Those videos comparing 2014 to now are obviously completely different areas of the lake as indicated by the surface being visible in the later portion of the video showing "todays" state.. Any boat running through 2 feet of water is going to hit the bottom, and considering wake boats need 30" of water to even draft properly, there is no way anyone is surfing in the areas shown in the later portion of the video... hilariously biased representation here.
We're having the same challenge in NC and GA. I've heard that the wake boats put up such a wave that lake front property owners lose about 1ft of their soil every year. A friend installs gabion walls filled with rock to keep the erosion from continuing along the waters edge. Since a lot of the homes have a steep grade to the edge of the lake, much of the costly work has to be done from the water off a barge.
Ya'll need to take warning now! Regardless of the fish - your kids will not get in the water when it is a big algea bloom due to the sediment getting stirred up. What will you do then?
I don't care how long wake sports have been around. I have been fishing on lakes across the country for almost 40 years. And it's only been in the last five years that I can honestly say that I get concerned about the safety of my children on my 21 foot bass boat because there is so many waves now. Less than a week ago we got hit by a wave on Lake Hartwell from a wave boat that rocked the boat so hard that it shot my one year-old overboard. They are the only boats that can be an eighth of a mile down the lake and the wake still gets to us where we're fishing up against the shore. They need to be banned from everything but the ocean Before every lake is silted in and people get killed.
@@giantasparagus or they could just ban all water sports and let it be peaceful and quiet again. Let it be a place where a father and son can have a conversation without yelling over idiots all day like when I fished with my father as a kid.

@@georgehoveyjr2329 What a wild and ignorant comment. Ban all water sports is a hilarious take.. Not to mention a bit hypocritical. This video has no basis in fact, created by hyper-biased individuals meant to hoodwink the uniformed using conjecture and hyperbole. Wakesports have been around for decades and cause no more damage to lakes than any other boat. In fact, several studies have been conducted showing waves from wakesurfing cause less damage than nonwakeboats at cruising speed because they lose energy faster. Non wakesport specific boats can be observed digging up sediment as they plow through shallow waters too. This is not unique to wakesport specific boats. Wakesport boats prefer deeper water. Big Cedar Lake has a sand bar located several hundred feet offshore surrounded by 100' water so this video likely captured an unsuspecting boater out in the middle of the lake. What it doesn't show is the hundreds of other non-wakesport boats doing the same thing. As for vegetation, BCL actively cuts and disposes of the invasive weeds like the Eurasian milfoil shown in this video. There is no direct correlation to wakeboats for this, or any basis in scientific fact that this video is trying to claim. The underwater video was probably taken before and after BCL did a weed removal. Don't believe the hype. These are the same people who want all gas-powered boats removed from lakes, want fishing banned because they claim fishermen are directly responsible for all invasive species. Etc, etc. If it were up to these people, only canoes would be allowed for recreation. And shame on The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel for publishing this as though it's fact, misinforming viewers/readers without considering the data and scientific studies countering this false narrative.
@johncerk2618 yeah right. There's people out there fishing every day. There's even guys who make a living guiding on BCL. Perhaps you just had a bad day fishing. It wasn't wakeboats! This is the exact type of hyperbole and conjecture I'm talking about. Zero basis in fact.
This is garbage journalism, anyone that knows anything about wake surfing knows you don't surf in the shallows as it does not produce a wave. You could take a pontoon boat or a Jon boat over that sandbar in this video and it would have stirred up the bottom.
Lots of issues with them here in northern Wisconsin too! They really are something! Bad news all around, and yet you are seeing more and more every year!
Because there is no scientific evidence that they are harming lakes! Surveys have shown this lake has stable vegetation populations, and the cherry picked image of a single spot on the lake is highly misleading and far below the journalistic standard that I would expect the JS to uphold

Very sad to see the JS post blatantly misleading or false information!
Keep lying to yourself. I guarantee there will not be ONE standing weed in this lake come wintertime.

No, it’s the exact same area. You’re destroying the lakes. You will eventually get all of them unless we ban the wake boats.

This is categorically untrue, I have a lake house and a wakesetter 2023. I rip big waves and have no soil loss.
