Why Doesn't the Internet Feel Fun Anymore?
Memes. Aesthetics. Geocities. And... cults? I went on a journey through the early days of the internet- and it was chaotic. Looking at everything from Frutiger Aero to Y2K Aesthetics, the 90s to the 2000s, the 2010s to today, I tried to find out if things really were "better" or if it was all just... nostalgia.

I remember when the internet wasn't full of bots...
I kind of hope there will be a kind of revolution in the internet someday, breaking free from the limitations of your go-to-sites and going back to the wild internet without limits. It sounds unlikely but as every site gets more strict and controlling, I'm sure there is a chance of something like this happening one day
26 minutes of wikipedia summary of the internet with no aded value thanks for nothing
I miss the man server: that was so awesome
i miss my windows 7
4:12 Oh baby a triple? Or trickshot? I don’t remember
Interesting
Oh wow, the dark aesthetic apparently came about thanks to the influence gta3 had on the population, especially kids. I saw on an interview, the devs of jack& daxter 2 talked about early development. They had kids test the game before the aesthetic change and the kids said something like: "this is kinda cool but it would be more of a game for my little brother." and the dev was like: "you're 8." So they made it darker to appeal to the kids who thought they were grown 😂
it officially died when everything became ai generated
The internet sucks now because radical extremists(racists), bad faith actors, ruined everything, but mostly smartphones. This and the clash of advertisers. Smartphones brought all the normies to the internet, which can barely navigate a mouse and keyboard. So, every damn website must optimize to phones. Apple got rid of flash. So, there are no REAL browser games anymore.
It’s weird you couldn’t say final fantasy 10, having to say X. But you said final fantasy 7 and not VII.
This video works as an example of why Internet history should be studied as its own field. Like how we study regular human history.
You're punching down a lot, but buddy, video essays aren't much better than the rest of the slop you're talking about.
its mountain lol gaming MLG
Damn, you are definitely one generation older than I am. To me, chat rooms are a useless relic and this convoluted rainbow mess doesn't do anything for me. I miss the lack of censorship. No swear words, no politics, no spice. The Internet has lost it's spice because of corporate guidelines and THEIR vision of making money. Leave your dusty antiques in the museum and realize the essence. The Internet doesn't have to look shitty and feel shitty to use. I remember those days. It's the freedom of speech for everybody. Don't like it here? Find your corner of preference or start a fight. Like real life. Not like school where fighting is bad, swearing is bad, being mean is not acceptable and slurs are a no go. Fuck that.
I caught the mid/end of this era and I just miss 2016-2018 (maybe even 2019) RUclips so much
At the end; it sounds exactly like that black mirror episode where he is the voice of a digital cat that jokingly runs for president and then wins
Cause you are experiencing brainrot.

It was an expression of optimism for the future. Sadly it didn’t work out.
I consider 2010 the brain rot year for kids born in 01-09

It happened when Apple killed Flash. Flash is the reason the Internet was a rich experience. They said they killed it because of security but that's b*******. They killed it because they came out with an iPhone, and they didn't want real Rich experiences to only be available on desktop, thus we get no Rich experiences anymore.
Man I used to love surreal memes

‘This looks more interesting’ is a very relative statement. What is called ‘awesome’ in this video looks cheesy to me…probably because I was there and at the time, every update and every change seemed like an upgrade from what came before. I think that died around 2015 ish. That’s when the innovation ended (think, the last real big upgrade of iPhones) and the aesthetic we have now became the only one around- our current mono-aesthetic. When there is only one aesthetic, it starts to feel oppressive and the of course anything else, even that dumb looking shit from 2003, starts to look fun again.
1:56 nyan cat was that popular yet momone momo still was ignored (if you didn’t know, the nyan cat video had a cover of a Hatsune miku song by daniwellP, using an UTAU called momone momo)
Even in the 2010's. It wasn't so bad. Things seemed to change when Politics ("brigading") and Big Business came in. There seemed to be more disagreement and less wholesome content at that point.
True

RUclipsr AnthonyPitt1 was a great example of the late stage
we can build something new, learning how is complicated though. i suggest reading computer networks by Tanenbaum.
I'm gonna take a side that nobody's ever willing to but it's not the internet guys. It's mostly about you. You are riding the nostalgia wave of the old internet, not because it was good but you grew up with it. Now you don't see the same fun you used to as a child. But remember, when you were a child everything was fun. You had fun in the most little things you can ever imagine now. You are still trying to be that child in the adult world, and it's okay. But I agree that the internet is full of corpos trying to sell you shit and psychological operations to keep you on some side or a political belief. everyone is on the extreme sides right now. there is no healthy place, only toxicity. when i see some healthy, calm place, i mostly sit there. back in the day, it was a new invented thing to look on. as people who were interested in this new tech, we got used to it and loved it very much. because the first wave was only consisted of people who were healthy enough (with some dark twisted minded people too cough shocksites cough) now it's millions of people looking into it everyday, thousands of people creating content every day, tens of thousands of people commenting their opinion on stuff everyday. four horsemen (facebook, twitter, instagram and youtube) of the apocalypse enshittifying the masses all over the globe everyday with their doom scrolling algorithm.
finally a comment that actually *ISNT* blinded by nostalgia
Such great video 😊😊 love it
Because people are chronically online trying to drown their problems all the time like the pathetic loser they all are. Guess what being online all the time isn’t gonna make you feel less of a loser deep down. Boom Didn’t even need to watch the video.
the dude is complaining that the internet is less distracting now, noice
Majority of people here being nostalgic over 2010 brainrot are the same ones calling kids retarded because they laugh at that skibidi toilet stuff. 2010 is a brainrotting as any other future decades
late 2000s and early 2010s internet was the best.
Frutiger aero was our peak as a species.
Corporate greed...
Reject modernity, embrace tradition.
answer: money you get away you get a good job with more pay and you're okay money, it's a gas grab that cash with both hands and make a stash new car, caviar, four star daydream think i'll buy me a football team money, get back i'm alright, Jack, keep your hands off of my stack money, it's a hit gon't give me that do-goody-good bullshit i'm in the high-fidelity first class traveling section i think i need a lear jet
