Have had ours for 3+ years. Use it for secondary heat and it does put out. I really had to learn the process to get around the black glass issue. Now mine runs nice with 90% clear glass and 4-6 hour burns. I engage the catalyst somewhere above 600. I don't start to damper down until I get above 850. Beautiful ribbons and waterfalls of flame. I don't damper it all the way down. Lowest I go is around 20% open. I clean the glass while wearing thick gloves between loads with Magic Wooly Bully while the glass is warm to hot. I don't load it full and I am burning dried oak, maintaining a burn temperature in the mid 900's. If I want/need higher, I load up more at the start. Thanks for the video!
Wow thanks for the honest and perfect review, and I can say that being an owner of a CI2600 for 4 years now. You have hit the nail on the head with everything you said. I do get a better air wash on my glass, I only get blacked out 1/3 on each side leaving a good portion in the middle for viewing the flames. I have tried every trick and tip and can not get more then an 7 hour burn that will put out good heat. Yes 10 hours later I have some good coals to start a new fire, but it fall far from what they say it will do. Thank you again for a great review for everyone. I say on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the best, this insert is a 2-1/2. I would not buy again. But if you are the person that wants to add a extra heat to your house and you are planning on living there for a while 10+ years and don't mind the blacked out glass, then this is a great hobby heater insert.
Hi Regency insert owner, it's Michael K again, was just thinking about your glass blacking issues, now I don't have an answer to stopping it from forming, but I found a great product a spray that takes it off and cleans the glass with ease. It's from Imperial called IMPERIAL CLEAR FLAME 2 in 1 Glass & Masonry cleaner. You can get it on AMAZON you don't have to, but AFTER I easily clean my glass I use. IMPERIAL CLEANER & CONDITIONER, I think it helps. Hope this helps, it does work, and I burn just about 24/7 Mike
Very good review. I have one of these and the positives are: looks nice, love the flame appearance, large wood box. The negatives are: Biggest negative - dirty glass with every burn, short burn time. I only get 3-4 hours of burn because if I close the damper 1/2 or 3/4 of the way, the glass really gets dirty. I clean the glass after every burn with damper all the way open which gets old.
I have a similar model... Hi400. I use Meeco's Red Devil 702 fireplace glass cleaner about once a week during the season. Spray, soak, wipe away. Sometimes in the corner I need to reapply. But it makes the glass crystal clear and I see the flame all the time.
My glass is typically 90% clear - when blackened after a fire's died out, a hot fire will clear it back up. I wouldn't let "black glass" deter anyone from buying this as it's simply not the case from my experience if you use dry wood and burn hot fires. Another "hot tip", use a little ash on a cloth to clean the glass. Crazy how well this works.
Been in the business for 32 years, u can get view as well as that level of efficiency from other brands. I wont push a brand but its completely doable.
As others have pointed out, a good hot fire clears up a lot of the smoky glass issues. If you’re all about getting a 14-hour slow burn though, be ready for lots of black glass.
I always prime the fireplace by putting a small space heater in with the flu open and door mostly closed for about 10 minutes before starting a fire this way the warm air from the space heated primes the flu and sends the smoke directly up the chimney so I don't get smoked out in my room, it works perfectly
Hi there my lower left lever which I assume is the damper doesn't move all the way side to side. The instructions aren't great on the controls and operations. Maybe if you've had a bunch of these or if you sell em you know...but a guy who gets one for the first time is in the dark here on simple directions. I don't need a complete description of all the tiny details, just the operations of each control simply put. Anyone have some simple straight forward tips in one paragraph? Lol thanks
We're very interested in purchasing one of these (Ci2700) but getting turned off by the comments about the glass blackening over quickly. I see most of the comments are from a few years ago. The brochure from the store indicates "Non-obtrusive air wash curtain keeps glass clean." Is this an update from the model described in this video? Is blackening glass still an issue, or have they corrected that problem with a modification/update? Thanks.....
Oh yea, after i get it running at about 1000 degrees , I’ll close the damper down to about 1/2 for a 8 hr burn , with rolling flames. I’ll make you a video when i start burning.
Hi Any chance you know of a video on how to fix the damper? I have this model, and it isn't going back to the left. I'm looking at the manual to see if I can figure out what's going on, but so far I haven't figured it out.
Question on use of your primary air. Do you shut it completely at night? I believe your door glass wash air supply comes from your primary. So if you close all the way you are essentially removing air keeping your glass clean. Try keeping it cracked.
I can tell you it has an air wash system that cleans the black residue off the glass when you get it heated up. I always get about a 6 hr burn by keeping the damper open, and catalytic com buster bypass closed. The only time i shut the bypass and damper is when i go to sleep. Yes the glass gets black when you shut thrown both bypass and damper, but i get rolling flames when only closing the bypass.
I'm super confused about this review, as it seems this stove is never being run at the proper temp. The instruction manual literally says to run it hot enough to clean the glass (500-600 C | 932 - 1112 F) - which is clearly not being done. How are things going these days?
Do you have to have to clean the chimney with this unit? We inherited this from the previous owner of our home and I’m not sure if I need to call someone to come and clean it.
Glas won’t darken if u leave it half damped for couple hours till cat stops glowing bright then closer off all the way and turn fan off, still get 12 to 14 hour burn and holds house temp. I am very happy with this stove wouldn’t purchase anything else.
Hi Stew - I just purchased this unit and it has been heating our house for sure. 30F outside today and mid 70's inside all day. Could you explain in detail your process for daily and overnight burns. I'm currently using "dried" oak i purchased from a landscape supplier. Some of the wood is good.. some of it could do with a coupe of more months. Some questions: - I saw on the Regency website they said to load front to back (instead of side to side). I can fit 16" logs front to back but they come close to the glass. Will it damage the glass? How do you load it for overnight burns? - Is there a max cat temp i should be worried about.=? I was getting to 1200F but again the video on the Regency website showed temps around there too. - Is it just me or is the blower not turning on automatically - even after like 2 hours of solid run time? Thanks!
Loading front to back works best for all the perks advertised for this model to work full potential, I use mainly 14 inch length for that but I have burned longer wood right up to the glass for hot long periods and never effected it in any way. Sometimes if the blower isn’t kicking on automatically when you figure it should be hot enough I will sometimes klick it to manual for a couple seconds then back and it should run on auto then. If it doesn’t work and you want the blower running leave it on manual and after awhile when it is warmed up more try auto again then it will shut off once the fire is out and cooled off. So overnight burns front to back as full as possible and the cat temp is fine at 1200 I’ve had mine hit 1300 before I think I remember reading not to exceed like 1600 or something so no worries there. If the wood you are burning isn’t dry it definitely won’t run as advertised and I believe anyone who has issues doesn’t have dry enough wood for a cat stove.
@@stewwoodman783 Thanks for the reply Stew. My burn times are improving and got the blower figured out. Removing those tabs at the front of the stove helps pack more logs in too. Thanks!
Great review, I just got mine, a CI2700, I do exactly what they say in the manual but there seems to be no way of getting around the smoke billowing out when I open the door to load or tend it, what do you do. Thanks
Hey Doug, Ive had the insert for a year and the smoke billows for me as well. My chimney is only 12ft10in from top of the insert to chimney opening. I'll be extending that asap. I basically find the draft control useless right now. I can keep the glass way cleaner than the guy in the video, but I have to really warm up the flu first before engaging the catalyst.
Question for anyone who has this or the newer CI 2700 model: Does your dampener close enough air off to fully put out the fire? Or at least come close?? I have had mine for a few weeks now and I've really been trying to get it dialed in, but when I fully close my dampener down, I still have lots of flames in the box. I notice a difference in the flames, but only minimal. My experience with other wood burning stoves has taught me that fully dampened, it will come close to putting your fire out if not completely put it out. I'm assuming I have air leaking in somewhere or that is getting past the dampener. Just curious if anyone else has had this problem (BTW... this was professionally installed by a licensed dealer)
What’s better out there with the new technology? Looking for the best wood insert out there, but also considering the classic wood stove. Regency say they make pro series to last 24 hours?
Corey Mogren you won’t find those burn times in a wood insert. Regency does make the F5100 that’s a free standing wood stove that will burn 24. The most I’ve found on the market in the wood insert category is this one at 14 hours, which does take some trial and error to get to that 14 hour burn time. Catalyst stoves will definitely get you more burn time, more heat from your wood, but they can be a pain to learn and deal with. They are also higher maintenance stoves. Hope that helps.
Apparently as soon as the thermostat reaches active engage the catalyst right away but don’t damper air flow for half hour and that will heat everything up nicely and keep glass burned off better for you, if that’s not already how you run it give it a try and let me know. I’m on the verge of buying the same model and would like to know if it helps.
Stew Woodman yes I have tried that I just did that for demonstration purposes. I usually leave it 1000 degrees until the house heats up then damp it down.
Stew Woodman as long as it’s under 20% moisture I wouldn’t be afraid to. I would probably mix it with a fir or a hardwood if you can. The key with this stove is making sure your wood is as dry as possible.
Good review. We inherited this in our house from our previous owners. What do you mean by 8, 10, 14 hr burn? Do you mean that your stove is staying above a certain temperature for 14 hrs? Also, in your discussion with Stew, you mentioned you do not engage your damper until 1000 deg... what temperature do you engage your catalyst?
No because of the fact that the catalyst would get too hot. The fan helps keep it in the right range. I guess if you damped the air down it would be possible but then you’re losing a ton of heat up the chimney.
Enviro is good if you're not looking for a catalytic stove. I have the Boston 1700 insert and it's beautiful and heats really well. We get 6-12 hours between reloads depending on how hard we're running it. We use it for ~90% of our heating.
It's not even cold for more than 5 hours where I live. LOL What do these things cost...seems like all the dealers want to deal instead of just giving a price.
Thanks for this- I am in the process of buying this as well for a mountain cabin and can't wait for the heat! You mention PNW - whereabouts are you? I am in the Seattle area
I see tons of big beautiful flame in mine. Its simply not true that this unit does not produce big, beautiful flame. If you leave unit on at full air flow you get lots of flame. When you restrict the air to the fire for "long slow burn" thats when you don't see flame (as expected). I'm 100% happy with my unit and recommend it to anyone trying to decide. Its extremely efficient and a plain good looking unit. Also to keep the glass clean simply use any cleaner (or even water), dip the paper in the ash, and wipe. A tiny bit of grit from the ash keeps the glass crystal clear without scratches. Best unit on the market.
Michael Cartwright probably a dumb question here but, does anyone use this insert with the door open? I’m in the market for one and had an older insert in another home that I routinely used with the double doors open. Granted it wasn’t nearly what the new units are efficiency wise but it was like having the best of a true wood burning fireplace and an insert in one. Thanks!
@@theinternets7516 Well, but could I use it with the open door to watch the flames and hear the fire for a couple of hours? nothing wrong with that? thank you in advance.
@@etraud1973,you would have to be careful not to over fire it but otherwise you could use it that way assuming you're okay with the massive heat loss up the flue. At that point it's basically just a regular fireplace so as long as you feel like the ambiance is worth the inefficiency and you're not over firing the stove it's not going to hurt anything. Make sure you use a fire screen.
Hi, the blackened glass may be from air leaking between the door gasket and stove body. I suggest removing a set of spacers from the handle side to get a better seal.
I have the same stove. For solving the glass blackening issue, I am thinking to put a removable glass inside the stove, just lean against the door glass, need to install four screw on the door frame to hold the removalbe glass so it won't fall back into the stove. And now only the removable glass gets blackened, and you can easily take it out, and clean (use Imperial wood stove glass door cleaner, sprays the cleaner, and wipe off in a few minutes, super easy). Anybody has thought about this idea? Need to be careful though when handling the glass .
I have a Regency HI-500 purchased 3 months ago .... seem similar to this one although with a different front. It is supposed to have a 14 hour burn, but at best, I get maybe 8 hours when burning maple and oak, even at the lowest setting. Check out this video (ruclips.net/video/1S0L-tEOeM0/видео.html) to see the burn at the high and low setting. Feels like it doesn't throttle down as much as it should. Wrote to Regency... no reply yet.
I have ci 2600 and no way 14 hours... most i ever got 8 hours of heat, that is if you can call it heat. 2 hours of good heat with secondaries blasting and catalytic combustor glowing, then another hour of decent secondaries and than smoldering stage for another few hours with dying heat output. If I put my fan on auto it will be off by the time I am up in the morning.(max 8 hours) 14 hours later I might see some glowing coals in the ash, but that is it, and may be warm glass to the touch. This unit is rated for something like 2400 sq ft. After being away tried to heat my 1400 sq ft insulated ranch style house. Took about 3 hours to bring my temperature up 10 degrees from 40 to 50 degrees without putting my oil burner on, with outside temp being 29 degrees, then finally gave up, and flipped the switch. Unit has 150 cfm fan and as Hvac tech for 30 plus years I can tell you that 150cfm will cover 150 sq feet, no way 2400sq foot space. ( rule of thumb is 1cfm per 1 sq ft)... so it is more like a space heater, it does not reach my outer bedrooms. And yes, I have dry wood, insulated interior chimney and block off plate, restrictor plate, and have taken door washers out for a super tight fit, and also recently replaced my catalyst ($275 on Amazon, made by Applied Ceramics without making any difference. In all fairness I have an open floor plan, my main area is around 900 sq feet with 12 foot ceiling at the center and 8 feet on sides with quite few skylights and large window area, 2 ceiling fans. Bedrooms are regular 8 ft ceilings. Your best bet to get extended burn time is to use as huge logs as possible and stuff the firebox as much as you can, ... but that is a known trick and will work on any fairly modern stove. There are plenty of complaints about this unit on the web, so read them first before plunking $3000 plus installation.
Your stove looks like a newer model, May be Regency have changed the design since there were so many complaints when they came out with this model. My Unit inside where secondary tube is, looks different from yours. Fortunately I did not spent $5000, it came with house. I did spent tons of time, researching on line and fiddling with this unit, trying to get that 14 hour burn time, and advertised heat output. Just returned my catalyst for refund. Going to order another one. Hope that combustor was just defective...Grabbing at straws, i guess (LOL)
Yeah it is a newer mode. Purchased in September of 2017. When I researched them I did hear they changed the air inlet and the top plate from issues they had.
Can you tell me what is your temperature on your combustor monitor from your first through 14 hour. Also can you tell me please how many hours, you get before fan shuts off on auto

No because of the fact that the catalyst would get too hot. The fan helps keep it in the right range. I guess if you damped the air down it would be possible but then you’re losing a ton of heat up the chimney.
@@menssupplyco.3970 would a secondary burn system work better in a power out situation?
Btw, thanks for the reply!
i was looking at this model, what are some other brands that are more aesthetic for viewing the fire?
Ce K The Large Flush Hybrid-Fyre by Travis Industries.
Enviro is good if you're not looking for a catalytic stove. I have the Boston 1700 insert and it's beautiful and heats really well. We get 6-12 hours between reloads depending on how hard we're running it. We use it for ~90% of our heating.
MF fire Nova 2, looks very nice with a great viewing area, don’t know too much about it yet.
Tian Richardson we are in Lewiston Idaho. Glad you enjoyed it. We have been burning nonstop for weeks now. I enjoy it more and more each day!!
Thanks!
@@GS-rj4dq, most people don't. They aren't designed to be used like that way and are very inefficient if burned like that.
David Morfit did that. This thing is air tight.
Its easy to use a single edge razor to clean the glass when its warm, and the door comes off and replaces easily.
For not much more than that you could get a outdoor wood furnace
I have a Regency HI-500 purchased 3 months ago .... seem similar to this one although with a different front. It is supposed to have a 14 hour burn, but at best, I get maybe 8 hours when burning maple and oak, even at the lowest setting. Check out this video (ruclips.net/video/1S0L-tEOeM0/видео.html) to see the burn at the high and low setting. Feels like it doesn't throttle down as much as it should. Wrote to Regency... no reply yet.
It baffles me that a stove with a viewing window would blacken so easily...
Regency gas inserts
Gene Sapicki so I take it you wouldn’t buy it again? Lol.
@@menssupplyco.3970 To clean glass try dipping wet rag into wood ash, and rubbing your glass. Make sure your glass is cold when cleaning
Glass to small, too much metal. Check some europian fireplaces.
Hi, I would love if you put some examples of the ones you are referring to, I am looking to purchase one very soon. Thank you in Advance
