I just found this channel today, and as much as a part of me feels like I wish I had known about it all these years ago, I also feel I needed an influence like this in my life more today than ever. I recently announced I will go on a hiatus and the thought has kinda terrified me because I have this atrocious habit of putting things off... and it almost stays that way indefinitely. I love art, and have always been an artist/creator etc. but have floundered through life in terms of career and what is it that I want and want to do. Watching these videos not only helps me wade through some of the misty terrain I tread in my life, but also helps guide me to a better understanding of myself and what I want versus what I need to do. I can't thank you enough for making these!
Been thinking of joining Schoolism for a while but wasn't sure. Now I'm sold. The fact that an already accomplished, successful artist will look at my work and critique it and correct it etc., is a huge help and best way to learn besides creating, creating and more creating. Awesome. Love your videos by the way Mr. Chiu and you art.
"If it's based on fear, keep going." Great tip Bobby. Re: "claim to fame". I've got a project in the works that will be rolling out beginning in July. Stay tuned!
I always found valuable your advises bobby...i got 12 years in the making...still got alot to learn. So I feel grateful with life to find you in my art journey..
Such great advice, thanks so much Bobby. I'm going to share this to my fellow art friends back in Malaysia :) They are still studying in art college but I think it'll be wonderful tips for them, and also myself! Ta!
Thank you so much for your wonderful, inspiring videos! I am one of those people who constantly tells myself I'll do all the things I want to (proactively post my art online, do personal projects that I want to, paint the things I want to paint)... once I'm better. And I'm sure it's no surprise that I'm never "better" enough to make it happen. I am going to try to kick my butt into gear and do something that I actually want to do besides just studying all the time, even if I don't feel good enough for it.
Thank you for sharing! As a self-taught artist, I feel like I lack a lot of information, and have much more stuff to learn. Your videos inspire me and help me go back to the "start": drawing, and doing it for real. Thank you so much!
I feel an urge to plant those trees to make a forest. Your words of wisdom keep me at it, even though I'm having a bit of a rough patch since my graduation. Thanks for doing these, Bobby!
Plant those trees Max! The giant bamboo doesn't break ground for a couple years... then it grows 20ft in one year. Your time will come when you continuously work hard.
You don't need to answer this message, but I just wanted to thank you for this videos because they always talk about what's going on in my mind as an artist in one way or the other. Sometimes I get the feeling that I'm in the right path, and sometimes that I could be doing more, but your videos always get me inspired to try my best. So thanks for that!
Wonderful inspiring video Bobby! You describe so clearly everything we need to do to become what we want. Those steps are not obvious and is always good to refresh the mindset. Even if is not so easy as it seems. P.S.: PLITF bracelet is the first thing I wear in the morning and the last one I take off before bed. Is like being motivated by you all day long... :) Thanks Bobby
Hey Bobby I love your videos, I've been watching them religiously over the past week and I feel like I've levelled up in terms of my drawing skills. :D
Thanks for this wonderful dose of inspiration and encouragement Bobby! Can't wait for your next upload! Now off to plot out my slow play and start planting my idea trees.
Hi Bobby! I love your videos they have been so helpful. I also have a membership for shcoolism it's so good thanks for sharing the knowledge. Would you have sometime a course for props and environments, and design in general?
Hi Amaya, a class about design in general... I hope so. I've been asking Jeff Turley. He'd be amazing to teach that course. There's already a class on environment design taught by Nathan Fowkes that's really awesome
Thank you Bobby your videos are so inspiring, I hear somewhere that you should not wait to be artist just do what artists do, you don't need anyone permission right. Last year I started seeing some opportunities myself thanks too your videos getting vision more clear and straighter path
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! Also random but...I like those little sprout things you draw when explaining something. They are so cute XD
I just feel more motivated with this video. I just want to jump of the chair and make the most awesome portfolio ever and it for everyone. Specially when it's my all time favorite artists talking so motivational "to me".
Bobby will there be a class in the future at schoolism on how to become a freelancer... Or even how to put a project from beginning to end... Thanks for the info and I really enjoy the illustrations in the videos of the mini creature with their plant on their head.... Great video...
I really agree with you Carlos it's very important, there is almost no information about it. I wasted 10 years of my life making mistakes and losing money instead of drawing just because I wanted to know how to be an independant artist... Huge regret.
quo s, maybe you could share your experience with beginners, knowing what to avoid can be even more important than knowing what to do on the way to become successful freelancer
Asya you're so right too! I'm still struggling, but I hope my experiences will help. Today I improved my skills and I get a little bit more feedback. I started by stopping to trust and listen to people who said "you can't make it", "art is not a job", etc... especially when it comes from artists, teachers, friends or family because it's disturbing even if I never believed it. Stopping to work as cashier or a cook just to pay the bills because I had no time to draw and it's dangerous, you can broke you arms for life (like my friend), in my case I broke my back. Also finding a job for a women it's harder because people fire women easily for nothing and no reason. After a sucession of failure in artschool, work, traveling, I get back to my parents house, I'm still there. I had to understand that art is a real job first then I needed to understand that it's the kind of job who ask the double of effort, knowing that I won't be payed at the beginning. I worked for free internationally in digital art (for the experiences, because you can't be hired in France without link) and I will not do it again because people think if it's free, it's cheap. The solution was to go back to what I loved, digital art, watching a lot of tutorial, illustrations, listen to artists like bobby, reading, watching movies, series, specialy drawing and taking all my time, slowly, simply drawing without stress and judgement helped a lot. Being nice with myself, stay positif, I don't let anybody drag me down. Very important for everybody, know your civil right, you need a legal insurance cause you'll always find people who will try to screw you (boss, owner, sellers etc). Few month ago I started to sell my work on internet (nothing sold yet), a shop on society6, a patreon, a kickstarter, a tumblr with a paypal donation button etc... I start to see myself as an professional artist who need money to live and be free, I'm more fast and I improved the quality of my art, now I take myself seriously and make a new portfolio of what I love to draw.
Thank you, for sharing your story! For me also, just like you said, once you understood that THIS is a job, and you are profesional, and money from art is going to pay your bills - things changed. Whould you like to provide link to your portfolio?
great talk always enjoy these. I look forward to more of these and hopefully one day you do another interview with guest artist or a chiustream. :) . thank you for the inspiration and knowledge.
Have you talked more about the "slow play" concept? What does that look like in different settings or with different goals/projects? I appreciate these videos - keep 'em up!
Thank You Bobby very informational very informative and very inspirining. I geek overwhelmed at times to know where to start. ibhave all these ideas and plans but seem to get lost on the priority list and level of importance and u seem to coming in at just the right time to guide me! thank you please never stop what u do. question do u have a focus group that you could have that would be available to us. untill we can formulate on our own group to use? hope u also make a video on how to find and prepare for a mentor. thank you. Sir, you're really an amazing teacher! your words are so powerful and it all make sense to me as a beginner artist! thanks for existing! please do make more of these! your stuff is gold! greetings from Bangladesh! :)
Hello Bobby Chiu! This is such an awesome video. I was demotivated this morning but now I am pumped again! Also I just went to Alice in Wonderland 2. It was really awesome and I literally just searched for your name to pop up in the credits and then told the friend I was with there: "THAT'S Bobby Chiu! I watch his videos!" I am saving money for a schoolism course now so let's see where it goes!
Hi Bobby, thank you for this video. All the videos you are making are so inspiring and give me motivation to keep studying art :) I also take self-taught Schoolism course right now, but try to take the premium class in the future!
self-taught is pretty awesome but artist work at a whole other level when we know that we're going to hand it in to the teacher in the video. I know from experience... I take a lot of premium classes as well under a different alias.
Hi Bobby, I always enjoy things you share, I might say you are one of top-5 sources of my daily inspiration at my work. I particularly liked videos where you talk about your daily routine and about mornings. As an idea, you are always on the go, travelling and meeting peoples. Could you maybe do a short video of how you absorb/sketch/note/explore the Life while travelling? Because somehow I am sure experience you get from all the travels gets into your work, but sometimes things are very intense + overwhelming, so how do you NO forget little things?:) With love to you and all the team of Schoolism. PS: gonna hit cinema to see Alice this weekend, yay!
Another great video, thank you so much! I´m trying to break into comics, and it´s taking a lot of time; but while I´m working on samples for editors, I´ve been working in a personal project, which I plan to transform into a webcomic. It has taken a lot of time to write the complete script, but I´m happy for having accomplish that (all my admiration to writers!), so now it´s time to start drawing it :) I think I will use Tumblr for that, it has a nice interface for webcomics. Thanks for the inspiration! Best from Spain :)
Once again great message, thanks! I am working on my one year daily painting and posting it on RUclips while I develop projects I plan on sharing online when ready. I still have a hard time with instagram, but the other places I am having a good steady growth. I can feel a focus (or style) starting to show trough my stuff and I'm really happy about that. Still have a long way to go tho ahhaha Channels and artists like you are a big inspiration and help me to keep going!!
And I would love to see more art education talk maybe? I teach animation to children and we focus a lot on basic drawing and communication, and sometimes balancing a fun and experimental environment with technique is hard when dealing with kids
Hey WaalkR just checked out your channel! Great stuff! You've got a new subscriber in me. Looking forward to seeing more of your creative videos and how your channel grows and grows! Keep being awesome!
Great video as always, Bobby. I'd love to see a video on how to license my illustrations to license buyers. If there are steps to follow and tips to keep in mind.
I watch all of your videos when I'm down! They put me back in the right head space. I'm currently working on paintings for a show coming up, but it's causing me to neglect my animation. I'm struggling with having too many ideas and which to develop first. I have a concept for a short (and I mean 2 minutes) that is original from top to bottom and a separate idea for a short (also 2 minutes) that's an original spin from existing animation, like a fan film. As a matter of opinion, which would you suggest I follow first; completely original or a something that would be familiar to an existing audience? Thank You SOOOO Much!!
Hi Brystal, There's benefits to both. the fan film will get you more views most likely but an original idea that's successful will be much more helpful for you if you want to be a creative person that comes up with her own IP.
Binge watching all of your videos!:)) What a great inspiration us all... I love the "fear vs logic" advice. Do you have or plan to add traditional figurative sculpture courses and anatomy studies? I could use an advanced course.
Hi Diana, thanks for your lovely comment and watching Bobby's videos. We also appreciate your comment...will definitely bring this up to the team! -Nancy on behalf of Bobby
I like to say I'm a student because I'm very happy that I made it to university, I never thought I would be able to because I got sick in school, but I made it and it's one of the things I'm really proud of. I don't want to keep that to myself. XD
I want to make an animated show about dragons. I know how to draw dragons, I made a few characters that love and I want to develop, but I am afraid that I expose them and my ideas or designs get stolen... what should I do in that case?
If I were in your position, Id realise this is just an excuse my brain is making. It's a legitimate concern, but I mean you are giving it more power/importance than it deserves. It's possible this could happen, but what are the chances? And you can work on a contingency plan while working on the show. A simpler approach is "Deal with the problem when it happens and not overthink about it right now". I would try to convince myself how irrational this thought is and how its not worth delaying something I want. (Im guilty of doing similar things. Using a fear to procrastinate). Well not to lecture you here tbh. Just saying that its just our brain doubting and making up excuses to not do the work. If youre really concerned and still cant get past the fear, then one suggestion I have is: Put out a small (non-revealing) art bit of this show or the characters. For instance, if you have an art account/just any of your social media account, then post a random snapshot style image of 2-3 dragons or whoever your characters are. Make it interesting, and pretty obviously. If people love it, keep them engaged by using these characters as uh webcomics or something? You gotta use your creativity here really. And once you feel you've established an audience, you could turn the "show" into an illustrated book or comic OR if you're hung up on making it into an animated show, then pitch your idea to some animation studio or production house (Im not very well-informed about animation so I apologise for not being helpful there). You gotta be logical and reasonable here. Sometimes 10k people will love the said product but only 2k or 3k will actually buy it. Be aware of your "actual demand" and not just overall hype/admiration you're receiving. Good luck! :)
@@Aqsa792 awwww thank you ❤, this was really helpful. Even if I know how to draw, but I'm not a profesional and I Still have things to learn, should I learn 2D animation?
I just graduated from college and I'm still new to being an artist. I want to be an animator and an illustrator. I enjoy telling stories though image. Right now I'm trying to figure out where to go from here. My skills need some work and I kind of just started this path to become a animator and illustrator. I could use some advice on where I should start.
Thanks for these great videos, Bobby! I still miss your previous longer livestreams, but any video by you is encouraging. One thing: When I clicked to share this video (like you told us in this video), RUclips told me, that the video is unlisted and that I should reconsider sharing it. Another question not related to this video: Weeks ago (on April the 4th this year) you held a RUclips event "ChiuStream - How to get illustration work?" with Lauren Panepinto and artist Marc Scheff. Unfortunately I missed a good chunk of that stream and when I wanted to rewatch it, I wasn't able to do so. Didn't you plan to have it available as a video to rewatch? Whenever I click on it, it says, that that event has ended. I hoped, it would turn up in your video archive, but so far it didn't. It would be awesome, if you'd consider putting that stream up as a video, because it was really informative. I don't know, if RUclips allows me to post the link to this event page. Here it is: ruclips.net/video/dow4FGSTGVk/видео.html&ab_channel=BobbyChiu Thanks for all of your great videos and interviews and livestreams (whenever they happen)!
Hello Bobby Chiu I wanted to ask you question what be the recommended amount of hours should be put into drawing because I try drawing 12-16 hours a day.
Hi my name is haile I am from Ethiopia I like ur tips and motivation. I am student artists and I went to make cartoons movie or game I love them but I am working on basic forms and same painting and drawing what can u advice me ?
how do I deal with society ? I mean I'm seen as a failure with too much dreams . I wanna be the best concept artist I can be , I wanna inspire people in my condition . I have no money for art school, I'm currently stuck in an engineering course which is driving me nuts !. Im too emotional a lot of times it gets in the way .when I am going consistently with my work , something always screws it up , perhaps a month of exams , or family crisis or something :(
Find these videos fascinating having seen your career progress over the years and been a student on one of your schoolism classes. When you are talking about 'Beta Testing Groups', check out the "Lean Start Up" www.amazon.com/Lean-Startup-Entrepreneurs-Continuous-Innovation/dp/0307887898?ie=UTF8&keywords=lean%20startup&qid=1464641596&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1 It is more with a technology focus but think it will put a structure and framework around your thoughts about getting 'feedback' etc.

Thank you so much for the kind words and the subscribe! I'll work hard to make interesting stuff and improve
interesting! I'll keep that topic in mind. Thank you Waalk
+Bobby Chiu thank *you*! :)
Thank you very much for taking the time to respond! This helped a lot. My own IP it is!

Thank you Bobby
you're welcome Sagau
Any advice to draw more accurate? I struggle a lot with hand eye coordination and being really accurate when drawing.
perhaps I'll make that a video in the future. Hard to explain in text.
I love the simplicity of these little characters that you've created in all of your videos. Do you have a name for them?
Hi +Nicholas Nebelsky, they are just little plant people :D ~ R
I like to say I'm a student because I'm very happy that I made it to university,
I never thought I would be able to because I got sick in school,
but I made it and it's one of the things I'm really proud of.
If youre really concerned and still cant get past the fear, then one suggestion I have is:
Put out a small (non-revealing) art bit of this show or the characters.
Hi Lupus, I have quite a few videos that would be helpful. Here's the playlist ruclips.net/p/PLeLw9TDyBUdWJuG8YqgWvW-UcW19_DSFq
Here it is: ruclips.net/video/dow4FGSTGVk/видео.html&ab_channel=BobbyChiu
Thanks for all of your great videos and interviews and livestreams (whenever they happen)!
Ah, I just noticed, that now this video seems to be listed. :)
hopefully I'll be able to carve out some time soon to do a longer stream again. Thank you Dorothee
Thanks man! so inspiring! Good monday fuel
By the way, the link to the morning motivation is wrong. It directs you to the schoolism website
thank you Nacho! I've fixed the link. Thank you for pointing it out to me.
Hello Bobby Chiu
I wanted to ask you question what be the recommended amount of hours should be put into drawing because I try drawing 12-16 hours a day.
I think 12hrs a day is wonderful but I challenge you to only break to stretch and eat... no email, phone calls or social media.

how do I deal with society ? I mean I'm seen as a failure with too much dreams . I wanna be the best concept artist I can be , I wanna inspire people in my condition . I have no money for art school, I'm currently stuck in an engineering course which is driving me nuts !. Im too emotional a lot of times it gets in the way .when I am going consistently with my work , something always screws it up , perhaps a month of exams , or family crisis or something :(

Been trying different things for over 8 years and still nothing stuck lol... keep chucking the mud balls I guess haha
Thanks Matt. I have the book already. I found a lot of useful things in it.
Wat if no one ever sees ur stuff. No matter how accessible u make it or post it
i hope the school is still up for the next next next generation haha
