- Manufacturing has begun of the first coin to enter general circulation in the UK carrying the image of King Charles.
The 50p coin has started to be struck at The Royal Mint in Llantrisant, Wales, and will enter tills, wallets and purses in December.
Sculptor Martin Jennings, who created the portrait of the King, said that witnessing the coin being produced was a "quite remarkable experience".

It is so sad to see Elizabeth’s image to be replaced by that of Charles
She tried to live forever,sorry!
It's sad, but it's also traditional, the coins carry the image of the monarch and that is King Charles.
Elizabeth's coins will continue to circulate for decades though, as long as they're still in good condition they're still usable, unless they decide to make any drastic design changes like they did with the £1 coin but I doubt they'll do anything to the lower denomination coins apart from consider getting rid of 1p and 2p coins altogether.

I’m not from the UK, so forgive me if I’m wrong, but had this been done before? I thought they typically waited until the next full year to start minting coins of the new Monarch on them out of respect for the previous Monarch and to give some time for the mint to prepare the production of the new design, hence why there weren’t any coins featuring Edward VIII. I’m not upset or anything, just curious.
From what I understand is that these coins wont be released until next year, they are just striking them ready for release because there are a few sets of 50p coins that are still waiting to be released into circulation that still have Queen Elizabeth II on them like the Harry Potter and BBC centenary 50p coins.
yeah they're making this as a special commemorative, but the definitive designs wont start circulating until next year

Good thing they don't include the ears. Otherwise they would be the first and only coins which feature a handle.
Amazing that the Royal Mint was making coins way back for Alfred the great but I wonder if they'll be making them for King William as Britain might be entirely cashless by the time King Charles dies ?
Bullion coins will still be made though.

Quite possible, but I hope not. All digital virtual currency will allow the banks and the nation-state to hold considerably more power over an individual and their finances.

Thank god they are not getting rid of The Queen coins. This all happening very fast. That would have been a bit of a shock all the note abd coins just gone
Nah coins featuring previous deceased Monarchs have always remained in circulation for many decades afterwards. The only reason coins featuring Monarchs prior to the Queen are no longer around is because the country changed from imperial currency to decimal currency in 1971. So sadly all the old imperial coins featuring numerous past monarchs had to be withdrawn from circulation. Shame that, there were still a small number of coins featuring Queen Victoria still circulation in 1971, 70 years after she died.
They would have a bit of a task replacing 27 billion coins that has taken 51 years to mint that amount if they were to replace the Queen's head on coinage. And why would that be required anyway? The USA and other countries doesn't remove old style coins in circulation.
Coins just won't be the same.

@@stevenc.6502 oh okay
There would've been coins in circulation with Victoria, Edward VII and George V on them as late as 1971, and King George VI up to 1992. The only reason that all current coins have Queen Elizabeth II on them is that all coin denominations changed during her reign, mostly because of decimalisation.
