Sono partito che ero ancora giovane
con i pantaloni fin sotto i piedi (più lunghi della mia taglia)
sono partito con una mela in tasca
e sul bastone un fagottino a quadretti.
Con la pioggia e la nebbia che sta salendo
scarpe rotte ma bisogna andare
ma in collina la terra è bassa
meglio andarsene in giro che andare a lavorare.
Oh buongiorno mia bella signora,
occasionalmente passavo da qui
ho bisogno di un bicchiere di barbera
una sòma d'aj (pane e aglio) che si lasci mangiare.
Oh signore, si sieda pure
proprio lì sotto quel mandorlo
i miei bambini sono già pronti ad ascoltarla
mentre mangia si metta a raccontare.
Poi la sera si radunano nella stalla
Sulla paglia con le bestie vicino
Tutti insieme facciamo teatro
Lasciamo andare via fastidi e preoccupazioni.
Tante cascine tante famiglie
tante le storie, canzoni e sonetti
alcune fanno piangere, altre fanno ridere
sono tutte quante nel mio fazzoletto.
Tutti dicono che sono una lingera (1),
ma a modo mio lavoro anch'io.

I was still young when I left,
my pants hanging below my feet (too long for me)
I took off with an apple in my pocket
and a stick holding a checkerboarded bundle
As the rain falls and the fog is rising

Up on the hills the land is too low,
far better wandering than working

and a "soma d'aj" (traditional warm bread and garlic) that I can eat

All together we make a play
Getting rid of all the hassles and worries.
Many farms, many families
many stories, songs and sonnets
some of them will make you cry, some others will make you laugh
all of them are in my handkerchief.
Everyone says I'm a Lingera (1),
but in my own way I work too.
