- Short clip of early 60s Gibson GA-5 Skylark and a 1958 Fender Champ. The Skylark is the first lead and then the Champ is the second lead. Fuzz tone is created by the amps themselves, no pedals. Reverb is from the recording unit. Bill Littleford - telecaster guitar

Just goes to show; a good guitarist sounds good playing through anything.
PS. They're both excellent little tone boxes when the volume/gain settings are dialled in to the guitar.
Yes. The dynamics are great on these amps.
Truer words have never been spoken...
Telecaster into fender champ is not anything. It is more like everything you will ever need :D
It's a mystery to me how some people can hear the music and know exactly what to play and when to play.
That's some mighty fine Pickin you got going on there. Your channels was the Bright Spot of my day keep up the good picking and God bless.
Sorry for the lateness in my response, I was traveling and was without internet. Thanks for the compliments. I’m glad the video made your day! take care.
@@bltfan1976I totally understand. thank you for your reply:)
That was some incredible playing, sir
Thanks!
Lovely playing, great demo...I hope to pick up a ‘59 GA-5 Skylark over the weekend, here’s hoping! Keep on pickin’!
Thanks man! Good luck getting that Skylark. I hope it all works out!
Perfect !!!! This IS the Real sound !!!
Thanks!
champ sounds killer ! Great playing
Thanks!
Excellent playing. So tasteful. The tones are great, both amps sound so great. I like the little extra bite from the Champ
Thanks man! Yeah the Champ has a little extra in it.
@@bltfan1976 do both have the original speakers?
@@tom.mihalis The Champ has it's original speaker as far I know. It's an old Oxford that I've been told is what they came with. I have the original speaker for the skylark but what you hear in the video is a newer ceramic weber. That probably explains some of the difference.
@@bltfan1976 oh yea that makes sense. Those smaller Webers don't have the same oomph. I have an old Harmony amp with a 6" speaker. I swapped the original Jensen for a 6" ceramic Weber and didn't like it as much
@@tom.mihalis Yeah, I've had mixed results with weber. I have an alnico 10 in another amp and it sounds like an old jensen but with more bottom end. And then I have a few weber 12s that just don't seem to do it no matter how much I break them in.
Great playing! Super tasty...sounded really good with the Skylark, but DAMN! You see why Fender crushed Gibson back in the 50’s, as far as amps. That Champ really has some magic pixie dust?
Thanks! I've found this champ to have a lot of richness and depth. It's a pleasure to play through it and record.
I love that sound, I play the Epiphone equivalent Pacemaker from '66. My favorite
Cool man. Yes, there seems to be an Epiphone version of most Gibson amps from this period. I assume they sound just like or close to their Gibson counterparts. I'll have to play through one if I come across one.
Since your Skylark has a rear-mounted, upward facing control panel, I'm guessing it has a single 6V6 output tube, like the tweed Champ does? There are at least 3 versions of the Skylark that I am aware of: IIRC, the single ended 6V6 version, a version with a pair of 6AQ5 output tubes in push-pull, and another version with a single EL84/6BQ5.
Yes, you're correct, the skylark is the single-ended version with the same tubes as the the champ: 12ax7, 6v6 and 5y3.
Champ is just perfect !
Yep!
Boo ya!!! Loved it!!!🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Thanks!
Recently got my hand on Epiphone Valve Junior (basically Chinese made Skylar). Man what a great surprise that was. Considering finding vintage Champ style amp.
Yes, I remember those. They sounded good. a friend of mine played through one. There's lots of vintage champ style amps to choose from that were made by gretsch, rickenbacker and other brands. Or you can buy a clone.
@@bltfan1976 building a clone is not a bad idea. The circuit is super simple with minimum components inside. I might check some local builders.
Fantastic. Again.. what A/B is supposed to mean. I presume a looper on the backing track.
Thanks again. Instead of using a looper I recorded a separate rhythm track to solo over. Sometimes loopers don't have the clarity I'm looking for. At least the looper I own, which I bought almost 20 years ago.
Great thanks
Thanks man
The sound of the champ is the best I heard so far please tell me what speaker is in it ?
It's the original Oxford speaker.
Great playing!!! Is the champ the main picture and the Gibson in the window?
Thanks! No the window is the gibson lead and then the window disappears and it goes to the champ lead around the 1:00 mark. You can see the champ in the right corner of the shot.
Great playing! Are you using a pedal? My tweed champ isn’t nearly that bright.
Thanks! No pedals. The reverb you hear is from the recording unit. I didn't add any eq to the recording. The brightness might be from that tele I'm using which can be real bright with other amps. Or the microphone is just picking up the higher frequencies better. This digital online universe I notice tends to make everything sound brighter.
That’s some tasty pickin
Thanks!
Tweed amps are probably the best guitar amps!
Yeah man!
Nice, Bill. Thanks. Does your Skylark give you any humm or buzz? Mine does, but then again, I use pedals. Not sure what to do and there is just SO MANY videos and opinions about how to rectify this.
When I plug directly in, the Skylark is pretty quiet (not a lot of hum) but when I've used pedals there is a louder hum. I haven't investigated how to rectify that situation since I don't use a lot of pedals. But now that you mention it, I wonder why that happens.
Susy, on the Skylark and many other vintage practice amps they're missing a 1M resistor from the input to ground. When you dont use pedals its not that big a deal but most amps benefit from having that in there. Next, old carbon composition resistors degrade and will introduce noise. The input resistors should be replaced and this will take care of noise that gets worse when you drive more signal. If the amp has been properly upgraded to a three prong cord and the death cap removed, you may be benefited by creating whats called an "artificial center tap" to get the noise out of the heaters. You take one 100ohm 1/4watt resistor off each leg of the indicator bulb and take it to ground.
@@billedwards2657 Thanks, Bill! Now that I think of it, I've only had a tech go over the amp once, when I bought it. He (curiously) did not ask for the guitar I play through nor my pedal board (not even sure if I had one back then). I bring the entire rig with me next time, along with your explanation, and see what happens.
@@gumball3049 of course! If none of that work has been done to it (all original etc) I would strongly recommend converting it to three prong cord and getting rid of the death cap, and then make a consideration about how much of an annoyance the noise really is vs keeping everything stock and preserving the $$$ value
@@billedwards2657 the 3-prong grounded cord mod was done before i owned it. so i'm good in that regard.
thanks
No problem.
By 'eck, that was nice, as we say on this side of the water.
Cool, I'll have to remember that saying! Thanks for watching the videos and your compliments.
hey man i wanna ask how much did u crank each amp? is it on 10 or less? thinking of getting a custom made champ myself! thanks
I didn't crank them all the way. The Skylark distorts faster so it was probably on 4. The Champ stays cleaner longer so it was on 9 (which is out of 12 on the old fenders) so it's more like a 7. Or 3/4 the way up. But these are just my amps with a tele. Different guitars will distort faster. Humbuckers distort real fast. And other amps with the same name/design will be different as well. Hope that helps with your decision! Good luck with your set-up and your decision to get a custom made champ.
@@bltfan1976 i just so happen to play a telecaster model guitar made by Nash Guitars so this video really helps me a lot! was torn between the 2 amps and even a vox ac4 but ive made up my mind now. great vid man thanks a lot!
@@alvintan2588 No problem! Thanks, I'm glad the video helped out!
Champ sounded more full and round tone from my ears.
...same here............
Any mods done to your ga-5 to take out bright sound?
No mods. It's the original circuit.
@@bltfan1976 what circuit is this- the straight up GA-5 with 12AX7 , 6V6 and 5Y3?
@@deeem-tee799 Yes, that's the circuit.
I recommend a speaker upgrade. I know people love vintage Jensens, but both my old blonde Gibsons were completely transformed by installing Weber alnicos.
this man is very twangy
Yeah man, it does get to that tele country/rock place.
