  • This is a video of two 1/350 scale US Navy Ticonderoga Cruisers. Their full load displacement is about 10.500 tons and they have been built to perform command and control functions for the defense of US Navy task forces...carrier strike groups, Amphibious Ready Groups, Amphibious Expeditionary Units, Surface Action Groups, or any other groups of warships the US Navy send out onto the Oceans and seas of the world.
    They carry 128 VLS (Vertical Launch System) cells for missiles in two Mk-41 64 cell launchers, one forward and one aft as you can see. They also carry two 127 mm dual purpose rapid fire main guns, two 20 mm Phalanx CIWS, two 25 mm Mark 2 automated guns, two quad canisters for launching 8 Harpoon ASMs (or later, like the new Joint Strike Missile which will be outfitted on the LCS and FFG(X) vessels), and have a helicopter hanger and landing deck for two Sea Hawk (MM-60H or MM-60R) medium sized helicopters.large helicopter.
    This allows these vessels to continuously prosecute submarine contacts without having to send their single helicopter back to either refuel or rearm in order to continue prosecution of an enemy submarine. They would simply rotate the two helicopters onto the target until it was either destroyed or surrendered.
    The US Navy built 27 of these cruisers, commissioning them from Jan 1983 until Jul of 1994 at two yards, Huntington Ingalls, and Bath Iron Works

    These remain very modern vessels, having been updated regularly with the latest AEGIS systems, latest ECM capabilities, communication capabilities, weaponry, helicopters, and any other critical component. They can and have had their hulls strengthened and should give the US Navy 40-50 total years of service each.
    Again, these vessels act as defensive coordinators for carrier strike groups, large Amphibious groups, and any other critical ship groups the US sends out.
    These two 1/350 scale models are sold, with full hull or waterline capability by Mini Mart Models a subsidiary of Trumpeter, but are also sold by Trumpeter, Italeri, Revell, Dragon models and others.
    I do show 1/350 scale comparison between these vessels and the latest Ticonderoga cruiser, the USS Port Royal, CG-73, commissioned in 1994 in 1/350 scale so you can compare the two directly on my video about the new Type 055 Chinese Navy (PLAN) vessels which have just started coming out and perform the same function as the Ticonderoga.
    Another critical consideration for the Ticonderoga cruisers is that they are equipped with full and thorough Cooperative Engagement (CE) capabilities allowing them to control all AEGIS weapon systems in a task force to maximize the efficiency of the defense of the task force. US allied AEGIS vessels from nations like Australia, Norway, the Netherlands, Taiwan, Japan, south Korea, Australia and others are similarly equipped with this function.
    It is not known what, if any, CE capability the Chinese have.

    I had actually worked at the machine shop that made the cell assemblies that fire the missiles. The tolerances on most of the parts had to be held in tenths of thousandths. Just to give an example, 1/8th of an inch = 125 thousandths. Also they are made up of a very high grade of armor plate steel, and the welds have to pass very tight inspections also.

    These cruisers are fantastic! Would like to see them fully modernized and upgraded. Just a fantasy but it would be cool to operate an f35b on one. The f35 could data share with other assets and launch the new long range cruise missiles at a greater range. And ya, rail guns and lasers would be cool. The zumwalt power train would be sweet too.

    Great video Jeff, you and JJ modeling are my "go to" for scale model ships. I love you commentary and the information you provide. I have started my own 1/350 fleet and hope to build an amphibious ready group (wife allowing). Keep up the great work, cant wait to see your next video!

      Thank you so much for those kind wrs. God's best to you and yours. I have a new video coming out in a day or two about the need for the Osprey EV-22 AEW and the SV-22 ASW, with 1/72 scale of examples of each I have built.

    This is a great channel, it's rare to see a modeller give so much technical detail. Are you ex Navy? Have you heard of the game CMANO? ( Successor to the old harpoon wargame). I think you would like it

      I worked with and played Harpoon from the time it came out. Worked with every version and kept it all, but recently found a collector on eBay who wanted it all and so we came to terms. The new game you are talking about, and yes I have it...I used the latest Harpoon II and this game to model the naval battles in my book, "Dragons Fury:World War against America and the West" www.amazon.com/Dragons-Fury-World-against-America/dp/0971577900. That game is "Command: Modern Ari/Naval Operations," and they have done a GREAT job with it.Published by Matrix Games and WarfareSims. Anyhow, if you want, you can get the full length PDF eBook download of it here: www.jeffhead.com/ebookdownload/ I just ask folks if they like it, to please consider buying the full book. It started as a four volume book all in Trade Paper back, but they ech sold for about $12.00 each and so people had to spend about $50 buchs to get them all. so, in 2004 or so, I rewrote the whole thing into a single 1400 page hardback with a nice spine and hardback and a nce dust cover that Amason sells for $29.00. So they get it all for a lot less, and they get it in a much better format. ANyhow, take a look and tell your friends. I also have it out now for iPads/iPhones, Kindles, Nooks, etc. as a 3 volume series each for $4.00 so you get it all that way for $12.00. Try it at Smashwords, and just google the name there.

    I would prefer the Ticonderoga and Burkes to get the VLS LRASM

      @JeffHead-IdahoUSA  5 лет назад +2

      I have no doubt that they will. I listed the LRASM as one of the ordinance to fit into the Mk-41. They were designed to do so.

      If you read in the description of the video I explain (near the end) where I got the models. These are made by MiniMart which is owned (I believe) by Trumpeter. The model kits are available through Mini Mary, Mini Hobbies, Trumpeter, Italieri, Revell, and I blieve Dragon Models. You can find them almost always on eBay. Here's one of the model right now that is priced well: www.ebay.com/itm/MiniHobby-80702-1-350-USS-Cruiser-Bunker-Hill/352665959248

    very nice,sir jeff do you sell this?

    • @JeffHead-IdahoUSA
      @JeffHead-IdahoUSA  4 года назад

      I have sold some of them. People can contact me through the channel and I am willing to talk about it. I made a complete Heller 1/400 Charles de Gaulle CSG for a fellow with the carrier, two frigates and one DDG for about $350.00 + shipping complete, and have sold several single ships. That CSG was back when the CDG from Heller was about $50, the two Lafayettes were about $35 each and the one DDG was a Cassard that cost about $40 at the time. I also bought photo etch sets that altogether cost about $50...so I was about $210 into it plus my time...but you never get the time cost back. It was a nie little group. Now, one of my large US Navy carriers with its entire group I would probably sell for $500 to $600.00 plus shipping.
