    Attended Hollywood Park a few times. (I am an East Coaster). 1987 Breeders Cup w/my nephew (now deceased). Stood at the rail for the BC Classic between Ferdinand & Alysheba.

      That was a memorable race. I think it was Bill Shoemaker’s last important victory. I remember thinking he wouldn’t have enough left in his tank to pull out a win, but I was wrong (I’m pretty sure I bet on Alysheba that day). Anyway thanks for watching!

    5:40 the moment that guy said his favorite horse was Citation chills ran all over my body. Hialeah Park is still here in Florida & I go atleast once a year to see Hialeah & Citation’s bronze statue.

    So what happened to the statues and monuments on the property when the track was demolished?

    • @90293Mike
      @90293Mike  11 месяцев назад

      Most of them were moved to the Del Mar race track. There is an area at the Del Mar racetrack that displays some of these monuments although I’m not sure that everything was moved there.

      Well I have a lot of good memories of going to Hollywood Park with my Dad in the 1970s so I'm sad that it's gone. But it was in a slow decline and near the end it was in poor shape and really not much fun to visit. I guess we all have to move on. I'm neutral about the stadium being there, but I guess it was a good place to put it, I haven't been there yet but I'm sure I will go some day.

      I also got introduced to horse racing through my Dad, he would drag us all to Santa Anita and Hollywood Park in the 1960s. I actually hated it at first, until I got to the age when I could appreciate the sport and then I pretty much got hooked on it.

    i used to go to hollywood, and santa anita all the time in the 80s when i was a kid.. my dad won 32,000 bucks on one race back in 85.. that seemed like a hell of a lot of money to me.

    • @90293Mike
      @90293Mike  8 лет назад +1

      +youreallbrainwashed That's how I started to get into horse racing - going to the track with my Dad when I was around 12-13 years old. And $32,000 is an incredible amount to win on one race - maybe that was a Pick 6 ticket?

    • @yourallbrainwashed
      @yourallbrainwashed 8 лет назад +1

      +90293Mike as far as i remember it was a pick 6. i remember all the cigarette butts all over the ground.. i actually miss that, lol.. and remember getting the little snap cameras, and cheap banoculars there too.. i miss the good ol days.. thanks 4 posting

    Man they should’ve kept this spot instead of the stupid football stadium, maybe an update to this place would be great in LA we need more upsacle sport staduims like these in LA, thats what’s missing honestly we need more luxurious sports. I only came here once as a young kid & will forever remember that day because it was unlike anything else, it gives me nostalgia watching this just the amount of crowd that actually appreciates horse racing like me. Man these were the good LA days

    This was the very first track I went to in the eighties. We went to see John Henry (he was scratched) must have been 40K people there.
    As an adult, I would go to all three So Cal tracks. Santa Anita, Del Mar, and Hollywood Park. All three had there own appeal to me. Del Mar was the boutique trendy place to be seen track. Santa Anita was the cool looking Art Decco track with the beautiful mountains for the backdrop. Also drew the largest crowds on Opening Day, Big Cap, and of course the Santa Anita Derby Day. Hollywood was run down and let go, it was different from when I was a kid. The beautiful lake was drained half the times, and the flowers were gone. They never had large crowds, except their last day of operation. But still it had its own character that appealed to me.
    It was gritty, and the crowd were legit horseplayers that liked talking about handicapping and wagers. They weren't there to be seen. Also my first score was there, an $800 superfecta. I was so jazzed, I was up all night reading the DRF, and the next morning I thought I wouldn't make it in time. My 4 yo son wanted to see horses so we went. I made it through the gates 10 minutes before the first race, found the shortest line, and placed my wager in the knick of time. YES!!!!!!
    Sadly the industry is dying out.

      Thanks a lot for your story. I grew up going to racetracks with my Dad (mainly Santa Anita because we lived in Burbank) and I developed a real liking for the sport. I agree with you about the distinct personalities of all 3 SoCal tracks. I guess my favorite is Santa Anita because I've been there so much but I enjoyed going to all of them.
      I now live in Playa Del Rey and when I moved here in 2007, Hollywood Park then became my "local" track and I went there a few times a year. But like you said, by then it was in poor condition. I'm actually surprised they limped along to 2013 before it closed.
      Also agree with you about the future, it doesn't look good. If California outlaws horse racing, it will only be a matter of time before other states do the same or the US horse racing system collapses. However, the sport will live on in other countries like England, Japan, etc.
