    Found a ton of articles about using alcohol to remove hot glue, not a single one mentioned why it works. Had to go digging on Reddit to find the answer, posted by user "pyridine":
    Vinyl acetate resins are soluble in isopropanol, so I suppose a vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer could easily be as well. The polymer chains are simply dissolving and losing their solid structure at the edges where you apply isopropanol, which is changing the nature of the adhesive surface between the glue and an object.
    The polymer chains are now solubilized (completely surrounded at a molecular level) by isopropanol molecules which is preventing their strong interaction with the metal/wood/whatever.
    Pretty neat trick, this is going to come in handy if I ever need to resolder the headphones I've recently replaced the cable on.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 5 лет назад

      I have observed that the material remains just about coherent but loses strength; it absorbs alcohol, expands, it loses adhesion and its cohesion is greatly reduced. Chances are, debonding from the underlying surface is both due to solubilisation and just mechanical leverage from expansion. I also observed that ethanol and isopropanol have approximately the same effect, but either needs to be fairly highly concentrated.
      Furthermore EVA is quite gas permeable and i think at least a small amount of alcohol vapour can easily make it through the volume of the material. I was able to observe similar changes by applying alcohol in vicinity and letting it evaporate near hot glue blob rather than applying it directly to the blob.
      If it was a high-ethylene EVA it would have behaved closer to LDPE, so it stands to reason that the copolymer in glue stick leans towards high PVAc content.

    That's awesome! I have had similar instances happen to me with PS1 systems that I've bought to fix / mod / resell as well. It's always like a little hidden gem finding an old school mod-chip installed in a system when you didn't even purchase it for that reason. A neat little piece of history behind most if not all of these old school systems included inside. I don't have many PS2 mod-chips (YET) but it's always fun to find these gems. Also pretty neat trick removing the hot glue, looks like it just falls off like butter that is super cool! One last night, very cool to not be nit picky about people's installations, like you said we're grown-ups right? Lol as long as your system works and you're able to install what you need, cool beans! You're right, we are adults and I think we are mature enough to be able to kindly debate on the modwork. I mean that's half the fun of seeing another persons mod anyway I think. The mod job that person did actually didn't look too bad at all. Solder joints looked good and the wire lengths were good. Of course it's not as fancy pants as your installs but it did look professional and looks like it was done correctly which is all you can really ask for in a mod. Only fault I'd say is the dang hotglue. There are so many other better ways he could have used to tack the wires down without making such a mess.

  • @Eyem1337
    @Eyem1337 4 года назад

    One thing I didn't see that I do remember from installing DMS3 chips is (and I forget the exact point) but you were supposed to twist 2 wires together for one of the connections to isolate it and eliminate noise in the line/connection.
    I believe I only had to do this for the DMS3 specifically.

    V9 have it's own unique DMS3 V9 chip, does not work with any earlier version, afaik. Remembering trying to install it V5/V6 and didn't work. Got it from V9 with burned LA-chip. To this one I changed LA6508 RII and DMS4 Pro, got from my cousin. I still have it and working fine.

      @@ThirstWorldTTV
      This is just exprerience. V9 does not need prevention chips, you'll just have to lif the 17th pin of LA-chip and solder it to +5V. Called Romeo Mod. When the LA-chip is burned, then you will have to change the whole chip to original + Romeo, or to LA6508 RII, where Romeo has already done.
      BTW I watched the video of your collection. That's why I left message for your information. Nice collection you have there. Oh, and for DMS3 V9, it actually says it on the chip, you cannot miss it.

I think part of the problem I have been having with my soldering is using really cheap crappy solder, as it ALWAYS gets sucked back on to the iron and simply refuses to flow into the joint whenever I try to solder.
