to see one in New Zealand.
I hope they include Woomy DLC
you probably dont care but if you're stoned like me during the covid times then you can watch all the new movies on InstaFlixxer. Have been watching with my brother for the last few months :)
@Cairo Marcellus Yup, have been watching on instaflixxer for months myself =)
this is so cool i would love one of these to tow a small home or something
Beautiful
I would love one
We need something like this here in Muscatine Iowa
I like that . thanks for sharing this
You're very welcome, thanks for watching :)
I love this idea but may I asked for a few adds to the bike. First off and most important is a battery core you can take out and plug into your house or a friends house. You could also make a bike that is just for the house to charge the battery for exorcizing
at home. That would go pretty for far you as well. Let me know what you think.
Sales person people need it ...it's good for winter days...love it from. India ...when it came in india
I own many bikes, downside of owning is maintaining, prepping before a ride and theft prevention at the destination ...... E bikes and scooters are most likely the future ..... hope to see them in smaller cities .....
So cool enjoy one myself thank you for sharing
Very lovely
I like this, I would drive a Veemo.
Yes because why not?
lol
Very good idea
I'd like one of these with room for my dog or a second person.
My city is against anything motorized on bike trails unfortunately.
Consider me subscribed. If this works out and my city changes a little I'm in.
That will be nice to be able to have 2 sits or even 4 so a family can take a ride with it
Maşallah öndeki incileriniz göz kamaştırmış.
Good job
Really nice.
Thanks for watching!
Imagining a realllly long tandem version for families. Everyone pedals.
That would be very cool =)
since bikes are not permitted to ride two abreast, this means a very long bike indeed. might be difficult to turn corners and maneuver safely.
This is a cool idea!
But it looks like the rider sits too far back so the center of gravity is too close to the rear wheel and the axis of tilt. For recumbents you have different seating closer to the front wheels. Ideally it should be a quadricycle though.
laws want to keep these off the roads at all costs, so theve drafted rules to prevent anything 4 wheels and stable form being allowed without a license. common sense and politicians are mutually exclusive.
@@Spoutinwyze Yeah I suspect the same. In the EU they have been hamstrung with 25km/h motor assist without license and registration. And the faster class is hamstrung with 45km instead of city speed limit of 50kmh.
Fantastica, dovrebbero svilupparla in Italia, così addio petrolieri
that's so cool
8 years ago this idea came to my head I think it was weird but looking at today it's great idea now
Dov'è il tergicristallo?
Se piove si rischia di non vedere dove si va a schiantare!
Qual'è la potenza in wat?
Può trainare un carrello?
Qual'è l'autonomia in km?
Quanto ore ci vogliono per caricare la batteria?
Grazie mille per la disponibilità! ❤
That so cool.
I want one of these. I like that it's fully enclosed. This can get me through the winter days. Are they beta testing these yet?
I like it ! ! Very similar to the one made by Organic Transit. That one sells for $6k.
The ELF is $8,950 base price and is still consistently back ordered 3 to 5 months due to demand. ELF weighs 160 pounds so it can really be pedaled but this Veemo design is so heavy and expensive it is not practical and will not succeed.
Veemo I wish you success but you have to admit that your gorgeous but somewhat over engineered vehicle weighs 100 pounds more than the ELF. I really don't want to be seen as a shill troll for them but it's like this, OT has sold 1000 units and they are years ahead in miles logged and rider feedback compared to competitors. 5 million road miles, three 4000 mile cross continental trips covered in books, blogs and feature length movies. It remains to be seen if your targeted market will be happy with the cargo capacity and pedaling performance. This industry is wide open, I would be foolish to not admit that 10 years from now Veemo could be the global leader in this new industry. Or you can be a minor footnote. The design is so critical.
your targeted market reeks of agenda 21 and agenda 30...you wish to entrap the population into rental..and rentals that would not allow said population to leave the city.
trump and the USA has wrecked your targeted market so perhaps you should shift gears and markets and look at developing a product that is focused on individual ownership.
@@bobamericana3099 - Sigh, you conspiracy nuts are all over the place. Nobody is getting trapped, you think these ebikes and ecars are even hurting the gas-powered vehicle industry? They're barely profiting! Name one scooter, one golf cart, or electric car that is able to travel outside 100 miles. This issue isn't exclusive to this one company. That's just the nature of solar and electric design. Those have always been their limitations, but they're slowly improving as technology continues to advance. If these manufacturers could extend the distance of these vehicles and have enough consumer demand to sell them (rather than rent), trust me they'd do it. They'd be way more profitable. Stop watching news propaganda and go read a book or your brain will continue to rot.
@@popeyegordon it's not for individual sales anyway. It's a fleet for a ride sharing service. Think bicycle meets Uber.
NICE
Needs a center brake light, so I can draft behind them on the bike lane.
With the battery up-front, I would think it’s tippy when your really heavy on the front brake.
twheels on fornt base, 1 in back, more stability shifting center of gravity towards the two wheels. common sense says 4 wheels but laws wontallow that, laws are built to protect ICe vehicles, write your politicians to complain and change laws.
Is there a family model in the works? Like a Flinstones' car?
The Not Busy Life Kids: Tomorrow's Engines
Seriously. We just upgraded from a kid trailer to a trail a bike where her pedals actually help out. She's now a little hill booster.
How did I know what you've written before I read it ??? " LOL ' yep
isn't that the truth ! let's make all these fantastic inventions a million dollars so they'll be out of reach.
I'll check it out. We're actually planning to get rid of our family's only car, so it might be worth it. (we haven't driven since December, but we haven't yet sold the car...)
In the Netherlands we have fully enclosed recumbent bikes where you can drive in (when a bit used to driving it) up to 60 kilometers per hour without any assistance.
There are also a wide variety of enclosed and not enclosed bikes available here. Not new at all, others are doing it already on larger scale (like 1500 bikes+ a month scale). You might get a better picture about it at en.ligfiets.net/ although most of it is in dutch.
I like it. You need to sell these in Ireland
Wow fantastic I like it
SO COOL!!!!😀
Thanks Kelli :) :)
Still waiting for them to come to Toronto.
i want this!!
I want one now !!!!
Me too
i want one 3 years ago, when they said it would be available "soon"! lol
Hi there, I have owned the Quest and Rotovello semi closed trikes. They were great but E - motors and permanent roofs are a big step ahead. Also the Quest and Rotovello are quite low so their visibility profile is inferior to your higher covered bike. You are easily up with the ELF in terms of all round practicality. Factors to bear in mind are side winds and bike width for cycle lane safety. I note, ELF have open sides for wind mitigation so something to think about. ( I think ELF should have suspension so an opportunity for you to improve there). You have really ticked a lot of boxes with this clever trike. See my old Web site "Planet Pride in the South Pacific" for more on my background. Cheers.
I want one so bad!!!!!!
Me too!!!!!
Fingers Crossed LLC me four
I want to ride this to school lol
me encantaria tener una asi en la Argentina. Soy una fanatica de conservar la ciudad del consumo de combustibles que dañan el medio ambiente.
This type of vehicals really needed for my country.. easy to operate, nice design .love from INDIA.. why don't you start to sales in my country?
Excellent product is this going to be available in th UK? there are many of this type of vehicle trying to get onto the market does this have a reverse gear for parking? Kind regards Mick how abou indicators on the front how effective bare the head lights?
Ahh you make the future bright!
I like it
Intelligent👏👏
They need to do some redesign there were so many blind spots from the the thick bars in the from. But it's still a good idea, I would love to get one if someone could get it perfected.
Perhaps sit in it before rejecting it for blind spots that may not actually restrict your vision from a seated position. Perspective changes everything. There are plenty of other manufacturers making similar products. The bicycle cars in this video are part of a fleet. A ride sharing service. They are not planning on selling to individuals. You'd have to find an independent salesman of a different make.
i like it iwant that transportation.
I really really want to buy one of these.
so want one!
Maybe one day they'll be affordable enough to replace the second car. I can see these working in major cities like NYC, Chicago, Boston. I could even see cities in other countries reducing the number of car lanes and forcing people to look for something like this as a greener option.
But electric cars are only becoming more popular and within a few decades solar/wind plus electric cars will keep these sidelines as expensive toys or novelties.
Is this available yet for purchase anywhere?
Wow Great
Please Veemo start selling these world wide
It's just what I'm looking for, let me know when it's for sale
doesnt seem like ever. theres a handful of "makers" that have promised to provide, and some you can pre-order, but really it lacks investment and PR coverage. once more people know of these, more investors ca be found and more can be built, then laws can change to catch up to the new tech. i suspect this wont happen for about 100 years or o. by then we will all be dead, and perhaps even humanity will too.
Super
skeptical about performance in Canadian winters. Lovely lovely trike though
I like it.
but!
can you ride in the rain?
in bicycle protect rain?
Do y'all make those with two seats and cargo space
ok so where's the windshield-wiper and does it have heat? or does the windshield has a defogger? This seems like a dry weather e-bike
Is it competitive in price with used cars from craigslist?
With cars that cost $1000 - $2000 ?
Shall I buy that thing, or used Geo Metro for $650, and convert it to electric for another $800?
(Or less than $800 if I sell gas motor from it.)
