At 18, and before my first deployment, I found out that I was going to have a daughter. And the one thing that kept getting me through each deployment, was the thought of getting home and being reunited with her. And as she started growing older, the only way that her Mother could get her to sleep at times was with an item of my clothing that smelt of me. (My daughter and myself have always had a very close bond and I actually ended up leaving the forces so that I could be in her life more.)
