Started to change the clutch cable on a 2002 Softail Heritage. Went to disconnect the exhaust pipe and noticed how rusty the bolts were. Then I decided it would be worth having the dealer do this instead of risking breaking a bolt off in the head.
One key point that you didn't mention is to make sure the new clutch cable adjuster is run all the way up before hooking it up to the ball and ramp mechanism. It will never adjust out correctly if you miss this step.
@Will-uu8ed he loosened the old clutch cable to create slack. The new cable needs to have the adjuster run all the way up before hooking to the ball and ramp mechanism or you will not be able to adjust.
AWESOME VIDEO! Man I really need to test a street bob with 14" ape hangers before I do all this! It would suck to do this then after you dont like the feel.
can i keep the clutch cable on that bars if i just need to replace the o ring from where the side cover and cable meet? will i need to loosen the clutch cable beforehand?
followed this exactly and triple checked the ball and ramp, before putting it back together and no matter what I do the clutch lever feels like the brake lever. Am I missing something?
Can anyone help me I have a 1990 fxrs, bike will lunge when I put it in gear. I have adjusted the clutch and cable and it is less but still lunges. Do you think the cable is bad and how to test the cable. Any help would be appreciated. thanks
This has got to be the dumbest design for a clutch cable system, if this shit breaks on the road, you're fucked. Happened to me out on a ride, we were able to patch it back together at the lever, but even if I did have a spare cable with me I'd still be up shit creek.

Thread the cable on before routing it, that way you just spin cable.
Good to know cuz I stripped the cover on mine while I was installing the new cable
Thank you, I followed your video step by step while replacing my current clutch cable with a braided one, no issues 👍🏻
The one thing I needed, you didn't show: the routing of the cable 😭🤣
just bought a 2001 heritage, w/ sidecar and jockey shift... like to go back regular way... oh boy... nice video
Would have loved to see how you unbolt the rear cylinder header exhaust pipe.
Brilliant. Cable straight up gravity seated it in two turns. Great video.
My ratchet top cable is a piece of cake. When it dies, I sure have a lot to look forward to!
Thanks for all the informative vids.

isnt that what he did at the start?

@@scotthoult3586 good point, I'll remember that thanks. Bonus question, do you know what type of softail this is?
@@Will-uu8ed I am not 100% sure, it looks to have had some mods to some of the original parts. Looks like a fatboy.
How does the gasket not leak when there is still oil on surface?
Great video. Picked up a new cable from Barnett from you guys, got it in a day and installing later. Thanks you
Thanks!! Please do a Softail 103 cam chain tensioner replacement.... also changing the fuel pump and fuel filter for the same bike.
Best video on this ever. Thank you so much.

Great video getting ready to replace clutch cable on my softail deuce !
Could you drop the oil anyway and refill it after replacing this cable?
What spray is that you’re using to clean it?

What do you do if if you go to install an extended cable and the tread seems to be off and not able to screw it in to the clutch plate ?
How much oil goes back into that clutch box ?
followed this exactly and triple checked the ball and ramp, before putting it back together and no matter what I do the clutch lever feels like the brake lever. Am I missing something?
so you want the mating surface of the clutch gasket dry? is that why you sprayed brake cleaner into the clutch?
I don't like having oil on the gasket surfaces.

Damn I’m happy I bought a Indian, took me 15 min to replace my clutch cable and no fluids drained or exhaust removal, gotta do my buddies fat boy tmr
I dont know if its me or if this is a dark video with not enough light to see clearly.
Whats the length on the clutch cable?
Excellent info
Good job, as always!
Why do shops charge 800 for this? After watching this video I'm ordering the cable and doing it myself
Imagine that doing that on the side of the road! They really could have designed it much better than that

Awesome video thanks
Anyone know if these lines are compatible with dyna lines I would assume twin cam 96+ stuff should all the the same
Buys bars, has to tear half the bike apart. Sometimes i miss my crotch rocket 🤣
How do you adjust the barrett clutch cable....
should be the same adjustment

What type of lube is that? Pink? Not flushing the old pink crap out ? Using brake clean and mixing it with old lube? I see, Redline!
bell ray
Az Desert News I think that is Redline Shockproof gear oil.
Looks like redline to me, good shit!
@@clubstyle_midwest5536 That is correct best trans fluid on the market
What kind of pink slime oil is that ???
thats redline tranny oil.
Dude, you look like Mike from hard2hurt
great video,
Hi, do you need to replace the exhaust gasket before reinstalling the pipes?
That's what he said at the end
Think I'd prefer to just take it back to Falcon's Fury Harley😳
Why change the cable ?
If you are swapping bars to a taller set needs to be done.
Is there a special "trick" for screwing the cable into the transmission cover? I've been turning this for hours and it will not thread
it's fine thread and can be tricky. Sometimes it's easier to hold the cable upright and turn the trans cover on top of it.
Ultimately I needed to use a tap and dye set to clean the threads up. Then it went on smoothly.

132-153” lbs? So 140”lbs is good then?
The initial tq is 132 the final tq should be 153

Apparently brake cleaner fluid is good gasket and trans look? Lol
Great video, despite the loud, annoying music. Perhaps just have something decent, on low volume the entire time, for ambiance?
Am i the only one who noticed this coffee and creme color of the transmission fluid? is this normal?
