The reason I love JOJ is because he has way more variation in the colour/intonation of his voice. Like, his Music of the Night is SO smooth and seductive it's ridiculous.
Nobody hits that last final note like Sierra. I remember growing up hearing so many actresses singing this and I always thought "God that last note is high" then Sierra comes along and shatters my tv screen.... I thought I've heard it all lmao.
Though famously (or infamously, depending g on your point of view regarding live theatre) all of the vocals on 'The Phantom of the Opera' scene are pre-recorded.
Agreed. Ramin's voice sounds like warm fire, resonating throughout with emotions. He performs the best The Music of the Night, and John performs the best Phantom of The Opera.
I did in 2010. When I tell you I could not stop crying everytime he sang... I could feel his voice in every cell of my body, It was trutly a once in a Life time
I love John's acting in this scene. Every gesture and movement accentuates the music the dialogue and music. Amazing. He brings it aluve. Add in Sierra with their combined voices, and the scene is perfect.
This is a brilliant performance. John Owen Jones' voice is a PERFECT fit for the Phantom. Sierra here really impressed me with her voice, it was much softer then what I've heard. I almost felt like she was holding back. However, still amazing. These two work so well together, I love it!
John Owen Jones has been the single only person I have EVER thought fit the role vocally as perfect as Michael Crawford himself. Absolutely incredible.
Michael Crawford is forever my favorite Phantom - the almost angelic quality of his tenor coupled with the forboding and tragedy he brought to his performance - the stuff of magic. But JOJ - just sensational. The moment he belts out "Sing once again with meeee" - left me completely mesmerized. Fucking magnificent, and this is just a small slice of a great show. What a treat it would be to see him perform it from start to finish.
This. No one, like NO ONE compares to Michael and his performance as the phantom. He visualised the character from the first time ALW played him the Overture, he was obsessed with the movement and use of his hands to convey the Phantoms torment and vocally he absolutely nailed every song and the emotions give me goosebumps
@Bex Lane Crawford is absolutely exquisite. Homie won that Tony for a reason. He performed "Phantom Of the Opera" with a female singer about a decade ago in a televised performance - his presence during that performance was incredible. He was in a simple black suit, no makeup or anything of course, but he embodied the Phantom with every thread of his soul, so fantastic. I've always loved his Phantom, and his will always be my favorite, but occasionally there's that particular performer that makes you just kind of pause in awe. John Owen is 100% that dude. Just amazing.
John Owen Jones is absolutely AMAZING! He has a fantastic voice and is a great phantom - one of the greatest! PLUS he is the nicest, most funny person ever when you meet him :)
Sierra is always going to be the perfect casting for Christine. JOJ does a beautiful job as Erik. Out of all the phantoms I've heard and seen, I would say my top two are Ramin and JOJ. I feel like Ramin is the perfect casting, as his singing is perfection, his timing is spot on and the aura he gives off just makes him the perfect Erik.
Danny Ashforth okay so you must be thinking of Gerard Butler because Ramin hits the softer perfectly he puts a lot of feeling in his performances. I highly doubt ALW would've hand-picked him to play Phantom in 25th anniversary if he didn't put feeling in his performance or wasn't hitting the softer notes right.
Ramin and JOJ are both quite powerful and soothing at the same time. It's why I can't decide whom I like better. :-D Either way, gimme Erik over Raoul any day! Rroowr!
I like JOJ as the phantom more (despite how dreamy and electric Ramin is ) because this is essentially a story of a young girl beguiled/groomed by an older gentleman (which JOJ pulls like boss). The apparent age difference has be there for the story to have that kick in the stomached!
I am not bothered about previous comments saying Sierra held back her awesome, beautiful voice. What makes my day is finding my favourite Phantom and favourite Christine singing together, what could be better than that, it's shear bliss.
I think John Owen Jones' voice fits the character of the phantom better, but I think Ramin is the better actor (not to mention his chemistry with Sierra is haaaht)
I disagree about the voice. JOJ's voice is beautiful but much more traditional. He sounds like any romantic gentleman in musical theatre. Ramin's voice has much more vocal "ping", which makes him seem more powerful, and his voice is much more unique, which makes him more mysterious.
Recently, I got myself a DVD of The 25th anniversary of The Phantom Of The Opera in which Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess were in it. Also I bought a Phantom movie made in 2004 on DVD 📀 which Gerald Butler and Emmy Rossum. were in it . Now I also want to get myself the stage drama of The Phantom of the Opera played by Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, also the one which John Owen Jones and Sierra Boggess in it as well as the one which Sierra Boggess and Hugh Panaro perform.
John Owen Jones is my fave Phantom since I first heard him singing with Sarah& the other Phantoms at the 25th anniversary. He directly enchanted me with his voice. So glad that I found this version with my fave Phantom [sorry Ramin] & my fave Christine
I'm SO happy John Owen Jones is now Phantom on the west end! he is my favourite along with Ramin, and it was incredible to see him with celinde and the rest of the new west end cast last week!!
This is a completely different interpretation of the dynamic than you see with Ramin Karimloo , Michael Crawford (or any of the others). I love how each Phantom relates to "his" Christine in a unique way (and as his partner, Sierra Boggess follows their lead with confidence and charisma).
I have to say I have seen Celinde Schoenmaker as Christine in London and she is now my favourite Christine, she was amazing and received a massive standing ovation on her opening night, it brought the house down.
Okay. These two are excellent! Maybe the best pairing for the Phantom so far. Just the right timbre and both Jones and Boggess lite vibrato is perfect!
This is the first time I am watching JOJ and Sierra sing this together. Wow. Couldn’t really tell from the 25th Ann performances but JOJ is a super hot POTO! Here's why I say so : 0:43 ahhh the hand … fingers spread … so sexy. 1:13 the way his hands jerked the oar … this may need a R Rating! And though you tuuuuuuuurrn from me - wow that was probably the most sexy I have heard it sung, powerful one second ago and suddenly the emotion drops to dang it sexy! Now we all know what his bedroom voice sounds like! And at 1:32, the way he thrust out his hands so commandingly, yes yes I will take your hands, say no more! 1:44, the way he stiffens his back … that was the sound of me fainting. 1:58, I know we all (mostly) ship Rierra but the hands, the hands of JOJ as he touches her face … if this performance had continued, Christine might have gone off with POTO instead of Raoul haha. And the way he takes off his cloak … whoaaaaa don’t stop, don’t stop! At 2:45, JOJ does that clenching of his fist. Saw Ramin do that too but the way Ramin did it, I must say, it was more sexy because his hand went lower Sierra’s body and then he clenched his fist and pulled it up. I had to pause to get a very icy glass of water to drink and am still in therapy over it! After JOJ licks his lip (I can’t talk about it), he runs his hand down her arm as in actual touching. I don’t remember seeing Ramin do that but I could be wrong. 3:04, the way he stands … very predatory and so very sexy if you like the powerful kind of man … like like!! And his hands, his hands the entire “Sing, sing for me” segment … Definitely a very sexy POTO in case I wasn’t clear earlier haha. Comparing this performance to the Classic Brit Awards 2012 though, Sierra here was pretty passive compared to how she seemed to almost pursue Ramin in that performance (actions wise). Though … I am very confused. This is the year of the 25th Ann performance? But it would seem then that in a very short space of time JOJ put on so much weight, he was almost double in size! hmmm
I was wondering about that too. But then I thought maybe he was at his normal walking around wait at the 25th at the RAH? Like he'd lost weight for this show?
Johns voice is amazing and fits so well with the character. I will admit Ramins acting is a little better but John definitely has stronger vocal abilities.
Forever crying over John Owen-Jones and the fact that they didn't cast him as the phantom for the rah concert. Biggest injustice in the history of musicals.
@@mrjohnjenkins JOJ was the phantom in west end at the exactly same time of the royal albert hall concert. If wasn't for that rubbish "love never dies" and cameron mackintosh stabbing him in the back after years of dedication he put into both Phantom and Les Mis, he would have played the phantom in that concert with Katie Hall as christine, as it should have been. John & Katie actually matched the characters phantom/christine in all aspects unlike other casts people gush about.
Everyone has their favorites, how many Phans would kill for a good quality recording of Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman during their original run on Broadway or the West End? I’d argue if Andrew ever did release something like that it would outsell even the 25th show.
@@sunflower-xi5ct It's not just a matter of preference. JOJ was the phantom when the concert happened, he played the role for years then left and returned in 2010. But most importantly he actually suited the character including in age, acting and voice. Gillian Lynne herself knew that JOJ is the best phantom. It should have been him, but the boomer mercenaries ALW and Mackintosh wanted the nonsense "love never dies" duo, also ramen is considered "attractive" which is so shallow and totally opposite of what POTO is about. JOJ deserved so much better after all the dedication and hard work he put into the show.
@@saxongirl2054 Who the ‘best’ Phantom is really just a matter of personal opinion though isn’t it? The role is one any musical theater actor would kill to have, and every Phantom actor I’ve ever seen has given it their absolute all, no need to tear one down just to lift another up. I love John and I wouldn’t have been upset at all if he had been the one chosen for the 25th show, but I love Ramin too and thought he did an amazing job. And please let’s not pretend that Ramin is the only Phantom actor that women find attractive . Women were swooning over Crawford back in the day and don’t tell me that JOJ is not freakin attractive as the Phantom because that’s a load of bull! 😆
I don't know why everybody is saying that Sierra sounds sick. She sounds perfectly normal to me. Obviously, the click track that they used at RAH is going to sound a lot more powerful and louder than what her mic would pick up here singing live. This performance is a confirmed live one. And I thought she nailed the E6... the number of Christines that have actually been confirmed to have sung that E6 live are very few, though they obviously have to be able to hit it somewhere. But I guess the ones that become Carlottas have the least trouble with it... I think I love JOJ's voice more than any other man's I have ever heard. He's really excellent vocally. And I liked the lip-licking he did lol
The final note is confirmed to be live? It look like it is to me, but it's always a bit hard to tell. I actually prefer this performance over the 25th. I think her pronunciation is less strange here.
@@sxyghost8266 I agree with your preference too. And yes, this is confirmed live and it's the only performance off the top of my head where I know of any Christine singing it live. We can guess that it has at other times, of course. And yes haha, it is pretty hard to tell without confirmation, but most of the time, Sierra's click track specifically sounds pretty obvious to me. And it's probably because we've heard it so much!
Marsaisa Byrd if anything I’d say it’s a compliment to him, nearly - my tops are Crawford, Panaro and JOJ. They’re the only ones who really capture the haunting, controlled insanity of the Phantom that’s beautifully conveyed through his voice.
Fun Fact: John Owen-Jones was considered to be The Phantom in “The Phantom of the Opera Live at the Royal Albert Hall” but Ramin was chosen because of his chemistry with Sierra. {IMO, that’s bullshit because JOJ is a way better Phantom tbh. But chemistry is important. But still, I still feel JOJ is better.}
I'd believe that, even though I don't know if it's true or not lol. JOJ has the BEST voice, honestly. If I had to imagine the perfect male singing voice, his would be it. Ramin's voice is edgier and less trained. But Ramin and Sierra have the best chemistry of any Phantom/Christine pairing I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot of them...I think they play off each other very well when they're acting, to the point where they can anticipate each other.
@@chazj2425 Finally! Ramin was just getting bashed in here even though he’s the more believable actor. Sierra is simply irreplaceable, and her with Ramin in POTO 25th Anniversary is far superior than JOJ with her IMO. I just think Ramin’s voice is better too, even if it is “edgier and untrained”, which I didn’t think so. :/
@@AT-nq1rp yes!! I LOVE Ramin’s voice too, he is my favourite. I personally love that he doesn’t have that perfectly trained sound, just pure amazing raw talent which is even more of a testament to him. Sierra is perfection just like Ramin so it’s a match made in heaven 🤷♀️ can’t get any better then that duo. They are the only ones that are believable for me, and Ramin’s portrayal brings me to tears. Cannot believe so many people hate on him 🤣. Not only that but he is such a wonderful person in real life, just an all around amazing talent and person 🤷♀️
OMG John Owen Jones IS The Phantom ! :) I really really really hope that he will be playing The Phantom again some time cause it's my dream to see him doing the role :)
God damn, what is John Owen Jones doing with his voice when he sings _"In all your fantasies"_ at 2:38? It sounds so ghostly/haunting! (Like an actual ghost or phantasm suddenly swooping in from the distance to speak) I'm trying to recreate that vocal effect myself; it sounds like he slightly/softly gulped when he started to say _"In"_ with the "n" sorta sounding like the Vietnamese "ng" sound, but that's the closest I can guess. Anybody got any other ideas?
The reason I love JOJ is because he has way more variation in the colour/intonation of his voice. Like, his Music of the Night is SO smooth and seductive it's ridiculous.

Though famously (or infamously, depending g on your point of view regarding live theatre) all of the vocals on 'The Phantom of the Opera' scene are pre-recorded.
I absolutely love how John pushes himself through the mist at 3:24, it adds to the Phantom's ghostly nature.
RIGHT! THAT WAS SO COOL!!
His movements are incredible, that's part of why I love him and Crawford.
I have been trained at the greatest circuses and carnivals of Europe.
Ramin's phantom voice may have hit me in an emotional level but holy shit John Owen-Jones has a really really powerful one
São meus fantasmas favoritos!! Sensacionais, ambos!!
Agreed. Ramin's voice sounds like warm fire, resonating throughout with emotions. He performs the best The Music of the Night, and John performs the best Phantom of The Opera.
JOJ has a warm sound and a more gentle way to possess. It is a great contrast to Ramin's more dark and enchanting way. Both make Phantom alive to us
I always come back -JOJ has the perfect voice for the Phantom ❤ if I only could experience this live, I would fly anywhere 🥺

Your description perfectly describes Anthony Warlow. He and JOJ are two of my favourites.
I agree.
I agree with you Karen.
"It's me they hear..." Oh. Oh how he said that gave me shivers. The perfect seduction, power, and control the Phantom should have.
Couldn't have described it better myself
She was going to be the stepping stone for my career in music but she had to team up with Raoul and the French authorities and shatter my dreams!😡
I LOVE the way he sings
"And though you tuuurn from me..."
So much emotion in that line. It's hearbreaking♡♡♡♡
Have seen brilliant John Owen Jones several times as the Phantom and he was amazing, easily the best I have ever seen..
Amazing performance BUT there will never be another Sarah and Michael!!!
This is the first on-stage Phantom I’ve seen that exudes sensuality, and I’m not mad about it. Very sexy Phantom. JOJ knows how to pull it off well.
The moment when you started to doubt if you need to choose between Ramin or JOJ
I chose JOJ
Ramin
Ramin karimloo,of course.
Still Ramin
Ramin forever
There are no words that can complement Sierra boggess accurately. Her voice says it all she is the real Christine. Magical!
John is my favorite singer, his voice is so awesome. All of his albums are perfection.
I think John is among the more talented and versatile actors in this role... Hell of a pair of lungs.
JOJ is literally the phantom with the best voice, every time he opened his mouth,I got chills.
I saw him live in London last Christmas and it was the most amazing experience ever
Norm Lewis
+Kevin Pra Direita? same
+shahdae williams His voice is amazing
His best friend Matt Cammelle was better than him.
In addition to his voice, this guy's hands...fascinate me.
I know right? His movements are so smooth and captivating...
His hands are fair, soft and he moves gracefully, very sexy to me.
So much expressed in those hands. Grace, sensuality, power...ooooof.
This is a brilliant performance. John Owen Jones' voice is a PERFECT fit for the Phantom. Sierra here really impressed me with her voice, it was much softer then what I've heard. I almost felt like she was holding back. However, still amazing. These two work so well together, I love it!
Oh my beautiful
Ramin is better in my opinion.
John Owen Jones has been the single only person I have EVER thought fit the role vocally as perfect as Michael Crawford himself. Absolutely incredible.
John Jones is probably the best interpreter of this amazing opera.

This. No one, like NO ONE compares to Michael and his performance as the phantom. I feel like Ramin is the perfect casting, as his singing is perfection, his timing is spot on and the aura he gives off just makes him the perfect Erik.
I saw John Owen Jones as the Phantom last Thursday at Her Magesty's Theatre and he was awesome!! The way he licks his lip like that is just so hot.

I think it would be interesting to see Sierra play Carlotta haha
She did have a cold at the Brit awards around the same time, it’s much more obvious in that video but not so much here
The final note is confirmed to be live? It look like it is to me, but it's always a bit hard to tell. I actually prefer this performance over the 25th. I think her pronunciation is less strange here.
@@sxyghost8266 I agree with your preference too. And yes, this is confirmed live and it's the only performance off the top of my head where I know of any Christine singing it live. We can guess that it has at other times, of course. And yes haha, it is pretty hard to tell without confirmation, but most of the time, Sierra's click track specifically sounds pretty obvious to me. And it's probably because we've heard it so much!
Wooow!! she looks amazing!! They were both perfect!!
Both the best Phantom/Valjean and the best Christine performing together! I would love to see JOJ and Sierra in "The Phantom of the Opera" together!!!
I like this guys Phantom...sorry bout other opinions but he is the best one i have heard.... no disrespect to Crawford.
Marsaisa Byrd if anything I’d say it’s a compliment to him, nearly - my tops are Crawford, Panaro and JOJ. They’re the only ones who really capture the haunting, controlled insanity of the Phantom that’s beautifully conveyed through his voice.
@@BeWiL0991 Well yes that is where the bar is set.
oh for gods sake what kind of angel can make such a beautiful sound and hold it for all that time Sierra you are my new hero
It's like JOJ was first and THEN ALW created the phantom of the opera just for his voice ❤️
Two legends, blowing our minds away with pure awesomness!!!😁🤩
i love this, they're my favorite christine/phantom pair :) really amazing voices
I love sierras dressing gown! And her hair omg :D
Fun Fact:
John Owen-Jones was considered to be The Phantom in “The Phantom of the Opera Live at the Royal Albert Hall” but Ramin was chosen because of his chemistry with Sierra.
{IMO, that’s bullshit because JOJ is a way better Phantom tbh. But chemistry is important. But still, I still feel JOJ is better.}
john way better than ramin,he should have got the 25ht along side gina beck but ramin and sierra are webbers top of the class types lol
Ramin is way better! Their chemistry is undeniable and I find his voice more appealing and just better in general :/
He has a hell of a voice! and great sex appeal & menace for the role :-D
this is the most odd but really awesome performance of this song ive ever seen like its so quiet in some places but its also really amazing
I saw it 1990 in Hamburg and it was breathtaking!
JOJ is good but the chemistry between Ramin and Sierra can't be topped by anyone.
+BlackMoon Sierra is my favorite Christine by far. I think JOJ has the best voice but I 100% agree about Ramin and Sierra's Chemistry
Ramin and Sierra have great chemistry…… but have you heard Katie and JOJ. They're my absolute favorites.
I bet you only said that coz both hot looking lol
hermoso!!!
Yes it can, Celinde Schoenmaker and Ben Forster
Sierra's voice is gorgeous , unbelievably beautiful
OMG John Owen Jones IS The Phantom ! :) I really really really hope that he will be playing The Phantom again some time cause it's my dream to see him doing the role :)
He'll be on Broadway starting september!!!
I thought it was West-end ?
I read that it will be on broadway
Wait, nevermind, I was looking it up. He will be in London
Great. Was a little bit scary there that i would have booked tickets to the wrong city :)
I saw sierra play fantine and thought my life was complete, then I saw this and realized my bucket list consists solely of seeing JOJ live
It's weird seeing them out on the boat at the beginning of the Title Song, haha.
My favorite phantom of all time
Nicole Rok Mine too.
God damn, what is John Owen Jones doing with his voice when he sings _"In all your fantasies"_ at 2:38? It sounds so ghostly/haunting!
(Like an actual ghost or phantasm suddenly swooping in from the distance to speak)
I'm trying to recreate that vocal effect myself; it sounds like he slightly/softly gulped when he started to say _"In"_ with the "n" sorta sounding like the Vietnamese "ng" sound, but that's the closest I can guess. Anybody got any other ideas?
I had never seen JOJ's Phantom until recently and I really like him. This was a great performance from him and Sierra.
Wow, they're amazing
Vocally, the perfect phantom meets the perfect Christine
In my opinion, Sierra's voice is at it's best when she's with Ramin. They feel so natural together
john's voices is gorgeous
That quiver in his voice 😘
so I watched all the phantoms and Christines. I love the originals they are truly the best
Wow. What a seductive Phantom❤️❤️❤️
Clearly the cleanup of the BP Oil Spill was more effective than we thought; it seems they just put it all in John Owen-Jones' hair.
I think I found a new favorite recording of this song.
I HAVE LOVED ALL THE CHRISTINE'S AND THE PHANTOMS BUT I FEEL THESE TWO ARE THE BEST!!!GARY BAILEY KING OF DARKNESS
