I vote for finishing it and writing “+ 2023” on the cover. I think it will be interesting to see the change in your skills and style over the 7 year gap.

If you flip the sketchbook over you can use it until you meet the other side, it'd be a fun way to use up the paper but still keep the different years separate

I think you should finish the sketchbook because it seems like nice paper and it would be really nice. You could put another like title page in saying Steph’s watercolour sketchbook 2023 to break it up from the 2016 stuff. I loved the tour thank you for another awesome video!

I loved this sketchbook tour! I felt that you used it like we are supposed to use a sketchbook! Trying new and different ways to create art! I liked the idea of flipping the book over and starting at the back and just going on until you meet your older artworks! You get the most out of the awesome paper and you combine the old with the new! I am excited to see what you decide. Oh! Happy Easter to you All!
Always fun to see a sketchbook-tour such a good opportunity to look back on some past memories and videos. Love how experimental and fun this one is. I hope you pick it back up I´ll be looking forward to see more watercolour experiments in there. :) Also we can't let Adam be this triumphant about Steph having a sketchbook tour with this many missing pages forever. :P

Definitely pick this sketchbook up again. You could even make a new start page to show the other works are 2023 and beyond. I feel like Steph has these psychic powers where she knows when the art community needs some special Steph art inspo.

Gah, this is such a throwback!! Seeing Steph's art from the very beginning of the channel reminds me of when I first started watching you guys; this is such a nostalgia trip ;^;
I definitely vote for finishing the sketchbook! I found an old sketchbook a few years back and since i used to only draw on one side of the page, i had decided to pick it back up finish it. It was really rewarding seeing my younger self's art compared to what i could do when i finished it. Some pages i even decided to redraw what was on the other side of the page to have an 'art improvement' moment lol

I say pick the sketchbook up again - maybe the first page could be like a "welcome to the future, 2023" or something like that! I think it could be really inspiring in a video even, because so many of us artists get discouraged if we leave something for a while... I know I do at least... and it would be lovely to see that gorgeous watercolor paper get filled up!

The textured edge is called a Deckle edge! Its from the creation of the paper and is usually cut off in manufacturing unless someone specifically keeps it. A lot of handmade papermakers keep it as well.

oo this vid really makes me want to get out my paints and do experiments! sure, I've done swatches and mixing charts before... but you can never have too many! It's such a relaxing and low-stress way to 'warm up' to painting again if you haven't touched your paints in a while.
This sketchbook seems like such a throwback to when I first started watching doodledate. Even though I am not sure if we ever saw any of these before you can tell it's Steph's old art style.
As for what to do with the note book, well, I know if it were me I'd probably leave it, but then again, it is nice paper it it would be fun to see the sudden change in style and quality when flipping through it years later.
I vote you finish it! It would be cool to see your progress between 2016 & 2023 in the future!

I literally clicked on this video just now because I thought it'd be perfect for me to watch while I put masking fluid onto a watercolor painting I'm just about to start, and literally just when Steph mentioned her masking fluid experiments going horribly wrong, *my* masking fluid bottle just exploded all over my hands lmfao
Oh no!! The masking fluid curse is contagious; darn you watercolour wizards!!
(I hope you were able to save anything that might have been touched by this accident!!)
Experimenting with different mediums........ This is what I need to take the time to do.
Three of the first sketchbooks I seriously did I experimented with watercolor. I don't like to look through them because they look awful and I didn't know what the hack I was doing.
Now through all the knowledge I have absorbed from you two (and all the supplies I've now accumulated) I really need to - and I plan to - start experimenting with all sorts of different mediums.

You should finish your sketchbook! I have a few that are half finished and I feel like it's sooo satisfying to see a compilation of old vs. newer art especially after you've gotten comfortable with the medium.

Glad to hear from you guys! Fun video; it's neat to see the learning and experimentation. The experiments/learning of watercolor I've done have not been in a sketchbook, or dated.
My vote would be to carefully cut out the blank pages and make a new mini sketchbook with the new starting date on the cover =)
I think the limited edition palette was winsor and newton twilight watercolours, you did an excellent job of matching the colours i think!

I think adding to the sketchbook with new watercolor pieces would be a lovely way to finish the book! You could try some of the same techniques you used before and approach them with your current mind and skill sets to see how much you've grown :)
I suggest you make the next page in the book a title page for when you next use it and it wil create some separation between the two eras. And then you don't have to waste that lovely paper 😊. The first part will still be an ode to 2016 and you can compare your style and skills with the newer pages!
Either way your art is so gorgeous. My favourite page was the blue flowers. It's the exact kind of thing I'd want to hang on my walls 😍😘
Some of my favorite sketchbooks are ones where I do half of it, and then come back a year later and finish the rest of the pages, so I say FINISH IT!!!!!!!!

No reason to waste good paper! You can just date the new pages so you know they're more recent. Or maybe do a 2023 cover page to separate it. Something like that. That's what I would do, I think.

I think you should make a page divider that says "7 years later.." but looks like one of those spongebob hour counters and finish it. I totally get ~spirtually~ moving on from a sketchbook, but I started going back through some of mine to finish using the paper.

I'd love to see you continue the sketchbook. You can continue using it as you did in 2016, using it for learning, trying things out, making comparisons.
It's so colorful and fun.
That being said, I understand if, at the end of the day, you decide to keep it as is. There's no pressure to pick up an old sketchbook, fill in blank pages, and call it done once there's something on each page.
Whatever you decide to do Steph, I'm just happy you shared what you had in this sketchbook with us

You could carefully remove the remaining pages and try to make your own little watercolour sketchbook, there's lots of guides around on doing that sort of thing, then you won't feel bad wasting paper but you can still have this book as a snapshot of that time.
Or you could always do a new title page sorta thingy for this year where you'd start that then keep going from there and you'd have 2 different times in one book and it'd be a bit like anthology books or books where they put two from the same series in one book.

I love this so much. Watercolor is my soft spot for art supplies, and I love all the little experiment pages you’ve done! I think a “learning a new medium” sketch book would make such a cool published art book. As for whether to finish the book or not, I vote for finishing it solely because it looks like such nice paper and it’d be a shame to waste it. 😊

yay a doodledate upload! I've been letting the algorithm cycle me through all of your videos over the last few days so, as much as I like nostalgia street, a new upload is always a refreshing welcome 😅
during this video, I tried to do a very 'steph-like' drawing - I've been really persuaded by all the cutetito propaganda so finally bought myself one a few days ago, and ended up with apparently the ULTRA SUPER RARE blue lobster islandito and I really love them so much [sidenote I love how *heavy* they are?? the beans???? the autism is pleased >:3c] so I tried drawing them in a cute round 'steph' style. I don't know how much I super succeeded, but they only take up about 2 inches of the sketchbook so I got the tiny art aspect down.
also, LOVE that blue flower. even all the art in here, I love the stylisation and how huggable everything looks :D !!

Since it's such good quality paper, I would argue it should get used. Maybe you could craft a buffer page or a title card in between the old and new beginning? It could be very interesting to see the contrast in the work when the sketchbook is finished.

I still have a sketchbook from 2014 which I've not done anything in, other than dye a few pages with tea on it. I intended to do some aged sketches in it, similar LOTR and The Hobbit film concept sketches but never got around to it. I even wrote the date in it when I bought it - what a lie the date is...
I have the opposite problem I use gouache too much like watercolour 😭 I’m so used to watercolour and acrylic gouache is so new to me 🤣 I’m learning though… I just got some Holbein irodori gouache and I’m starting to love it !

I mean... it can be both! Drawing new stuff in it while still staying a reminder of the past. You aren't changing the existing drawings, so it will still be a nice piece of the past.

I like sketchbooks as a historical thing.
For me, filling out a sketchbook is not so important as I like to look back and see how I’ve improved, and even with dates it’s nice to have those dedicated sketchbooks for specific time periods
Yeah! I do really like the idea of it being a sort of time capsule of what my art was like at that time. I really enjoyed sharing this with you guys!

Steph enjoys using watercolour like gouache but I enjoy using gouache like watercolour. Never gotten on with proper watercolour but I have some caren dache gouache pans and I love them but I don’t use them thickly and I layer like watercolour idk why but watercolour techniques are much easier for me with gouache pans!
I share your struggle with masking fluid I can’t use it without it tearing up the paper, even sometimes masking tape will do that. I’m at the point we’re I’d rather paint over, or carefully avoid areas I want to to leave white/color in later then use that kinda stuff 😅
the watercolor set was it the Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour Limited Edition Twilight Colours?
if so, the colors are :
Sanguine Red
Quinacridone Violet
Smalt (Dumont’s Blue)
Aqua Green
Cobalt Green Deep
Chromium Black
they seem to be online just not together in a set, but if you were able to get them, you could make your own palette.
since its nice paper if you want your 2016 to be just 2016, you could cut the pages out and use it seprately.
Gosh, so hard to decide if you should fill it with new stuff!
But here's also an idea, go ahead and make new art in it...*but* ....instead of totally new drawings/paintings, make *new* versions of the stuff already in there!
