Eating Guinea Pigs in the Andes Mountains regions of South America is a long and special tradition. They’ve been raised and eaten for thousands of years, and to this day, they remain very popular, and reserved for special meals. The city of Cusco, Peru, and the surrounding areas is one of the best places in Peru to eat guinea pig, known locally as cuy. #Cusco #Peru #PeruvianFood
In this Peruvian cuy tour, we ate three different guinea pigs in a row:
1. San Pedro Market - Right in the heart of Cusco is San Pedro Market, a wonderful Peruvian food market with everything you can imagine. In the morning you’ll find quite a few vendors selling to-go guinea pigs. We had this first, but it wasn’t the best of the day.
2. Tipón, Peru - For our guinea pig number two we drove to Tipón, a town that claims to be a “National Capital of Delicious Baked Guinea Pig.” We headed straight for Cuyeria Monica, where she baked a fresh cuy, bubbled the skin, and served us the full cuy Peruvian food plates. Fresh out of the oven, with the crispy skin, it was incredibly delicious. 35 PEN ($10.61) - Price per cuy
3. Cuyeria Sol Moqueguano - Back to the center of Cusco, we tried a famous restaurant for cuy, Cuyeria Sol Moqueguano, where they have both baked and deep fried. This was an incredible meal, the deep fried version was sensational. The entire plate, including the sausage and rocoto relleno, was outstanding. 42 PEN ($12.73) - Per per cuy
It was a fantastic Peruvian food day in Cusco, and a learning experience.

PandemoniumMeltDown I’ve been in Peru twice in my lifetime and let me tell you my friend... It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I’m Trilingual (fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese), so I was able to enjoy myself freely without having to depend on a interpreter. They’re so lovely and humble. As a tourist, I have to say they really treated me like family.
I personally find it hilarious that there are some people who literally subscribe to Mark's channel just so they can dislike his newly uploaded videos first. How sad for them that they start off their day wanting to be negative and hateful. Oh well, I arrive early so I can enjoy and feel blessed by Mark's amazing food adventures. Salute!

well, they are not rats they are guinea pigs and not all of us eat it. People eat and raise guinea pigs for two reasons, one is because of their culture and the other is because the meat of that is healthy and rich.

I went to Cusco a 4 years ago. Such a great place. I was on tour and we also bought Cuy. For me it reminded me of roasted pig. We pooled together for 2. It's not for everyone and it is definitely a delicacy. I'm loving your Peruvian series. Thank you!

Sea halibut Chilean sea bass. Pero comen frijoles y chiles Serrano's hironias de la vida . Scallops . almejas. Ostiones.

I went there to eat cuy last week. That was one of my Bucket list items. I specifically when a search for that lady. I told her I saw the you tube video, and she was very happy. There are many other restaurants in the area, but this was my second time eating cuy and it was delicious

@@janevanskike2101 usually cookbooks are based on the Creole and Coastal cuisine of Lima. Cuy is consumed more in the Andean region of Peru. Also cookbooks tend to be consumer friendly and not everyone wants to try food some might consider pets.
John Perez I loved my cookbook. It has so many wonderful recipes. I like to watch these shows and then try to find recipes on the internet for some of the wonderful food. But each country is different and that’s ok. In China they don’t waste not one part of the chicken when they eat it. Every culture is beautiful to me!

Cuy is Not a " regular Guinea pig" it's totally different , it's 15 to 20 times bigger than a "regular Guinea pig". It was domesticated by ancient cultures 1000 years before steak and chicken came to America. Naturally manipulated (mixed) to get stronger samples by the Agronomic Engineering and Zootechnic Faculty of Peruvian Universities with the highest standards of quality, getting as result, a fine, healthy meat higher in protein and lowest cholesterol, much better than steak or chicken.

I totally respect the culture and believe Peruvians are an amazing people, with many delicious foods to offer. However, I don't care what you say, I'm not eating that. It could be part GP, part chicken and part cow. I don't want it. Mark has a strong stomach, gag reflex and much more openness than I ever will. I'd hate to be rude, but the way my mind and stomach is set up, I'd vomit that right back up, at the first taste. I've tried squirrel and rabbit and it was not nasty, but once they hit my throat, I can't swallow the lump. Ak, no thanks.

I just got back from Peru. I always eat a cuy in Peru. My aunt cooks it perfectly.
