Awesome footage, Glen. The South African Air Force had an illustriuous history... the second longest in years of operation to the Royal Air Force. The SAAF played a valuable role in WW2, including the incredibly intricate Warsaw Airlift. They played a role in the Korean War. I remember all the aircraft in this showreel, and more. One of the proudest moments for me was when all the passengers on the sinking Oceanos were saved by SAAF helicopters. I remember too when many Mozambiquans were saved from hurricane floods by the SAAF. Sadly, these days the capabilities are a fraction of what they were. Oh well!
My father worked at Ysterplaat airbase for many years. The dedication to quality work, ensuring reliable machines saved so many lives. And after going to school in the area I could soon tell the craft by the sound of it's engine.
Very nice footage - brings back a lot of memories. I always feel sorry for those responsible for the building and maintenance of runways. They are never mentioned, although they play an extremely important role
Wonderful memories of a time long since passed! What has happened to our once illustrious Army, Air Force and Maritime Forces? How very sad for we loyal South Africans! I am 81 years young.
Just finished book LZ Hot about Pilot flying Puma Choppers, What training or qualifications did a Flight Engineer on Choppers do eg did they do a trade and then go to Choppers
@JohnSmith-ei2pz i have no expeirence of the RAF, but what does this have to do with a video about the SAAF? Or did u mean something completely different? White feather se gat, whatever u mean by that.
Now unfortunately it's not the proud outstanding Air force we once knew... It's now become All Air with no Force...😢😮😢. Can't afford the maintenance and flying skills of yesteryear... Absolutely Pathetic.🤢

Sailor Malan was an ace during WW 2. He came back and started the Torch commando.
Now, just a shoddy operation that is running out of money
