Woodturning Half a Log into a Small Bowl

  • About a year ago I wood turned a bowl out of a log I cut in two, and I really liked it. I'm a little better at turning now, so I thought I'd try it again. I didn't go as thin as last time, but I really like the shape of this bowl and the grain of the wood.

    Duuuudeeee. It looks so cool when the rotation syncs with the camera framerate. Looks like the wood is in slowmo while everything else is full speed. And we can clearly see what's happening.

      Yeah I love that too. Unfortunately I’m not the best at working the camera, so it’s hard for me to get right

    So I cut my log, mounted it in the screw chuck… turned the lathe on and IT TRIED TO LEAVE THE ROOM! I have a pretty small lathe, it was reeeally boogying. I cut off a little excess, and once it started to get close to round things settled down. Tomorrow I’ll finish hollowing. Thank you for posting, I wouldn’t have tried this without your inspiration.

    Beautiful shaped bowl and it works perfectly with the grain too 🥰

    The wood grain in that bowl was definitely amazing. I would also imagine that turning bowls were probably some of the first trial projects you began with, but when they turn out this nice, I would also imagine that your home is full of various bowls, as well as many friends and family. LOL!

      Thanks Lynn! Yes I started with bowls from the very beginning. Most of them were “learning experiences” meaning they became firewood haha, but the few good ones I give to family and friends

    Nice little bowl! Two suggestions: 1) make a flat platform around the hole for the screw chuck - that will give a firmer grip and on small bowls you will not even need support of your tailstock. 2) Give a bit more attention in the sanding of the "wings" - elbow grease may be needed but it is worth the effort. Kind regards.

    What size is that last forstner bit you use and who makes it? I can't find any that are bigger than 2" that are reasonably priced. All the ones over 2" they want an arm and a leg for

    That is a very pretty bowl but also very cool video work. I can watch wood turning videos for hours, but have never tried it. How difficult is a making bowl like this, on a 1-10 scale?

    • @CookWoodworks
      @CookWoodworks  3 года назад

      Once you know what you’re doing it’s relatively easy compared to some other things on the lathe. But getting it perfect is the difficult part...

    let me see if I have this correct :), since you only used 1/2 a log and due to the height of the rim the person using it only get's half a bowl of something?
