- Commonly known as "polka dot plant", I like to call Hypoestes phyllostachya "confetti plant" because it looks like confetti, especially when seen from far away. It can come in a variety of shades and leaf shapes, making it pretty for some pops of color in the home. But make note: these plants can get really unkempt, so it's advised to prune them to keep their cute shape.
In this video I'll discuss where it is originally native to, where I'm growing it in my home, and basics like light, watering and fertilizing.

Mine just pushed out some blooms....I didnt even know it blooms. Such a pleasant surprise.
I bought 2 of these (for $2) both on their death beds at Whole Foods lol . Repotted and nursed then back to life. I now have them in 3 separate pots and they are doing fabulous. At first they grew in long and tall so I cut it down. They are now growing in bushy and still have their pink colors 😍. I do keep them on my windowsill and they get a lot of sunlight. Water about once a week(a nice deep watering) and Trim when necessary. Recently fertilized them after having them for about 4 months being as it’s now spring. They are lovely and simple(at least for me) plants❤️❤️
The Veronica ASMR Show you’ve given me hope! Mine is crazy leggy at the moment in spite of lots of good light, so I will try giving them a “haircut” and doing some propagation. Even if my experiment fails, at least they weren’t expensive. Live and learn I guess!
Katie Howard oh definitely cut the leggy portions out. When I first got them and repotted they were growing fast but tall and leggy. After I pruned them they started growing in better and no more legginess! I haven’t been able to successfully propagate them though lol . Best of luck
The Veronica ASMR Show i was able to propagate simply by taking one of the clippings and putting it into some water (try to keep the leaves out of the water though)! Keep it topped off and change when needed. It began to form roots between 2-3 weeks
Did you propagate in water or soil?
I've been meaning to try this plant again. It was my very first plant as a little kid and I was so devastated when it died. Hopefully now that im older and have more plant experience I can keep it happy.
That is a really really cool planter. The polka dot plant sets it off and the planter sets the plant off! I'm loving it!
Nic information
hi Summer, I have this plant and he is loving it a foot and half away from my dining room SE window. I love this plant.
Finally! A plant I have! Mine are doing great in open top terrarium cuz they love humidity. Cheers all!
I am trying to get this to come back after a bit of a dying off. It produces a flower spike. Pretty insignificant but pretty nonetheless. Thanks for highlighting her, Summer!
I went polka dot crazy last year.... Never again, I struggled with this plant so much. She is right about how they get so damn leggy. 🦵 I love me some Fittonia tho!
Does them being leggy just mean like bare branches? Usually we like our plants to grow!
I have one that has red, white, and pink all growing together in one pot. Its in a high light area, with my more tropical plants. I've had it for close to 2 years. It does get leggy, but I like it. It's definitely a plant that will let you know its thirsty! But once you water it, it will spring back up! Love this plant!
I always forget to water mine and it droops but then perks right back up with a thorough watering. Love it
Yea, they're a bit of a drama queen. They all-out faint and act like you've killed them, if you forget to water them. Then water and they are as happy as can be! Lol
The „leaf spike“ are the spikes that grow right before it blooms. Weird that it wasn’t mentioned but they get small purple flowers. After they bloom they do go dormant though so be sure to remove the spikes before they bloom to prolong their life span
a plant that when i first got, i loved it a lot... however once it gets leggy it looks like the ugliest thing that ever graced earth xD
its easy to keep alive at least for me, but it gets leggy quite easy... also i recommend keeping these in nursery pots as they do best in them watering wise.
Got o e of these and it is blooming little purple flowers, so beautiful
I have become a huge fan of yours. I love plants too. Hopefully my store can look like your house
I just can’t get this plant to be happy.
Me either I had a big one and it totally dried out but now i have new leaves thankfully
Mine hated me for so long until I gave it a cover, like a terrarium to get it to be happy. I basically put the clear part of a fish tank over top like a cloche to lock in the humidity. It’s doing great now!
@@Nicole-xr4bn same idea I'm going to try. have a tiny tank from my bettas first house. I will see what happens. one minute it was fine, next it looks like it was murdered
Could it be be named that due to the flower “spike “ it produces?
I honestly don't know what I'm doing that's making it thrive. It's at least two feet tall rn. I just try to keep the soil moist (it's a drama queen, so it'll droop as soon as it needs water), and keep it by a window sill, but my coffee maker is behind it, so it doesn't get hit directly by light 🤷🏼♂️ now it's time to propagate this bad gurl
It's nice to have one to have to trim and fuss around with... 😊 I let mine get tall and the new shoots below are starting to come up. It's an experiment but I am trimming and propagating now. It's kinda like Bonsai but with quicker satisfying growth. Thank you.
I love this plant, but every time I get one I cannot keep it happy, so I stopped buying it. I love the pink color, and I am not surprised that you can grow it Summer. I might try growing this again, just because I love it so much. See you again soon.
woooooooooooooooow shes like mine too so loving it
I got this plant @dollar store. It grew into a tall leggy plant so I cut it all the back and just leave an inch stem. Repot it and water, put in bright light. They can take morning sun. Now its putting out leaves again. 🤗
Oh i got excited to see this one! I got some a few months ago that have been tricky. I've noticed that mine are fairly sensitive to white fungus, compared to most my other plants. Thanks for sharing!
Would you recommend rooting cuttings in water?
Pretty in pink :)
Beautiful plant ...mine lasting about 3 yrs then it disappeared in the Texas winter...that you for sharing🙏🏼🙏🏼😇😇😷😷
Oh dear, I bought 2 plants & thought they were for the outdoors, which I potted yesterday and have on my deck. It didn’t come with a care tag. Today I’m moving it inside with my violet plant. Thanks!
I got this one :) Now I feel like going to trim it a little.
I love mine! ❤
The pickiest of all my plants, but I'll try covering & misting.
P
My mom called this plant Pink Splash
I bought four of these for my outside planters, not realizing they were also common houseplants! 🤦♀️ They're growing like weeds outside. So, this fall when I tear the planters apart, I'm going to bring these inside.
Beautiful plant stay connected
Thank you! I learn a lot! Mine came with white, pink and red..
I just bought mine hope it lives
Lol not long ago i walked past a store and bought this plant cuz why not and i read about it a little and it mentioned cutting it but i was skeptical cuz cutting a plant sounds risky (i guess?) So i let it grow and i was happy it was growing but it turned so long and wacky and without many leaves lol but now Im sure i can cut it and let it grow bushy and pretty 💖
They make me very sad. I put them at a bright spot and the leaves turn crispy. I moved them to a less bright spot from the window sill and the leaves got worst as well as leggy. I mist them and that made it even worst. I refuse to give up on them. Now instead of have flushed lively plants i have two pots with four stalks each and some tiny leaves begging me to putt them out of their misery. I even started talking to them and asking them to tell me how to help them. I watch a million different videos on how to care for them. People have different ideas that work for them but nothing works for me 😡
hahaha i've been doing the same! this plant is sooooo mooooody
😃

Today i bought my second one, i intend in keeping it alive. Same thing happened with my first one
Lol. Thank you so much and i also subscribed to her. I actually did watch that video too but I done. Will not let the poor plant suffer
I hope you don’t mind constructive criticism. I found the video a bit too obvious, like you were trying to fill the time with observations that anyone seeing the plant could make. I would like to get more recommendations about how to care for the plant from your personal experience, not so much the general facts you can get by googling it.
This is my favourite plant
You mentioned propagating but didnt’ give any kind of information on how to successfully do it? Mine is getting very tall I’d like to propagate and make it a little bushier before it starts getting “leggy”
I’m actually water propagating. I cut about two inches of a branch and took off the leaves off the bottom 1-2 nodes. Then I stuck it water and change the water every week. It’s been about 2 weeks and my cutting are forming roots.
Mine started dying when I had it in a brightly lit bathroom. Coming back to life right in front of a window.
same here I have mine in the bathroom where I have a sky light. today it started looking very sad ,so thanks for the tip I will put in a window.
I feel like perhaps I hear the slightest of stank in your voice when talking about this plant. I love my polka dot plant. It's a happy and funny and joyful plant when you spend some time to figure out what it wants. I'm surprised there's no mention of how this plant faints. It dramatically and immediately returns to full attention after watering. It's actually a wonderful, easy and reliable way to gauge how to water this little guy.
Also pay close attention to it's leaves. If they get crusty on the edges (which you can just pinch away) you're probably giving it too much sun or water. My polkadot tends to thrive on a light / medium once a week watering.
The polkadot does in fact get a little leggy if not pruned, but if the plant is healthy and tended to it can look incredible when permitted to grow out a bit. That's initially why I came here today, to see if i could find more info about letting this little guy continue to grow out and if I might inadvertently be doing any harm. But I suppose I'll just let it do it's thing,
The hypoesetes definitely needs a keen eye but it really is a fun and happy and responsive plant thats way more than a pretty face if you take the time to get to know it.
Mine fainted as well. I thought it liked the light I was giving it with its adopted brother (another pink beauty I got at the grower when I bought it). Well, I was wrong. Poor thing fainted. I gave it water and put it in a darker corner and it sprung back to life no problem. Now one of the leaves is turning yellow. Its just been a week since I got it. I'm trying to figure out what it needs and why.
We call it the pissed off plant cause it gets pissed off if you don't water it when it wants you to...
I let mine get leggy and I don't realize I should be pruning it on top of when I bought it it was super root bound coming out the bottom of the planter
I have green white, green pink & green red.
They keep popping flowers, should I keep removing it so the growth focus on the leaves & stem?
Thank you for this video! Love polka dot plants so much, I have a white and green one atm and they are pretty happy, but I've noticed that some of their leaves have started to get brown tips. I'm worried about whether this is because I'm not watering them enough, if they're in too much sunlight, or if it's something to do with their planter pot they're in rn. Have any thoughts?
I thought I was going to kill this but I didn’t. I got it in the fall and in the winter it got ugly, lanky and lost it’s color and bottom leaves so I didn’t want to prune it. Now it’s colorful again and growing minis on the bottom of the stems but still leggy. I grow it in a west facing window in a bathroom, in a non porous pot. I want to try getting a red one now or a tiny terrarium one! So if people think they are killing it because it turns into an ugly duckling, don’t give up because I think it goes through cycles and I didn’t change anything to make it better.
Would you say that the brighter pink coloration was in a sunnier or less sunny spot? I am a pink fanatic and want to encourage my polka dot plants to have more color to the leaves than just green!
Oh, I was so bummed when I checked on my new plant after a super hot day, 106 degrees F. It was so wilted and sad. I watered it right away and within 20 min it perked back up. Yea!
I really needed this video! This is the second plant i killed 😿 I let it grow out and it got thin. And i think I under watered maybe. It kind of just withered away until it was just twigs 😪
I saw them in the garden centre and want it but not sure how to take care of it
I want to plant it out in my gardens but idk if it's a perennial or annual in a warm zone 10 ??
Your's looks great though!
My polka dot plant is about two years ild and VERY leggy. What’s the best way to get it back into a reasonable shape without cutting so much off at once that I kill it?
Noticed mine has spider mites, what should I do to get rid of it?
my polka dot plant is looking so rough, it was doing so well in the summer but now the leaves are getting crispy and there aren't as many dots :(
Some of my leaves turned brown and are curling, I keep it indoor and take it outside in the morning. Not sure what’s going on with it. It doesn’t like the window and it doesn’t like the desk ):
I have one in red, red freckles, which I endearingly refer to as Fred Wreckless because of the shock of color. Still trying to find the right light balance though.
This is my favourite plant & I have two. Love you darling and god bless you 🌱🌱💐💐😘😘🥰🥰😍😍❤️❤️❤️ Stay home 🏠 Stay Safe & Stay Healthy.🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱
How many plants are in each of your pots there? I'm wondering how many l should put in mine, which is slightly bigger
Does this plant like to be pot bound or likes lots of room in a pot? I’m new to this poka dot plant. Thanks!
Have these in my garden, but it’s winter will they grow back in spring?
Help. Mine is growing really long stems with a few leafs on them!!! Not bushy at all. What's gone wrong?
I love this plant! I have three.😍
I have two kinds of those dot plants, but they are not growing and loosing their colour , do you have any suggestions for me?
For the polka dot hypoestes plant.....what plant group does it belong to? I have pothos and few others but just now acquired my first tiny pink polka dot plant......very small and is getting window sun but how much sun does it need.
I confused my one for a tiny Chinese evergreen wishes. Does anyone know if they are of a similar family?
Is it necessary to soak stem in water to form roots for propogation for polka dot plants
My new leaves on the top are crinkled on the edges. What is that?
😪help...I bought it light pink n pretty with green now 5 months later its dark purple and green..? why?? i cant find anything online or youtube on how to keep it light pink .
That looks so nice. I will propagate and put it in an empty silver pot.
I don't understand why everybody calls these plants so evil lol. I just keep mine constantly moist and chop leggy stems and she's been just fine!
I have mine under a grow light to keep it happy. Seems to be a challenge to grow for me.
Never had luck with these
I got this from produce in secane near Philadelphia PA
Really? I have one growing on my back porch and it's taking off
I just got a eucalyptus plant today!! Can you please do a video on Eucalyptus keeping?(if you haven't already)
You have got beautiful plant collection, I also have this plant, can I keep it indoor with low light? By the way looking nice in full dress.
I dont understand what the ideal light is... what is meant by "moderate shade to medium conditions"?
Just bought one at Walmart for 3 bucks and reading all these negative comments has me nervous. Hope it doesn’t die on me lol
Got mine few days ago from Meijer for 4$, was thinking the same reading the comments lol think I might have to cover it with a zip lock bag or something
Gorgeous I have one and she like so much humidity conditions and low light just bright in the morning I give a love and water spray on the leafs it’s ok ✅ I thinck this plant 🌱 can be great in a terrarium not mine sorry for my little English lol 😝
That is the CUTEST. 👏 PLANTER. 👏EVER. Where did you find it?
I have one of these it's like three feet tall!
How old is it?
Me too! What do you attach to it for it to grow upwards or does it stand alone ?
@@scOrpiO199792582 does it not look bad? I pinch mine back every week but didnr think its gst that big. It looks rather ugly and leggy when it grows tall
I have this one and it’s white one, they’re both struggling. I have done everything to safe it but it’s giving up. I changed the potting mixes, to soil, watered moderately and carefully. Put it indoors in the bright light region of my room, changed the location multiple times and yet, it’s dying.
They don’t light bright locations
I propagate this plant by sticking tip cuttings directly in moist cactus soil, but some cuttings if they are a little longer don't take very well. Do you think water propagating would work better and be easier on them?
Never tried your method with these, but Ive got some in water right now and none of them seem to have any issues so far. I took the cuttings the same day this was posted, haven't seen any stress on them, yet! Finally noticed roots developing yesterday
Can you grow this plant with hydroponics? Or in rocks or Lecca?
How do you get the color to come out? Mine just have little dots of color and not as pretty as yours :(
i think it varies with each individual
Well my pink hypoestes turned green (joining the bananas in the sw window)
My polka dot plant is very leggy. Why is this happening?
Hi, why my pink polka dot plant losing pink color ?
How can I propagate this plant?
I've taken a few 4 - 5 inch stem cuttings the same day this was posted and started rooting them in water. I just noticed tiny roots developing yesterday (about a week.) To help keep the leaves hydrated you can use a dome or something to go over the cuttings while the roots develop, since they have none yet and that's how the plant uptakes water. Although this may not be necessary if your environment isn't terribly dry. Hope this helps in some way.

I have mine in a pot..its getti g afternoon direct sun for an hour but im thinking about moving it under my bush... Ill figure it out😮
I have some growing wild in full sun... it has become a “weed” lol
Has it kept it's color? Does it look good and healthy? I'm growing mine out and tending to it as it grows. I'm really happy with it but just wanted to make sure that growing it out won't do it any harm.
My polka dot plant is almost dying bc it has 6 roots left
I just got one but die a few months ago. It just dies over a night. T_T
I had this plant and it was doing well. Then I went on vacation for 3 days and it died😢
I’ve bought two and killed two of these :(
I've got 2 of 4 left =/
I can't keep mine happy.
#prayers for Plantastica💚
Little bit more count: 10😆
I think I'm the only one that likes it leggy lol
Are these also called "pink lady" plants?
When it grows up the color gets fade away, I got this from Farmers market, tips please
Saranya Sampath mine faded and died back with less light. The pink is coming back with brighter light.
Why does everyone ask questions when you get no answer back? Maybe we need to see if we can help answer these questions by others in the room.... That would probably help🦋
The flowers appear on a spike

Mine grew super tall and got flowers
I think I grew those outside... is their flower purple...
