I truly feel awful for kids growing up now and not getting to experience the fun of having all your friends over for a Saturday of snacks and split screen games. We were doing that all the time.
Look I'm not a kid by any means, but I play with my younger cousins in that way using for example, Minecraft, or Among Us (not anymore but in 2020 lol) etc, there are lots of games that can still be played in Couch Co-op mode, but most people our age (asuming you're an adult too) don't know those games because they're for kids.
I played "The New Tetris" on N64 the other night. My girlfriend walks in and asks if she could try the game, I handed her the extra controller and we ended up playing for over two hours against each other and we had a lot of fun. There is just something special about playing in the same room together.

Yeah but what companies fail to realize is that split-screen actually helps sells systems and games more as it gives the original consumer the ability to showoff their purchase to friends and family and if they like the game enough will most likely go on to buy their own system and copy of the game so that they can play together from home. A lot of the game I've played were introduced to me from someone who asked if I wanted to split screen with them while the games that I played that were not split screen capable or co-op are very few in number. Split-screen is not just a consumer convenience it is also a marketing tool. So not only are these companies greedy, they're also very stupid.
@@Pen_Slinger This is a great point that I completely forgot about. I think companies have put all their eggs into digital marketing and social media, which might have more reach but still aren't the same as playing a game with someone via split-screen and realising you like it (and then buying it etc). That was exactly how I found Halo in the first place.

Mario party is the classic social game to play with people, and the new ones on switch are heaps fun to play with your mates. I think Metroid prime 2 will have a split screen feature which is mad cause it’s kinda like the nintendos halo
100% agree on this, I miss it constantly on big budget games and it has become a strong point for indies and NIntendo it seems. If you can afford a Switch, go for it - tons of good first party stuff and some solid indies that have local coop.
Back in 2009, when I had a PS2 console and played Pac-Man Kart Racing with my friend. Having split screen in CO-OP, etc.; is the best thing to play with because it gives memories of bonding together with your families and friends. As I grew up, gaming has changed. MOAB is taken over. Microtransactions, no split screens, other games don't have CO-OP. Gaming is sucks now, except the Nintendo consoles which I can see that I can still play with my family whether CO-OP or Solo, split screen or not.
Don't forget about that 3d Sony TV that used two headsets with different polarized lenses so it could overlay the split screens over each other. Both players got full screen. That didn't go anywhere..
I remember back in the day going to a friends house to play titles like left for dead 1 and 2, world at war zombies and also world at war campaign was sick af too. Sadly we will never have that ever again. But the advantages of online gaming is that you can connect with anyone in the world.
I started playing 4-player split screen on Psx (around '99), with Quake and CTR being the most memorable. At the time, we were 4 friends finishing primary school. Only 2 of us had a playstation, and the other two didn't even have a console. We kept playing for nearly 20 years with almost the same group. But on this last gen, only I continue with PS, 2 of them play on Xbox and the other on pc. Sadly, cross play is only available for a few games, and split screen is pretty much inexistent nowadays. That's the story of how our games based friendship came to an end. From time to time, we get together to play old games on pc or ps2, but I'm getting tired of that
There's nothing more that I want than to be able to play games co-op with my partner next to me on the couch. Everything you see nowadays is online multiplayer only. I'm annoyed 😒 Edited to say, I'm glad you mentioned It Takes Two! It's one of the only games in my recent memory that I've been able to play with my partner.
Aaaaaabsolutely worth getting a Switch. You can play FF1-XII on the go. Sooo many SNK fighters, and the new MvC all on the go, as well as Pokemon and all their first party titles. Secretly, the Switch Lite is the best of their current batch of consoles if you really enjoy handheld ergonomics, but I recommend being indulgent for an OLED Switch as well for docked multiplayer at home :)
The biggest FU to me with no more split screen is that I can’t play almost any modern game that is pick up and play with my kids, when me and the wife want to play we pretty much are stuck with COD and Mario Kart Tony Hawk and MK. I’m left with playing a game on one device and having the kids or wife play on another. Even trying to play the older backwards compat games don’t work. I’m waiting the day COD drops it, there’s so many other games where I feel you don’t even need to do a massive online MP, just give us a split screen team death match, a few maps that’s it. Enough to where you can hand a controller to someone and after 2-3 matches they get it, or just a goofy split screen game where you can do co-op. These consoles are powerful enough to do so but everyone wants the Fortnite Roblox always on money.
Recently played Earth Defense Force 6 on PC with split screen campaign co-op using Steam's remote play together. Me and my brother had a good time despite not being in the same room.
There are a heap of indie games fully embracing couch co-op, including ourselves. Nothing like playing games with your friends and family on the same couch :)
we never had this on pc, the only couch co-op games are party games nowadays I'm surprised when a game has split screen support on playstation multiplayer in general is much less social and inconvenient in cod lobbies don't work like they used to so you can't keep playing with the same group most games don't have voice chat and text chat is limited even mmos are now built to be played solo instead of as a group
What irks me is that even 2D fighting games of all things seem to be leaving the local multi-player behind. The Netherrealm games are particularly hostile to local gaming with those annoying cosmetics and fighter upgrades linked to network users.
I have a friend making a Halloween inspired couch co op / party game. Hopefully releasing fall 2025. They put out a single player adventure and 1v1 3d fighter. Synodic Arc
my only complaint with Couch Co-Op back in the day was in a lot of games the playfield would be split into 4 windows and with our small low res crt TVs back in the day it was hard to tell what was going on .i liked the smash bros games and other fighting games because they didn't have this issue maybe it would have been more fun on a big tv .
i also feel that the removal of couch co-op style gameplay was another reason behind the lacking reason of owning consoles. consoles were to be the most accessible home option for many gamers, and when they removed that staple of console gaming then ofc gaming became “lonely”. only feeling more targeted per consumer since they literally have no choice (like you mentioned), but to spend a hunk of money to just play ONE GAME. the inclusion of cross platforming helps, but it’s not the same.
Devs can't even make a complete, finished game anymore, its no surprise theres no couch co-op. That, and always online/online connected consoles and the endless monetization.
I live in rural Nova Scotia. Faster internet for me would be over three times the price of my current provider. Im currently playing through earth defense force 6 with my spouse. The game seems campy and it is but we're having a great time.
and they've even managed to brainwash some people into believing that separate systems are the best way to game. my roommate has Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which has 4-player split-screen, but my other roommate would rather play on his computer in his room, and our other friend who plays Halo prefers playing on his own computer at his house, so much so that he has actually LEFT OUR HOUSE so that he could dial in on his own computer. like... dude, you're totally missing the point of playing Halo together. the point is playing TOGETHER. y'know, hanging out and playing games in the same room? like friends do? the whole friggin point is that it's meant to be social!
Corporate publishers mandated *500 LIVE SERVICE* games, almost all the big flops have been live service games. Games live or die on player count are totally or half useless once the corporate servers switch off.
