    - P2P - Doesn't need corporate servers and can play with trusted friends
    - LAN/ADHOC - Doesn't require to be online
    - Split screen - as described in the video
    - offline bots - Multiplayer available anytime when no players around.

    Haven’t watched the video yet, but my assumption is that split screen disincentivizes purchasing multiple consoles / copies of games. So… greed.

    • @Pen_Slinger
      @Pen_Slinger 2 месяца назад +11

      Yeah but what companies fail to realize is that split-screen actually helps sells systems and games more as it gives the original consumer the ability to showoff their purchase to friends and family and if they like the game enough will most likely go on to buy their own system and copy of the game so that they can play together from home.
      A lot of the game I've played were introduced to me from someone who asked if I wanted to split screen with them while the games that I played that were not split screen capable or co-op are very few in number. Split-screen is not just a consumer convenience it is also a marketing tool. So not only are these companies greedy, they're also very stupid.

    • @ExtraMintyy
      @ExtraMintyy  2 месяца назад +7

      @@Pen_Slinger This is a great point that I completely forgot about. I think companies have put all their eggs into digital marketing and social media, which might have more reach but still aren't the same as playing a game with someone via split-screen and realising you like it (and then buying it etc).That was exactly how I found Halo in the first place.

    • @SeekerGoldstone
      @SeekerGoldstone Месяц назад +1

      @@Pen_Slinger This is 100% true. When I was a kid, I bought games for 2 reasons: either it was real cheap in the bargain bin, or it was something that my friends and I were all playing split screen. Nobody waited in line for a copy of Psychonauts (which was excellent btw), we all waited in line for a copy of Halo 2.

    Back in 2009, when I had a PS2 console and played Pac-Man Kart Racing with my friend. Having split screen in CO-OP, etc.; is the best thing to play with because it gives memories of bonding together with your families and friends. As I grew up, gaming has changed. MOAB is taken over. Microtransactions, no split screens, other games don't have CO-OP. Gaming is sucks now, except the Nintendo consoles which I can see that I can still play with my family whether CO-OP or Solo, split screen or not.

    Finding out about the 3/4 player splitscreen campaign glitch in Halo 3 was the best thing ever, it ran like crap and probably put a lot of stress on the console but it was so worth it. Then later on realising the exact same trick worked in a few of the other games too, almost as if it had deliberately not been fixed or something. I could have sworn the issue with Halo 3 crashing during the Cortana bits was fixed at one point too.
    How times have changed.

    I started playing 4-player split screen on Psx (around '99), with Quake and CTR being the most memorable. At the time, we were 4 friends finishing primary school. Only 2 of us had a playstation, and the other two didn't even have a console. We kept playing for nearly 20 years with almost the same group. But on this last gen, only I continue with PS, 2 of them play on Xbox and the other on pc. Sadly, cross play is only available for a few games, and split screen is pretty much inexistent nowadays. That's the story of how our games based friendship came to an end. From time to time, we get together to play old games on pc or ps2, but I'm getting tired of that

    The biggest FU to me with no more split screen is that I can’t play almost any modern game that is pick up and play with my kids, when me and the wife want to play we pretty much are stuck with COD and Mario Kart Tony Hawk and MK. I’m left with playing a game on one device and having the kids or wife play on another. Even trying to play the older backwards compat games don’t work. I’m waiting the day COD drops it, there’s so many other games where I feel you don’t even need to do a massive online MP, just give us a split screen team death match, a few maps that’s it. Enough to where you can hand a controller to someone and after 2-3 matches they get it, or just a goofy split screen game where you can do co-op. These consoles are powerful enough to do so but everyone wants the Fortnite Roblox always on money.

    Aaaaaabsolutely worth getting a Switch. You can play FF1-XII on the go. Sooo many SNK fighters, and the new MvC all on the go, as well as Pokemon and all their first party titles. Secretly, the Switch Lite is the best of their current batch of consoles if you really enjoy handheld ergonomics, but I recommend being indulgent for an OLED Switch as well for docked multiplayer at home :)

    i also feel that the removal of couch co-op style gameplay was another reason behind the lacking reason of owning consoles. consoles were to be the most accessible home option for many gamers, and when they removed that staple of console gaming then ofc gaming became “lonely”. only feeling more targeted per consumer since they literally have no choice (like you mentioned), but to spend a hunk of money to just play ONE GAME. the inclusion of cross platforming helps, but it’s not the same.

    we never had this on pc, the only couch co-op games are party games
    nowadays I'm surprised when a game has split screen support on playstation
    multiplayer in general is much less social and inconvenient
    in cod lobbies don't work like they used to so you can't keep playing with the same group

    and they've even managed to brainwash some people into believing that separate systems are the best way to game. my roommate has Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which has 4-player split-screen, but my other roommate would rather play on his computer in his room, and our other friend who plays Halo prefers playing on his own computer at his house, so much so that he has actually LEFT OUR HOUSE so that he could dial in on his own computer.

I played in arcade and i have fond memories of 4 player sports games and wwe on the ps2. and the sad truth is that now days no one uses split screen. its such a highly requested feature yet ive seen satistics as low as 2% of players utilize the mode. its hard to put dev time towards something like this. its very low on steam about 0.5-2%(which makes sense) but even on console the utilization metric is still low (about 5-8%), switch is a different story its higher in some games the average ive seen is 17%. i love lan parties and split screen (and i will include them in my games) but its clear to see why many dont include these things

    So 5 not having splitscreen had zilch to do with competitive and everything to do with a last minute engine switch, up until like 2014 5 was developed for 4s midnight engine and the beta was hosted on that version as well splitscreen still could have been kept in campaign it wasn't because of a dip in fps, it was becauce the engine would crash from how splitscreen is done
    the actual issue and why the switch still offers it comes down to demand of fidelity over playability, imagine trying to run two instance of CodMW19 on an xbox one, Slip space even before it was officially revealed gave 343 so much shit and it didn't help that Microsoft just didn't give a shit about the software being difficult, coupled with a repeat of 2 and 3s over development problems that bungie themselves admit effected the end result and you got infinite's launch
    who knows this might have been different if they had support studios back in 2015 instead of last minute before release but im starting to get sick and tired of people blaming 343 for lack of split screen in games, especially the same people that said 343 made halo irrelevant in 2012, why would an "irrelevant franchise" impact more popular games? Let alone games that ditched split screen a year before halo did?
    Also the glitched splitscreen was extremely unstable, hence why it wasn't enabled
    The fact they actually did put a lot of focus on split screen for infinite and it still got stunted from slipspace they should be able to do splitscreen for unreal engine but it's sad that microsoft, the software company, gave up on the software they spent so much money on to buy the rights to back in 2007, Phil Spencer screwed over tons of games and devs and got praised by the consumers and rewarded for it.
