    Thanks for the review. Some things I would like to see in another video with this case: 1.) Using a picoPSU-160-XT DC/DC for better airflow 2.) Adding 3x 50mm fans (Fractal Design Silent R3) on the side which should improve chipset temps.

    • @TheTechBuyersGuru
      @TheTechBuyersGuru  3 года назад

      The 3x50mm fans are a good idea, specifically for the chipset thermal issue. I also think that some of the other DC board options out there would be preferable, although a bigger AC adapter would also be required.

    I've not seen much online about this case so it's nice to see an in depth review of it!
    I transplanted a system from an ISK110 to the ML10 and am using the L9a-AM4 as well, although I've got a 160w picoPSU instead of the Silverstone one. What I did manage to squeeze in with the extended top was a 140mm Noctua NF-A14 and that mesh has more issues that you'd think... The fan makes a lot of extra noise that seems to be caused by the extra resistance/pattern from the mesh. I installed a fine mesh filter that I had lying around and that has improved things, but I'm still having to run the fan a little slower to keep the noise down.
    The thermals on the 3200g that I've got in the system are good though, after a significant torture test in Cinebench R20 the temps didn't get above 65 on the CPU, and the VRM/SSD temps weren't an issue due to the massively increased airflow from the 140mm fan.
    Overall, I'm pleased with the look and feel of the case, but the issue with the fan noise is disappointing, hopefully you're right and they change the mesh pattern!

    • @TheTechBuyersGuru
      @TheTechBuyersGuru  3 года назад

      That noise you hear is resonance, and it's an issue with ANY mesh when you mount a fan directly to it. That's why I really don't like the setup you are using, even though SilverStone specifically suggested that I test it, and even though it's how the ML09 and some of the Raven cases ship from the factory. A much better solution would be to use a taller cooler that comes close to the top panel, but still has several millimeters of clearance to avoid resonance. I did not test this because ultimately the power supply wasn't sufficient to get me through my benchmarks.
      I would recommend that you remove the stock fan on the NH-L9a, put a stack of washers between the case panel and your 140mm fan, and reattach it with the fan about 5mm away from the panel. The NH-L9a plus the 140mm are 62mm tall, which is why you were able to make this work in a case with 63mm of clearance, but it's not the solution you're looking for. Sometimes less is more!!!

    • @simricard
      @simricard 3 года назад

      @@TheTechBuyersGuru Resonance, got it! If I can get my hands on some low profile ram I'll definitely give removing the fan and using spacer a go, at the moment I've got some trident-z stuff in there that would end up blocking the fan. I'm assuming then that the filter that I've installed is probably spacing it just far enough away from the panel to reduce the noise, but not enough to eliminate it completely.
      When I've got some free time I'm going to try attaching a full thickness NF-A9 fan to the cooler to see if it's better or worse than my current setup. I'd also like to test the low profile case top with the 3 50mm fan slots populated, but since I'd have to buy the fans to do so that one will have to wait!

    • @TheTechBuyersGuru
      @TheTechBuyersGuru  3 года назад

      Ah, yes, that RAM is going to cause issues with clearance. You might be able to squeeze a 120mm fan in using my suggested approach.

    Great video! Would definitely be interesting to see if thermals get any better when using a slim 120/140mm fan as well as the L9a cooler in the taller configuration, I think this case has a lot of potential!

    • @TheTechBuyersGuru
      @TheTechBuyersGuru  3 года назад +1

      That's something SilverStone suggested I test, but honestly, there's really no excuse for it underperforming the Antec so significantly. And if you're going to go with a bigger fan, you might as well go with a bigger cooler. I considered re-testing it with a 60mm-tall cooler with a 120mm slim fan, but decided it just wasn't the right approach, because I still was at the limit of the power supply while using the Ryzen 5 3400G.

    Thanks for the review. I would like to see how this case does with the tall lid on and a 140mm intake fan feeding fresh air to the CPU cooler. Additionally, 3 50mm exhaust fans could really help circulate the heat from the power board. How do you think temps would do with that configuration? How do you think the upcoming Ryzen 5 5600g would do in the aforementioned setup?

    • @TheTechBuyersGuru
      @TheTechBuyersGuru  3 года назад

      Before adding a 140mm case fan, I'd just get a taller CPU heatsink. That's going to be of much greater benefit. This case with the taller lid will fit coolers up to 63mm. Using a 140mm case fan limits you to 38mm, i.e., the 37mm-tall Noctua NH-L9a, which is not ideal. Plus you are then stacking fans next to each other, which is sub-optimal. A better solution would be a great 60m-class cooler, like the ID-Cooling IS-60: amzn.to/3hMI1Le
      Adding 3x50mm fans is of course an option, but that type of fan is quite ineffective from a performance to noise perspective.

    • @milchkopf3881
      @milchkopf3881 Год назад

      @@TheTechBuyersGuru you are wrong, "guru". a 140 or 120 intake would completely change the thermals of this case. a bigger cooler would only help much, if the fan comes a lot closer to the perforated panel and thus, basically acts as an intake fan.

    I was impressed by the detail in your review. I am not an engineer, but I do know electronics, and I intuitively get the issues in airflow and heat dissipation.
    I built a smallish desktop for my wife with an ITX mobo, but now she wants an all-in-one and I was dreaming that maybe I could jam that ITX in an even smaller case...but not this one.
    I'm just shocked by the complete engineering fail with this case!
    First, it sounds like the DC-DC converter throws off a lot of heat but is completely out of any airpath.
    Also, why would they go to the trouble of supporting a SATA drive that would block the airflow?
    And you need to ground the converter under the mobo? How many people will miss that?
    And the 120w not being enough for the 3400G...how much did they test this thing?
    I think with a little more engineering, they could've done much better.
    Maybe it should've just been a package with the right converter and fan.
    Or maybe you could put all the DC circuits in the brick and run a fat custom cable to the PC...if I were an engineer on this, they'd probably fire me, but they should probably fire the engineer that cooked up this box...

    • @TheTechBuyersGuru

      The case I'd recommend is another chassis from In-Win (not the one in the video), which is called the In-Win Chopin: amzn.to/2O3A0q8
      Your wife will be very impressed! It includes a 150W power supply, the SSDs mount behind the motherboard (where they belong), and it looks super-classy.

  • @waveformdistortion
    @waveformdistortion 3 года назад

    I think a lot of the problems you had with this case could be solved pretty easily. Rather than the Silverstone DC board that still isn't available for purchase, you could use a pico PSU and a 12A power brick to hit the 150W number you're looking for. As for thermals, I think you'd see a system-wide improvement if you removed the fan from the Noctua L9a and instead mounted a 15mm thick 120mm or 140mm fan to the case's top panel.

    • @TheTechBuyersGuru
      @TheTechBuyersGuru  3 года назад

      No doubt about the pico PSU, but the 120W model I tested is what SilverStone designed for use with this case, and it's really not ideal for modern high-end CPU/GPU combo chips. Others can feel free to hunt down the right pico PSU, but there could be fitment issues.
      Mounting a fan to the panel would create a lot of noise due to resonance as the air is pulled through. And I'm not convinced that a 120/140mm slim fan would actually provide better CPU temps with a 6mm gap between the fan and heatsink. Would be an interesting experiment though, maybe I'll try it some day. ;)

    • @waveformdistortion
      @waveformdistortion 3 года назад +1

      @@TheTechBuyersGuru I was thinking more along the lines of bringing down overall system temperatures while maintaining adequate temps on the CPU, but you could also try one of the 120x20mm fans from Yate Loon, though I can only find it in the 1300RPM variant. A 1mm gap shouldn't be too hard to overcome.
      As far as the noise goes, I'm not particularly bothered by it, but I can understand how it could be annoying to some.

    • @TheTechBuyersGuru

      I think there's a lot of potential in going with a Flex PSU, especially given that SilverStone has just released a 500W model! - www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=935&bno=24&tb=14&area=en
      But at 81mm wide, it's going to be too big to fit in even the extended version of the ML10. Laying it on its side (making it just 40mm tall) would require the case to be a lot longer, and I don't think that's the right approach. I've love to see a bigger version of the ML10 using a Flex PSU mount at the top, and a dual-slot, half-height GPU mount at the bottom. That could be the ultimate mini gaming PC, a shrunken version of the ML09, which I already like a lot. That would bring it under 6 liters - very cool indeed!

I am looking at building a system with the same motherboard and 3400G CPU with the same Noctua CPU cooler, M.2 SSD, powered by a PicoPSU 150W kit. I was looking at the ML10 but if it has bad airflow then that's not an option. From the video, the Antec had the best thermal performance of the three with the 3400G so why do you recommend against it? The InWin case got hotter, so it seems like that's the one you shouldn't put the hot CPU in. Is it because you were using the Antec 90W power supply that's optional with that case?

    • @TheTechBuyersGuru

      "Is it because you were using the Antec 90W power supply that's optional with that case?"
      The 90W PSU isn't optional, it comes with case, and it would shut off instantly if running a 3400G. I even had a crash with a 120W adapter when benching 3DMark. Insufficient power will cause crashes far faster than high temps.
      If you are willing to go down the road of a 150W Pico PSU, which requires diligence to get a quality product and matching adapter, then the Antec is fine. Hard to build in though.

    I can see Silverstone's old reason making sense
    it has always been a small market, and there's lots of similar cases from the Chinese OEMs at far lower price
    plus the AsRock Deskmini is the obvious choice for building a new system
    ML10 is basically a ML06 with the SFX PSU and single slot half height PCI-E removed, imho it's really lazy engineering from Silverstone
    I own a ML06 and honestly the thermal performance is acceptable thanks to the 2 80mm intake fans, thus I was not relly expecting much when I see the interior of ML10

      The DeskMini is a very interesting choice but it's based on the abandoned STX form factor. SilverStone actually helped pioneer that with its VT02 case, which I reviewed years ago and still use to this day, and I'd say that the ML10 is as close a copy of that case as any other case on the market. In fact, it's incredible that the ML10 is about the same size as the DeskMini. It offers far more options in terms of motherboards and RAM. The ML06 is really in a different class, being 7 liters versus 3.7 liters for the ML10 in its extended configuration, 2.8 liters in the short setup. I've tested the ML09 and absolutely love it, frankly it makes it hard to recommend the ML10, but it is significantly larger. The difference is not subtle. Why can't they make the case wider so that a normal height cooler could fit? Why build something so small that conventional parts won't fit? Since this case isn't intended for gaming, why not just buy a laptop?

    Too small I think for i7-10700 as 120W external PSU is too weak for that setup.

      I agree that this would be borderline too much for a 120W power supply. Unlike the Ryzen APU I tested, the issue is not the graphics chip, but the CPU cores themselves. A 10700 probably draws about 100W at load (and that is of course at stock, because it cannot be overclocked).
