Do NOT use short interest as a short squeeze indicator, it is the biggest lagging metric for stock analysis as it is only required by the SEC to be reported 2x a month, at the middle and the end of the month. In between those 2 reporting dates many institutions can and do close their short positions. There is no scanner paid nor free that can provide up-to date short interest info because like I said prior, it is not required to be reported
I've been watching a stock which is one of five highest short squeeze candidates, and it went up SOME for op ex, but now has fallen again. Everyone is ranting about it having a 20% short of its shares, it has a very low float, and no more shorts or options are available in it, but it's volume is nothing. How can a squeeze occur if shorts just held forever? I thought they expired Op Ex unless these guys are going months into the future. Can options holders rotate from one period to the next? Why would people claim a short squeeze candidate for any shares at all when Op Ex turns out to mean nothing for the shares shorted? I can't find anybody that gives the actual timetable of a short squeeze. It occurs when the shorts have to be bought back, right? So when is that? And if there's public record of number of shares shorted, isn't there a public record of when they expire?
