People don’t realize that a stock Tacoma is plenty capable if they just learn to off road properly. I’m by no means an expert but I see it all the time, big heavy lifted trucks that are just mall cruisers and never really doing any off roading. All show and no go. The only mod my taco has is some good all terrains and that’s all I need to go where I need it to.
hey dude, just bought a 22 tacoma and wondering if I want to upgrade my wheels and tires, would you recommend 285's or 265's? love to know your thoughts about it
I have 285 70R17 on my 2021 Tacoma and did a 55 mph test for a tank of gas and got 403 miles on 18 gals = 22.2 mpg
Nice!! Mud terrains definitely makes the mpgs worse
Dude, gotta have Alexa on more often! She’s gorgeous.... definitely help with the views. Trucks coming along nicely...
Right?!?🤣🤣 shes camera shy though haha. Thanks man!!
Going through the comments to see gas prices from 3 years ago is nuts. Take me back!
Hey Just bought a Tacoma Trd pro, can I fit 33s with stock suspension? Or what tire size can I go without lifting. Thanks in advance!!
Man...as of Mid Feb 2022....Gas in Campbell, CA is over $5 for regular unleaded at Shell....My how gas prices change in a years time. Great vid.
380 miles per tank on my stock Tacoma (highway). Happy with it until I’m next to a lifted one with bigger tires lol
I have a tundra 5.7 on 35"s I get an average of 11 mpg city stock map and computer. I haven't adjusted my computer to compensate for revs per mile so I get about 12.5mpg ? City
That’s not too bad! I’m going to do a city only review and see how my mileage is!
How much lift do you have? Did the 33's rub? Have to trim any plastic or do a body mount chop?
I have a 2.5” lift, yes rubbing with 285 mud terrains, yes on a cab mount chop its a must, and no fender trimming yet. I have a new front bumper so it took away all the rubbing on the front. I just uploaded that video last week if you want to check it out
@@TacoManD4X4 ok thanks
I know this post is from 3 years ago. my question is after the tires and rims did you recalibrate the computer to the up graded tire size? I would think the trip avg would always be wrong still set to oem spec.
No I did not! Where could I get that done at?
Few options. Rough country has a speedometer calibration plug and play for $170.00. Or call the toyota dealer see if they'll recalibrate it. Or try a local off-road shop. I see you're in California you could try 88 rotors off road in Baldwin Park CA if that's close to you.
Also maybe go on tacoma world look up speedometer calibration see what tacoma owners in your area are saying about how they did it or where they went. I hope that helps
I run a 2018 TRD Sport crew cab with a 5'1" bed and a 6s manual. I have a Body Armor front and rear bumper with Cali Raised Dom steel rock sliders, a 3"-2" kit and 285/70 17 in Falken AT3W tire. I average about 17.8 mpg city, that's about 375 miles to a tank. Don't know what you are doing, but it's wrong. I can get close to 400 miles out of a tank on the highway.
Enjoyed the video it was good watching you guys out and about. I have a Toyota Tacoma to and I’m currently trying to turn it into an overland vehicle. In some of the research I’ve done when people do the tires they see the truck losing power a lot of the off-road community recommend you re-gear your truck before upsizing your tires granted it’s not one of the cooler looking mods to get done however it will give your truck the best performance might be something you might wanna look into.
Thank you!! I'll definitely be getting it rear geared to 4.88s sooner than later! Definitely lost a lot of power.
Put a cover on your truck bed, it'll help with the gas mileage.
What are your thoughts of the double cab long bed?
Absolutely love it! Happy I went with the LB
I have a 2017 TRD sport LB, and I love it. it is capable of offroading as long as you don't go hardcore rock crawling.
Texas $1.84 +/- in Central Texas area. This is totally great feedback. Planning to going from 265/70r17 to 285. I'm getting AT tires, so they are not as heavy as MT tires. Maybe that will save me some gas mileage comparing to yours. But this is so helpful! Thank you!
That’s great to hear, thank you!! You’ll love the look of the 285s!!
Bakersfield is about 2+ hours north of LA, up I-5, then after the Grape Vine (Ridge Route). I-5 splits off to the right. Keep going straight and you’ll be on Highway 99 into Bakersfield, which is the armpit of CA.
It gets in the triple digits 3 months out of the year
Nice rig and mtbs. The grip and compound of the mudders will slow you down quite a bit too. I notice it on my Cooper Discoverer S/T Maxx tires and even on my prior Nitto Ridge Grapplers, both of which are hybrids, even though the size difference is not much (or none on the Nittos). Mtb analogy- its like going from a Maxxis Ikon to an Assegai. Did you go up there to mtb?
I have a 2019 tacoma 4x4 sport with 31” tires on KO2’s.
I’ve had my truck with those tires for about a year and half and I recently notice when I fill up, i get 284 miles. I used to get 302 to 307. There is a recall on the fuel pump so i think that’s the reason for the decrease on miles.
And I’m pretty positive I was getting over 300 miles when I drove my truck from Washington back to Ca. Then it went to 285 and now it’s 256. Ill have to see if mine has a recall too!
Not in the states but Im your Northern neighbour . Our gas is sold by the litre and with a much weaker dollar, but we pay approx $8-10 a gallon depending on where one lives in the country.
So you went 243 miles, how many gallons did you use? I must have missed the mpg part.
Gas here in Oregon $2.59 a gallon for regular. I just filled up took a trip to the coast getting 20 miles per gallon ! And yes I am completely stock.
Wow, that’s awesome!!
Gas is $2.19 about 20 miles north of Louisville Kentucky. Awesome channel, enjoying all the things you have done to your truck, and the way you are enjoying them.
Wow! $3.59 in my area right now!🤣 thank you so much! Lots more to come!👍🏼
For me a full tank is about $43.00 gas is around $2.20-$2.40 not too bad!
Wow!! I found it for $3.19 and thought that was good!🤣 I can’t wait to see gas under $3 in California! Lol
Us Californians would say that's almost too cheap to be true!
@@fishtacoma now it is
Yup 5.60$ socal
Now it’s 6.35 in Los Angeles :/
I get 385 on full tank in my 2017 trd off road long bed 4x4. Everything Stock besides my camper shell
Tucson area it ranges from $2.09-2.19 a gallon. When I left California that was the biggest surprise! lol
Holy shit haha that’s insane!!
Loving your channel! I put 33” pizza cutters on my pro and love them
Thanks man!!!🤙🏼
@@TacoManD4X4 You need to bust out a calculator my friend ... your Gauge is off. Based on tire size it is about 3 mph off which would account to a little over 1.3 mpg more give or take so you need to account for that.
2.15 gallon here in Kansas
@@greystone1577 Wow! I just filled up yesterday and it was $3.69 haha $70 for 19 gallons
TacoMan D I know super cheap fuel here how much is diesel out there 2.29 here ?
Is $1.97 in new Orleans at Sams club , just came back from Miami and gasoline average around $2.45 , forgot that's for regular 87 octane .
Sheesh. Even $2.45 is good! Haha
Do the OVTUNE on it, I was going to regear also because of the whole transmission downshifting all the time...did the OVTUNE and it’s like a brand new truck...went from 13.3 MPG to 14.5 ..the best part is the elimination of all the downshifting...some Taco owners say they have seen 17 MPG on average..I’m running 33’s , Rock Sliders and Prinsu rack...not to much added weight
I am under the impression that a re-gear and OV tune combined id the gold standard. Thoughts?
@@reecec8490 yes doing both is ideal, but the quick and most affordable option was the OVTUNE, if I decide to re gear the guy I went to will adjust the OVTUNE for free
you have a 2020 taco right? I saw you were running nav on your home screen. I was told 2019s and up didn't get nav.
Yep! Really?? Maybe because i have the premium package. I never heard about that though
Beautiful Taco! Love the set-up. 2.76 for 87 octane in Pueblo, Colorado
Thank you!!!
Costco 91 in Westminster
Filled up at 2.71 Eastern PA at BJs wholesale.
Wow. Anytime I see below $3 it baffles me haha just filled up yesterday at $3.89 haha
@@TacoManD4X4 it’s only going to go up from here. About the start of last summer Gas was about 2.00 here maybe 2.25. My local supermarket has its own gas station I accumulate some point and used them all at once. Filled up my 4Runner for 1.15.
Daaaang! That’s how much gas is in California!? Wow!!! I’m paying $1.96 for 87 octane. I think 93 octane is @ $2.06
Yep 🤣 wow. Anything under $2 is insane to me haha even $2.06!
It’s 2023 and gas is $3.60 in ohio
Nice vid and channel, subscribed! I’m just about to start a light weight build up on my 2018 to support my fat bike adventures. Current mulling over tire size, staying stock or going up an inch (no lift). I don’t want to re-gear and am in Colorado so already taking the elevation hit. Also thinking about a roof rack just to mount traction boards and eventually a solar panel? Anyways, keep ‘em coming!!
You need to regear to 4.88s or 5.29s
I’m thinking 5.29s is what I’ll go with👍🏼
Did you recalibrate your speedometer???
Yeah, the shop I went to did that for me
first vid and got yourself a SUB😎🤙🏽
Hell yeah!! Thank you!🙏🏼
Thers some great spots near by Bakersfield. Like monache meadows, alabama hills, mammoth lakes, red rock canyon, alta sierra.
You should look into a cold air intake I slapped one on my taco a while ago and it's worth every penny MPG went up and especially HP. I got the S&B they are the best check it out....
Cool I’ll check it out thanks!
How much is your speedo off by now?
About 5mph
Did you regear ?
Yes for about 2 years now. 5.29s
I have a stock tacoma OR and it slows down going down the grapevine too
Nice Truck 👍🏼 long bed looks awesome
Average 17.5 city 19 highway range 340. 265 75 r16. 2 inch lift 2016 access cab trd off rroad. Louisiana. Only hills are overpasses.
Transition bikes! Love my 3rd gen OF and Transition Patrol 🤘
Hell yeah man!! It's a beast!
is this a long bed?
Yep!
Gainesville, FL $2.13-2.23. That’s interesting to see your trip mileage. I’ve got 33” ridge grapplers, 3in lift and a prinsu and I’m still averaging over 300 miles per tank if I’m babying it. It is straight garbage once I hit the highway tho
Damn, low $2’s that’s crazy!! I’m definitely not going to get 300 miles ever again lol
Damn my 17’ taco TRD off road 2wd stock, 415 miles to the tank!! 350 if I’m aggressive on the driving.
That’s crazy haha only time I saw over 350 was the first week of ownership then it randomly dropped to 255.
Nice content! Off-roading and mountain biking.
Thank you!!!
Roof rack takes away 1 or 2 mpg also
Really?? Haha
@@TacoManD4X4 yea ha. It did on my 2020 pro. Of course adding cases and awning to the rack makes you less aero dynamic
will better fuel have better mpg? and mannn long bed looks so much better
Some will say yeah.. some will say no.. I don’t think it really does. I just do it because it’s “Cleaner”... supposedly lol at least I tell myself it’s cleaner and better for my truck haha
I’m having the same problem with my taco, I’m no expert by any means but I think it’s my tires that cause me to decelerate even on declines and constantly have to accelerate even when like you said my foot is in the same spot the whole time
what was the mpg
I’m on a 6 inch lift with 33s and it says I get 378 miles on a full tank. In Miami
What the. How?!?
@@TacoManD4X4 I’m not sure if it right but that’s what it says
That’s awesome if it’s accurate!!
I was watching you doing your little bit of off-roading if you’re going to start doing that my recommendation as you get rock sliders the last thing you want to deal with damage your rocker panel a friend of mine did that and his truck became a right off. I live in the Rocky Mountains in Canada and a gallon of gasoline cost $3.62 that’s Canadian though.
Definitely going to be my next purchase! I’ve heard it’s expensive to replace the rocker panel!
@@TacoManD4X4 yes when my friend had to get his fix he was seriously contemplating buying a new truck
Oh man, that’s crazy. I need to get mine ASAP haha
@@TacoManD4X4 well I'd hate to see it damage that beautiful truck not as beautiful as mine but it's a good looking truck all the same LOL
At the time of your filming I was paying $5.25 a gallon in Chicago Illinois
Texas - if we don’t pump it out of the ground for ourselves, it’s $1.99-$2.20 per gallon.
Wow! As of right now, it’s $3.59 in my area 🤣
I did not see how many gallons you put in your truck on the last stop. The truck has a 21 gallon tank, if you went 248 miles and assuming you put 19 gallons to refill, that's 13.08 MPG, 13.7 if you put in 18. Divide miles driven by gallons to top off the tank. Assuming your speedo is accurate, will give you your actual MPG. I would suggest you regear to get it set back up to better your mileage. To compare i have a Raptor, stock tires, 35 KO2s, no engine mods that consistently gets 16 combined driving, 17 to 18 highway. Good content, beautiful truck, girl, and nice bikes. Lucky man.
Gas in Western Washington State as of yesterday, March 6, 3.30 to 3.50 a gallon depending on what station and county.
I like your TRUCK!!
Thank you!!
Why 89 vs 87?
You got like 3 feet of air that time.......
Very cool video! Got some questions but it’s late, I’m tired. I’ll hit you up.
You need to add about 7.5% to your total tank miles driven and then calculate actual gallons used to get actual mpg. Should be about 1.1.5 mpg better than the computer. mud terrains are heavy so power will def be down without re-gear.
Between 2.28-2.34 a gallon in AL
Sheesh. $3.59 in my area 🤣
Elizabethtown kentucky. Paid 1.94 today.
That’s insane!!! Haha
The gas price here on this beautiful island of Guam for premium unleaded is 4.69.
Wow!!🤯
@@TacoManD4X4 yep...its insane!!🤙
That's so damn cheap!!
engine compression. Put that taco in neutral and see how quick it goes down that hill
Im assuming most people do know that all manufacturers MPG ratings are made with the higher octane on most Commons gas stations which its 91, using any lower octane would throw those ratings off and people be like WTF manufacturers
Yep, very true!
You tacoma its short bed or long
I want to get a 2016 Taco 🌮 TRD Off road 4X4
That answers my question! No 33s for my Taco! 😐
Looks like a fun trip!!
Definitely a great time!! Can’t wait to to back!
R u still rubbing? I just order some matte bronze ray 10 for my taco with some fox 2.0 but I have feeling ima rub
Yep! Rubbing in the front on both sides. No longer rubbing on the cab mount since I got it chopped, but the front fender is getting rubbed. Definitely going to need a front bumper cut sooner than later
Tacoma’s or so sexy, then gas mileage and power come to mind and it makes want a Jeep diesel…
1.99 here in southeast texas
Insane!!
1.97 South MS
Alright you win!! Holy crap that’s crazy haha 2008 was the last year CA had gas under $2 as the state average!
@@TacoManD4X4 yeah it was like 1.70 something back end of last year. Not real good for the oil companies around here though. Anyway, keep up the great vids!
Central Minnesota $2.29
That’s crazy lol one area in Kern was $3.99!
It’s your gearing. Get it geared up
$2.05 regular unleaded Houston, TX
What the. That would fill my truck up for less than $40😩
Lol those gas prices were nice
A tune will get a little better mileage
Yeah I’ve heard that! Any company’s you recommend?
I drove to Bakersfield last week in my 2021 OR. Much prefer the OC area 😂
haha I agree!! Nothing nice about Bakersfield haha
Michigan is $2.13 to up to $2.35
That’s awesome! I saw it at $2.99 in Stockton, Ca! Lowest I’ve seen in a long time haha
I’m guessing you can’t really use 6th gear?
Con llantas 265/50/20 385 20 galones
89 and 87 is the same gas
2.65 a gallon Texas
2.32 sw Washington state
Sheesh. That’s awesome. Idk when we’ll see gas under $3 over here 😩
Just paid $3.17 March 5 in Tacoma Wa area, headed to $4.00.
I want the GF
I’ll put in a good word for you!
@@TacoManD4X4 thank you so much
Tune the truck
you lost mileage for doing that donut lol jk lol
Probably did 🤣🍩

My mt shows way more rpm at 65 than yours. I'd be at least 2300
What size are yours??
@@TacoManD4X4 265 75 16 hercules at2, but they are temporary. 8:25 really......
Uhhh driving around a tree?🧐
Breh just use cruise control
Cruise control sucks on my Tacoma haha mine always stays at like 3,500 rpms and sounds like it’s on the struggle haha it rarely just cruises at low rpms and stays that way
My 2020 cruise runs awesome I use it in town and act like I’m a Tesla.

Hell yeah! Does your Tacoma have the chrome “TACOMA” on both doors?
@@TacoManD4X4 Yeah, it still does. I might want to debadge sooner or later!
Please untuck your ears lol
I wish the gas prices were still of that these days 🥲
