Getting this neglected yacht back in the water

  • In this episode we finally launch our classic sailing yacht.
Miss Rosie is a Great Dane 28, built in 1967 and built by Klauss Baess and designed by Aage Utzon.
The Great Dane 28 was inspired both by the Folkboat and the Sisu Spidsgatter. She looks rather similar to the Twister (in the UK), but both her hull and complete coachroof/deck mouldings have always been made of GRP.
Miss Rosie was generously given to us by Angie Martin after her husband Jeff passed away tragically.
Jeff dedicated his life to sailing and more specifically, the Laser class. His engagement with sailors and members worldwide undoubtedly enabled more countries to compete internationally. This subsequently enabled more nations to participate in the Olympic Games and established a legacy for these nations from elite sailing to the grassroots.
In 1981, Jeff became an International Judge and an International Race Officer and Measurer in November 1998. His involvement in World Sailing started in 1991 and he served as Vice Chairman of the Classes Committee from 1991 to 1994 and again from 1999 to 2000. In 2001 he became Chairman of the Classes Committee and a Council representative and held the post through to 2016.
His work worldwide through the Laser saw friendships form with sailors, race officials and global sports administrators. He has left a true legacy to sailing and to all those who were lucky enough to cross his path.
We can't thank Angie enough for this amazing gift and are proud to have been able to get Miss Rosie back on the water and sailing once again..
We have kept the dialogue in this episode to a minimum.
This episode is dedicated to Jeff Martin and to Angie who has become a close family friend.
We are Andy, Melissa and Jack, a sailing family based in North Wales, looking for a bluewater sailing yacht to take us around the world.
We currently have a very small 24ft Snapdragon Sailing yacht based in Caernarfon but there are bigger boats on the horizon.

Superb choice of music. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of splashing one’s boat the first time; especially with the added poignancy of its story. I’ve seen so many boats launched at Mylor but this is the first time I’ve known the background. Special thanks to Mrs Martin for her generosity; it must be good to see Miss Rosie in such loving hands.

Were very pleased with her. We still have her on a mooring by our house so we’ll be sailing Miss Rosie until Melody is ready to launch.

Fixing to buy a 1970 Great Dane that was sailed from Norway 🇳🇴 and the couple that had beer on the boat with their 2 kids were forced to leave the boat in Florida because of Covid and couldn’t return to get the boat sad for them but I’m super stocked on this solid built boat

Jeff Martin was an amazing Laser racer to be sure. Your memorial episode was highly respectful of his family and memory. May Neptune give you safe passage all your days.

Thanks. Yes there’s lots more to do and this winter we’ll be hauling her out for some more woodwork, upholstery and perhaps even new standing rigging. We’ll see. Got other project on the go as well. The next few episodes detail our journey from Falmouth to Pwllheli

@@SailingMelody I look forward to seeing the progress. Falmouth to Pwllheli is quite a trip. I just sailed back from L'Aber-Ildut to Plymouth single handed, took me 28 hours. It was foggy most of the way which made it quite "interesting". Thank god for AIS!

Sailing Moon Shadow we have no AIS on Miss Rosie but we do have radar.
      Can’t afford AIS currently

@@SailingMelody I only have receive function which built in to my Standard Horizon VHF but is sure was an enormous help. Twice I passed within 0.3 of a nautical mile of a fishing boat but, due to the AIS giving me the boat details I was able to call them on the radio to make sure they knew I was there. In the fog that was still pretty nerve wracking. Luckily those guys are ablaze with lights.
