This isn't importing with layers.. you just selected similar (lineweight/color) and made layers for it. Very misleading.

David, not sure why you found this misleading. Watch at 3:25 in the video. I show how to import AutoCad and preserve all the layers in one step. The process is simple, save back the AutoCad to an old version and use file>open instead of file>import to get the AutoCad file into Illustrator. The process I show at the end of the video using select similar is an alternate method to help people to create layers in an existing Ai file who do not wish to start over with a fresh import.

@@LucasNajleTutorials Same with me. This doesn't work. I'm using AutoCAD 2018 and Illustrator CC. Puts all objects in same layer.

@@Thestripper1 which method are you using to bring the Cad file in to illustrator? Are you using file>open or are you importing? It makes a big difference. Also try saving back to an older version of cad. (autocad 2007 for example) then use file>open to open the older version cad file in illustrator.
Also, make sure the merge layers option is not checked in the pop up before accepting the dialog that pops up in your illustrator file.

@@LucasNajleTutorials In acad I do "Save as" and case in dwg 2007, 2010 or 2013 (dosn't seem to matter. I then navigate to where I saved the file, right click, open with, choose Illustrator. I was mistaken on my Acad version. I use 2016 so that might be the problem. And I make sure the "Merge Layers" box is not ticked.
