- Shawali Sherali, a father of two with a third baby on the way, had come to North Texas after fleeing the Taliban. Police say he was shot from behind multiple times by 35-year-old Michael Walker after he picked him up for a ride.

I do Instacart and was considering Lyft and Uber a few months ago but came to the conclusion
that I'd never trust a stranger behind me while I'm driving.

It’s already unfortunate most migrants that work at gas stations, corner stores, smoke shops, etc, are at risk of getting deleted by pookies and ray rays, but now they’re at risk while driving for uber/lyft too!

Uber and Lyft should be held accountable for such incidents because they refuse to do background checks on their riders regularly like they do with drivers and allowing such criminals to take advantage of their platform endangering the lives of drivers. This is not the first incident where an innocent driver lost his life. It’s like one every month now. It’s getting out of hand and we need to hold the platform providers accountable and responsible.
I agree. Not sure how they'd enforce it, though. Email addresses are easy to come up with, and criminals always have new phone numbers. You just buy a cheap burner with cash at the cell phone store and you can buy the prepaid cards for data/minutes. Criminals like this send someone else in to pay cash for the phone and cards so that they are not on surveillance camera. It's then untraceable. This is how all criminals conduct their business on phones. Lyft/Uber would have to require a photo ID to tie to your rideshare account, and those can also be faked when you're just taking a picture of it with the app.
Drivers can be background checked because they eventually deposit real money into their bank accounts. Riders can just buy prepaid rideshare cards with cash. The drivers must boycott these neighborhoods and do their own profiling. Uber/Lyft are enabling these crimes by punishing drivers for profiling.
VERY WELL SPOKEN, and as a former Uber AND Lyft driver I feel blessed NEVER HAVING EVER given a ride to someone with this kind of outcome! I drove in the Tidewater area/Hampton Roads area of Norfolk, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Portsmouth area of Virginia for about a year or so.
Even the immigrant that doesn't speak English knows that this dude needs to be locked away forever but the judges kept releasing him for over a decade of continuous crime, then you get 3 months in jail for a small amount of Marijuana possession. The system is not broken this country is broken! 💯
I’m sure the judges who knew he had a long criminal history and let him out are responsible!

This is so sad that he not only lost his life by just doing his job but he had the courage to flee the Taliban only to get murdered in cold blood in America! How ironic is that? This is happening more and more too often, and people think other parts of the world are so dangerous.

So uber and Lyft do background checks on drivers and won’t allow them on their platform if they have previous criminal record. But doesn’t do the same for riders. Why would they let such criminals on their platform endangering the lives of the drivers ????? Aren’t they responsible after so many incidents ?????? One or two ok it’s not their fault but if they keep allowing this to happen when are they going to be held accountable ??????
