I only ever drank bourbon with ice, then one day I saw a bottle of Glenmorangie on the shelf in the grocery store and thought "what the hell". I took that first sip and it was like an epiphany. It really changed everything. It's been a long whisky journey since then, and Glenmorangie tastes so boring now, but it'll always be my first kiss...

My journey started with Glenfiddich 12 then Glenlivet 12 then Glenmorangie 10, which was also the first bottle I ever purchased. Dabbled in an array of scotch over the years and eventually Lagavulin 16 and Ardbeg Uigeadail then took things to the next level. 300+ different scotches later, I love that I still find something unique and exciting with a new whisky I’m trying for the first time. A fun journey indeed!

Dear Ralfy, thank you for your great videos which I have been watching and appreciating for many years. You have often given me valuable and helpful information.
Before 1999, I knew Glenfiddich only by hearsay or from the supermarket shelf.
In 1999, during my first and three-week trip to Scotland, it was the Glenfiddich distillery that I visited first, together with my wife, and that left a lasting, positive impression on me.
And it was indeed the Glenfiddich 12 that started my personal single malt journey.
Please keep up the good work; you are my personal reference source for whisky and everything around it!
Many greetings from Vienna / Austria

As someone who has already delved into the whisky rabbit hole, I would not mind revisiting Glenfiddich 12 or trying the anCnoc 12, as money is tight this time of year, and I'm thinking of just picking up a budget malt if I buy anything for myself in December. The Glenmorangie's new packaging is enough to put me off, though. They took what I thought was a really nice and elegant bottle design and completely over-emphasised the curves and flaring neck, and the label is just childish. I know all that counts is what's inside, but the flashy and dumb new design signals that the company isn't putting their money where it should. Sure Glenfiddich also changed their design, but it's not nearly as bad.

lol hey I've had some decent cocktails with monkey shoulder. They've had to change the original recipe and sub in other distilleries to keep up with demand; is now labeled as "3 Speyside distilleries". Don't think it's even aged 6 months lol. Though it's guarded which other Speyside distilleries they use, could probably find out with enough digging. Or Ralfy might know haha.

Hi Ralfie. Thanks for another great vlog. I was sure i could guess your 3 picks but could only manage 1, the Glenfiddich. I too have been drinking whisky for over 30 years both blends and malts but my knowledge is insignificant compared to yours, in fact a great deal of what i do have has come from you. I think you are too modest in saying your not an expert as your knowledge far surpasses many of those who claim to be. My personal 3 beginner picks would be the Glenfiddich 12, Highland Park 12 and maybe a Springbank 10 (or a Glenkinnchie). All the best and looking forward to more vlogs in 2023

Before watching the whole video, my guesses are: Lagavulin 16, Caol Ila 12, Ardbeg 10. I'm totally biased toward peated whiskeys, but that's what I would recommend starting with. I've had great success turning folks on to single malts with Lagavulin 16. Friends who have had bad experiences with whiskey have been surprised and delighted that they actually like it.
After watching the video: It looks like I was wrong, lol.
I guess it's a different philosophy, but in my opinion, if you want to turn someone on to something, give them the best of it. Don't hide it from them, or assume they're not ready for it. I never appreciated literature until I read Tolstoy. I never appreciated poetry until I read Keats. For some things, paradoxically, it's best to start at the top. Not that Lagavulin is the top, but you know what I mean, hopefully.

Today I thought "the heck with it lets try something floral" and got the Glenmorangie 10.... Grave error.... I'm sipping my first glass looking at this video cursing the gods I didn't see it before... although what you said about intense flavours puting beginners off is generally true, it was actually trying laphroaig 10 that made me interested in single malt scotch. rather than the intense flavours putting me off, it actually overwhelmed the general 'whisky' taste and spirit burn and was as if a veil was pulled out from over my eyes and i could see all these different layers of taste and smell. nowerdays i find standard 40% laphroaig 10 a bit simplistic, but i always keep a bottle as both my anchor and as an introduction to whisky curious friends

I would say that starting with bold, different malts is also fine. I started with Islay malts and it was that assertive difference between their style and everything else that made me love scotch. Starting with a boring malt might result in somebody just thinking all scotch is sweet and bland and mediocre, in my opinion. I’ve tried to introduce several people to malts that way and several by showing them bold malts and the ones I show the bolder malts to tend to stick.

I dabbled before in some whiskies but never really for sipping much, but when I did I bought a bottle of Bowmore 12 because my brother wanted to try an Islay whiskey. We were fully expecting to not like it, but it blew my mind on the first sip, and I've been a fan ever since. Now since then I've had the pleasure of many single malts, blends and bourbons and the like and the only thing that regrets it is my wallet. I always find this kind of comment bizarre. A lot of scotch single malts are much sweeter than a lot of bourbons. The only generalization about bourbons against scotch single malts that holds true is that a bourbon will always be a lot heavier on oak, If someone says they don't like bourbon because of all the oak, I say fair enough. Too sweet compared to scotch? Nonsense.

The colorful rebranding of Glenmorangie reminds me of another I encountered recently. I had tried Hudson Manhattan Rye in a bar and liked it - it is a rather funky and aggressive rye, definitely not for beginners and probably not for everyone (it is polarizing - online reviews are all over the map). I looked for it and couldn't find it, but then I found out that they had rebranded it as "Do the Rye Thing" and used a rather garish and colorful label which is quite a contrast to the understated and elegant previous version. I bought the new version, and it was similar to the version I had in the bar, so I was satisfied with it, but this shows how a rebranding can be confusing. Still, what ultimately matters is the liquid in the bottle; the style of the packaging is a superficial detail.

    • @goldenphoenix4475
      @goldenphoenix4475 Год назад

Yeah, but details do matter when it comes to something like whisky which has a reputation and image. I can't imagine drinking a pink bottle of whisky and won't likely buy this childish orangie bottle of Glenmorangie. Careful mate, the devil is in the details, and so is the difference!

Happy to see the An Cnoc 12 in that line up Ralfy; but I would have given a shout out for Compass Box Orchard House as a blended malt that wouldn't overly challenge someone new to whisky - in fact, it would bring much pleasure to any novice or enthusiast alike.
Noticed you're still avoiding the NAS offerings Ralfy - will any of them feature in next year's reviews I wonder 😉??

Glenfarclas 10 (singular malt experience… or the 12 for a bit more light sherry experience), Arran 10, Glencadam 10.
For a first peated …Ledaig 10 or go Islay with Ardbeg 10… that doesn’t work then Lagavulin 16.

My good friend started me with a side-by-side tasting of Cutty vs Glenlivet 12. I noticed the jump in quality immediately. That was a nice start. I never really took blends seriously after that.
Years later, all Glenlivet tastes very light to me. Even the 18 is like... "Ok, but this should have been more." But that's just how the journey goes.

Ancnoc 12 is about $52 here in the States. About the same price as Highland Park 12, Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban, Glenfiddich 14 Bourbon etc. i started out with JW Black. That helped me acclimate to Islay which are the most challenging compared to Highland Speyside etc. This common and cheap blend helped me to ease into Lagavulin, Ardbeg, Bruchladdich etc. JW Green $50 is a great next step for beginners and something I still enjoy today. I think blends can be a good way to introduce oneself to the different regions. I just found Glenlivit 12 and Glenfiddich 12 boring compared to JW Black when I started my journey.

I'm not a complete virgin whisk(e)y drinker. I've been drinking the likes of Jameson standard whiskey, Connemara and Bushmills. If I am starting on a journey of single malt and other Scottish whisky, should I still go for one of these three? By the way, buy "Search For A Whisky Bothie" by Ralfy. Great book, well written in Ralfy's inimitable style. A mixed mash of mostly mystical mayhem and magical malty monologues, not to mention mendatious marketing and mortuarial memoirs!

I went to Ireland a few years ago and fell for West Cork Blended Irish Whiskey Cask strength, and at 62% it is awesome, However in Glasgow Centre I found two other Whisky's, i found what I can only describe as an alternative of perfection, the first is Glenlivit Oloroso Batch OL0818 at 60.2%, or the alternative Fable Folk chapter two at 59.9%, all three utterly gorgeous and in my safe section to be drunk only with my bestest mates. When it comes to 'basic' whiskies, I must admit that I'm more inclined to look at the offerings from Lidl and Aldi.
Lidl's peated malt-blend, Abrachan, is well worth a go at £15.99. I bought two bottles in the last 12 months. Famous Grouse do a blended peated scotch for a few pounds more, but I'm sure the Abrachan is better.
Good to sip neat, but if you use it in a cocktail or with a mixer at least you're not using expensive single malt.

Sadly lidl here in Slovakia and czech rep. only sells Ben Bracken Highland and Speyside. They stopped to sell Islay version few years ago. I don’t know why. But I must admit that for that money it’s a great, young whisky

@@ZhuJo99 I noticed yesterday that the Abrachan had gone up in price to £16.99 in my local Lidl, but that's still good value.

@@jonathancole833 well I’m mostly fan of the peated whiskys - Ledaig 10 got me into it half a year ago. Before that I had an opinion that all the wiskys are the same - boring, almost like cogniac - soap taste. Well, same opinion has many people here in central europe as many uninformed consider JW Red as a premiere whisky. Ir they go and buy Tullamore in supermarket (to be honest, while sweet, it’s not such horrible thing to drink at parties - but not to really enjoy each sip as drinking slowly alone).
Peated whisky really opened my mind and now my collection is quite nice, I also enjoy nonpeated whiskys. Glen Fiddich 15, Glen Moray 12, ordered Speyburn 10 46 %, Glwn Morangie Quinta Rubin. These are really nice (in my opinion) that are not that expensive.
Still prefer Ledaig, Talisker 10 is nice (and can be bought in Tesco). Have also Laphroaig 10, ordered bottles of Port charlotte and Ardbeg Wee Beastie.
Therefor I really don’t like the fact they stopped to sell peated Islay in Lidl here.
Tried and still have Finlaggan Original Peaty as el cheapo drinking - well, nothing special, too watered for me. It’s been open for two weeks, I went through 2 dcl of it and honestly, I already start to feel it’s peaty aroma is almost gone.

The first bottle of whiskey I ever bought in my life was Famous Grouse. Absolutely hated it gave up on whiskey for years. Always was told single malts were better than blends so I decided to give a single malt a try but an Irish single malt. Bushmill 10 year. Absolutely loved it so dipped my toes into Scotch single malts with Glenmorangie 10 and now I’m a huge fan of single malt whiskey. I’ve even dipped my toes with Islay with Laphroaig 10 and love it. Actually went back to the Famous Grouse and while it’s still my least favorite Scotch whiskey but I was able to drink it.
