  • The Lancia Stratos was a supercar like no other, but with just 492 built, values are vast. So what if you could get then Stratos look, sound and pace for £30k? Step forward Lister Bell STR kit car.

    If there's one kit car capable of leaving us besotted, it's the Lister Bell STR, a newly developed Lancia Stratos replica that is exquisitely put together. The appearance is bang on, the attention to detail is superb...and the driving position is better than the original's. Power comes from a 2.5-litre Alfa Romeo V6, which makes the right noises and, with about 190bhp, the right amount of shove. It steers and handles really sweetly, too. That you could put a lovely one together yourself for less than £30,000, or have a turn-key car for not much over £40,000, sent a lot of our staffers away to examine their finances.

    I had the pleasure of following an STR on my drive back home on the Oswestry border two weeks ago. The roads were wet and it was still raining.He was in front of me, and I was heading to a junction where I turn right, at which point the road turns into a 5 mile sprint on windy roads, straight to my front door. I was delighted when the STR, was also turning right! When the few cars n front of us both turned off the main road at a major junction, the STR driver planted the throttle and I heard the Alfa V6 rev up. I kept up in my Audi S4 (V8) without trying too hard on the straights, and as we went through the bends I was impressed at how sure-footed the STR looked through the corners and the entry speeds in the wet! It sounded amazing, and had so much road-presence - it's a beautiful car and I hope I can catch the driver again some time to have a chat with him and if I'm lucky have a sit in it! If I had £40k to spend on a toy I'd go look at an STR, given Ferrari 360 prices have climbed so much!

    That Stratos is still BEAUTIFUL to this day in a way 1/2 of our modern "supercars" will never be... I'm still gutted Ferrari couldn't see the brilliance of the new "retro" 458 (???) based re-make, but it's awesome to know that there's a kit-car maker keeping the beauty alive in this modern age. And from looking over their site, it looks to be a work of art under there worthy of the original esp. if you could find and fit the Ferrari V8 and other pieces for the M model...

    Food for thought for our American cousins. reading the comments it seems quite a few would like to import this in kit form.From memory the original Stratos was never sold in the states due to it never meeting US legislation for emissions and a whole host of other issues such as pedestrian impact/headlight positioning etc. Lancia never built it as a road car, it was always built to win rallies, but a certain amount of Stradales had to be made available to the public for homologation purposes. I wonder if those rules would apply today to the Stratos kit?

      Bart ten Thije I've got an '83 porsche 944 that's just what You mentioned! Stereo's broken, no power steering, power brakes but the kind that still need a little effort. Car is light and raw, plenty of road and engine noise. When I drive it around here it's like having the smallest car around as everything is so huge now, even Honda Civics!
      Back "seats" will hold a decent amount of stuff, as will the rear area under the hatch. Best of all You can find decent 944's for under $5000, turbo models in some cases too, and parts are available, and kind of reasonable. There's also still plenty of knowledge base out there so finding information is easy. So while You might not be able to get a Stratos, there's options out there cheap!

    Kit cars are almost a cruel joke of nature. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying they are bad. What I am saying is they don't match the normal human maturation cycle.
    Example: When I was young I wanted a kit car so bad I couldn't see straight. Problem is, when I was young, I didn't have the money or the patients, diligence & skill to assemble one. Now that I am older, I have the money, I have the skills but my taste in cars has changed. Life just isn't fair.

      +shananagans5 Speak for yourself, mate!
      It only takes a casual glance at Total Kit Car, Kit Car Builder or Complete Kit Car magazines to see many builders are middle-aged and older. Empty-nesters and retirees have more time, money and space available to indulge.
      When does a classic-looking car lose its appeal? Only when you can't have a practical daily driver to complement it.

    • @shananagans5
      @shananagans5 8 лет назад +1

      Paul Azadian Absolutely. Those are the much smaller % that can afford it & have the time & skill & haven't shifted their interests.
      Now, I am more interested in a classic Porsche or something like that instead of a wild kit car & that's pretty typical but,as you point out, not everyone changes taste as they get older.
      There certainly are some 50+ year olds that still want a hot kit but, I can guarantee you, for every 50 year old out there building a hot kit, there are 30+ young guys out there drooling over it but don't have the $$.

      Paul Azadian That is very nice. The quality of things like that has come up quite a bit over the last 20 years. I wanted a Ferrari GTO body on a 240Z back in the day. I was going to put one of those Buick 231 V6 Grand National engines in it. I actually got the Buick V6 & it sat in my garage for 25+ years & I never got around to doing it. Typical excuses, school, career etc.
      I agree, that Kalifornia looks nice. I also agree, I would be reluctant to buy something from a small company in Britain. Practical issues like could you get a new body panel if you get hit or something. Shipping large items overseas is a hassle etc.

    • @speckledjim5150
      @speckledjim5150 8 лет назад

      shananagans5
      Yeah, shipping is killer. Plus you'd have to deal with typical fibreglass issues over time.
      That Kali is an MX5 underneath, so I'd want to get a NA V6 in there, most likely the Mazda 2.5 or whatever.
      If someone here had the molds, it would be my next weekend car...

      Baktash Bootorabi The GTA V6 (the famous Busso engine which was built 30 years till 2005) had a good sound but was a delicat bitch for valves adjust. For better emissions, the Alfa 166 got the heavy GM Holden V6 which is a dog, an overweighted lazy dog not made by Alfa, even with a tuned exhaust. The naturally aspirated V6, new Penstar 3.6 L of FCA is much better and best turbo v6 today are maybe the Nissan GTR and Martinelli's V6 3 liter made for Maserati with a US cast alu block similar to the Penstar block cyl spacing and tis V6 was developped alongwith the similar 3.90 liter V8 for Ferrari calif. T with the same unique Ferrari DI syst. and twin turbo. Philgood
      Note the best V6 diesel is definitely the compacted graphite cast iron Audi TDI V6 3 l. which does not soud like a diesel but runs like one...

    • @gufo_tave
      @gufo_tave 9 лет назад +2

      Philippe Suter Strange... the Alfa 166 was designed before the joint Fiat-GM. For what i know, the 166 never had the GM Holden V6, only the Busso engines.

    • @philgooddr.7850
      @philgooddr.7850 9 лет назад

      Gufo_Tave you are right, the Holden came only in the alfa 159 , the 166 had the Arese Alfa Romeo (Busso) at 2.5 and 3 litres, I missunderstood the video thinking that Lister Bell fitted a current emissions compliant V6 engine, the one of the 159. The Busso makes this Stratos replica certainly more attractive on tracks but impossible to certify at Euro 6b level here in Europe. Too bad, mid engines Cayman Boxster and evora would have there an ideal italien 6 cyl. conterpart since the 4C is small and a F488 GTB downsized to Martinelli's V6 too big. The Ferrari Dino and Lancia Statos show that historically such market exists: the Renault Alpine will be an expensive GTR power train poorly packaged if it comes up, so there is room for more. Philgood

    1:47 the air intake is terrible. The Alfa V6 engine is amazing but its will be hot as hell in the engine bay, need to get a proper cold air intake. It looks like a good car though.

    • @abagnalejr123
      @abagnalejr123 3 года назад

      "The air intake is terrible", a bold statement for someone who has never seen one. Children and their "proper cold air intake" fixation. The cone air filter is situated immediately behind a cool air intake in the left hand side of the rear clamshell. The clamshell itself is exceptionally well ventilated by use of louvres. Effectively the engine is open to the ambient atmosphere, plenty of room for thermal management, unlike in your escort. Get your facts right.

    I think a kit car is perfect for things you wouldn't do to the real thing. For example putting carbon bits on. Or putting a big engine (2JZ for example) putting a spoiler on or just driving it really hard.

    • @4420kef
      @4420kef 8 лет назад

      I was thinking 'bout 2GR-FE S, too. It did good in Evora S and in this car it will be a blast. 2JZ willn't work, 'cause it will pain in the ass to convet it to transverse position. I was thinking about Audi's engine from S3 (2.0 TFSI), it goes with manual and i think it will fit. Or just go full NUTS and put one from RS3 (RS3 2.5 TFSI), but it goes only with stupid 7-speed S tronic and that's big "no no" is Stratos. I'm talking that it will need to be new suspension, brakes, tires and full on rigidity uprate.

      If you have the $30 grand kit imported to states like Oregon then after building it you can license it as the same car it is replicated as. After this you can drive it anywhere in the USA because it's title will say Lancia Stratos on it. Your insurance will be less than an original Stratos also :D
