The umpire does this to have a sense of where the catcher will move when for example there is a ball in the dirt. The umpire and catcher usually establish this right at the beginning of the game. Telling the catcher that he is going to do this so he can tell which way the catcher will go in order to retrieve a passed ball and for the umpire to not get in his way.
this sounds so dumb and "old head" of me, but i would give one of my testicles to play one more competitive game on a day like this. enjoy these days while you have them boys. they go by so, so fast.
