Denis was wanting to cast David Bowie before Jared Leto. I would've loved to see that.
Yeah but Bowie was getting old, even if he didn't die at the time.
Aze may he rest in peace
That would have seriously taken it from 99% to 100%.
I would've rather seen that. Although surprisingly Jared Leto did not piss me off in this movie....probably cause he's barely in it
Jared Leto's role in this film was...strange, I get it. The guy is supposed to be blind (except for when he can see through the eyes of those machine thingy's), but the guy acted like he hadn't slept for 3 days and decided to sleep walk through the script.
I gotta disagree with Martin about the first hour. I think the fact that the first hour kinda stretches its legs and takes it time is what helps entrance the viewer into the world rather than passing it over and going straight into the movie
Gertz is a replicant
I'm glad someone else noticed to.
Spoiler
He certainly doesn't seem natural!
I am the captain now
*I am the Blade Runner now
First hour was incredible because it humanizes the main character and it was crucial to the central theme of the movie that we take the time to see the world through his perspective.
Not cool, guys, for letting that one particular plot point out of the bag. Did they not give you guys disclosure sheets before the screening?
Aside from that, this movie gets a Better Than Sex from me.
I didn't mind it at all. Was completely engrossed from beginning to end. But I can see how most would differ.
Midnight Movie Madness I appreciated it aswell. Allowed myself to get lost in the world building.
If you didn't know he was a replicant you weren't paying attention
Kou Yang you are being kind the first hour and 20 is pointless this was as bad as peter Jackson's king kong lol
Better than esx all the way
29:40 for rating if you don't want spoilers
Marvin the Martian im glad i found your comment before they fuckin spoiled it. Thanks a lot
@@ahjayz Wait I'm confused what did they spoil, exactly?
I feel that if you're aware of Bladerunner and going into this movie to see the sequel, then you are expecting a detective noir thinking man's sci-fi.
Well im glad someones gave this film some fuckin love, cause mainstream audiences were harsh on BR2049, its just such a underrated film.
So he has the expressionless face because he’s a replicant or they made him into a replicant because he had a expressionless face in this?
A replicant hunting replicants? Oh is this the Mega Man X movie?
oatmeal1209 Who's Zero, then? =D
finally
an ART HOUSE BLOCKBUSTER
as was Kubricks 2001, and Clockwork Orange before. Also Orwells 1984.
OMG they dont get it
its not that the character cant show emotion , he is not allowed to show emotions because humans want to keep thing separate and him having emotions or showing emotions in his line of work will cause him to hesitate and he doesnt want that cuz then he will be terminated asap, Ryan did a great job, and the world is very complex. I feel like double toasted didnt get it, this movie is not for your average movie watcher its for the fans and for the people who are interested in movie industry cuz im pretty sure it inspired many people just like it did to my friend.
i hope no one reads this because in my opinion double toasted are wrong but that doesnt mean i hate them or have no respect towards them plz dont flame me commenters :D and good day.
Such a beautiful movie. Best movie I've seen all year. The visuals, the musical score, and the acting were flawless. Every shot of this film can be hung on a wall as an art piece. I can't wait to see it again.
I love how they don't just spell everything out with exposition and leave questions and allow us as an audience learn the nuance and narrative on our own. They give you just enough to fill in the details with your imagination. I absolutely love this movie. ...just as much as the original. It's brilliant if you ask me. From the direction to the design to the cinematography to the acting, storytelling, subtlety, and in my opinion, it does really have heart... it's all done so well. There is a lot of classic film making here. I really liked Jared Leto's performance too. Lol.
The Pinocchio ending was pretty great I think too.
Thanks for telling me about those shorts. Seen a few reviews so far and none mentioned the shorts. One group of reviewers had the shorts running behind them and did not make any reference to them. Though I suppose they may have been added after video was recorded.
Please put up the "My Little Pony" review as well. It was hilarious!
Makes me laugh every time Korey messes up a name of a person or movie!
The long runtime didn't bother me--the shots are beautiful and the movie's always going somewhere (and pretty seamlessly at that).
This movie has to be viewed from the perspective of a ‘vibe’. It’s one of my favorite movies of all time but I recommend it to people as - forget everything and settle in like you would if you were getting high … the plot is amazing, the story is incredibly empathetic and intelligent… but it’s the soundtrack and the visuals that make you realize - if you want this thing to get to the point, you’re not gonna like it. It forces you to settle into it and let it go, because it’s perfect. But it has no interest in making you happy? Like acid, you have to give yourself to it, not the other way around, and if you do, it’s unparalleled- including the original, which is amazing but did the hard work of building the scaffolding this movie is built on
This Harrsin Ford is really gonna go places
Rathees U nice joke unless your serious 😐
I agree with Martin. It's best to watch the original Blade Runner beforehand. To invest damn near 3 hours of 2049, the knowledge of the original builds that necessary anticipation to know what's next. Otherwise the lengthy scenes of exploration and exposition might bore the hell out of the casual moviegoer craving action.
Weird, for me unlike the 1st movie where Roy was the only one with a heart (for me) I thought this one had a lot of heart, because this replicants are "more human than human" but they have to keep that part of themselves hidden, because if they show it, retirement comes... :(
Nilbanas That was the point of the first movie.
Not gonna lie, gotta dock you guys some points for this review. Pretty much every other review that I have seen for this movie did not divulge into major plot points in the film outside of what was shown in the trailers........except for this one. Love you guys, been with ya since the Spill days, but I am kinda disappointed. Not even a minute into the review and you reveal a pretty signifigent plot point. Regardless of whether or not we would have come to that conclusion immediately, that was kind of a dick move, especially when the director of the film asked people who saw the film to not reveal any plot points not revealed in the trailers (not sure if that was told to you guys or not, but I digress).
Nathan Lemuel bro what's your problem
ummmmm.....read my previous comment? and try not to start some shit? please? that would be great.
I agree so much, this is fucking pathetic on their behalf, hope they cop some serious backlash for this because it is so not cool
Nathan Lemuel chill out
Nathan Lemuel then don’t watch movie reviews what did you expect? Holy shit is it really that hard not listen or stay away from the internet from spoilers. You have a brain don’t you? Use unless your Patrick the starfish
Aye I'm gonna wait until I watch the movie and then come back to watch the review because you guys be dropping spoilers left and right up in this review.
This film is full price ya bastards!
I didn't watch K and his Waifu go through all that for a matinee goddamit!
Whoever watched the original never expected an action movie.
This movie should be titled ‘BLADE WALKER’, because every scene Gosling is in, he’s slowly walking toward some inanimate object😖.
Johnny Utah holy shit I know right everything felt slow & the pacing didn’t help me get through 🤤🤤
Don't watch review till you've seen the movie .....love these but they kinda spoil key plot points and suprises
Sooo happy I checked out the comments before pressing "play". Because there's not a single thing about the story I want to be even slightly spoiled on. I'll come back to watch this review after I've seen the film.
Steven Dunn Good call my man, go into this one fresh
I did the same. Very glad now. I've learned.
They don't spoil anything
"Harrsin Ford." Good job Double Toasted...
The only problem with having to watch the original Blade Runner before this is which version to watch. There’ve been a lot of different cuts released on video.
DetroitAlan01 Villeneuve has said 2049 is a sequel to the Final Cut, according to this article:
www.esquire.com/entertainment/movies/a12775063/where-to-stream-blade-runner/
DetroitAlan01 the original was too boring for me just different too not my kind of movie though my opinion
Bill Cipher
You’re better than I, since I’ve never been able to watch Blade Runner in one sitting. I usually fall asleep 30 mins into it and wake up to see Harrison Ford running from Rutger Hauer.
This is the truly great SF film of this era.
Good review by Korey.
For anyone reading the comments before watching the review: If you want to know absolutely nothing before watching the movie, don't watch this.
For those claiming spoilers: I saw this yesterday, and I can tell you right now they didn't spoil shit. Hell, everything they pointed out I already knew going in and I hardly followed the movie up until release. And even if I didn't know, these details are the base set up for the story, which is literally revealed within minutes. So please, stop with the "mAjUr SpoILerss!!!!" Because they aren't. They could've gone even deeper.
This is the best review/discussion I've seen yet for the flick. I agree with Korey, even when it's quiet and slow I just enjoyed walking in this world, amazingly it's better than the original.
Will you be doing a My Little Pony Movie Review? The new MLP Movie coming out tomorrow?
They did do the review. It was HILARIOUS. Not sure if they will post it on RUclips though (really hope they do).
All we'll say to that is ... keep it locked onto our RUclips channel today. You may be magically surprised. :) - ND
Yay!
Yeah, bring that Horse shit.
They reviewed that already.
... the only Blade Runner review I need. Let's go!
Do they show the shorts in theaters or just go to RUclips? Looking for big screen experience here.
meg Only on RUclips.
You guys are back?! Thank you. Old school s____.com fan
Should be titled spoiler review
Fishels It's LITERALLY the first 5 minutes of the movie
They pretty much always spoil shit in their reviews. Don't watch 30 minute reviews expecting to avoid plot points.
Facts
Akira.
Me: ~nods~
Ghost in the Shell.
Me: ~nods~
Battlefield Earth.
Me: ~almost chokes on my chicken tender~
Eating a chicken tender is just about the only thing to make that Goddamn Battlefield Earth movie worth watching.
Thanks for the comment and support Kage!
@@DoubleToasted_ I never saw the movie, yet I go through some weird P.T.S.D. when someone mentions it. Thanks for the reply and I love the show. Keep it up!
I died watching this podcast! "He's working the couch." DEAD!!! Aww shit!!
"THIS IS NOT A SPOILER" Well blade runner's source material did have a bit of a back story before the original short story came out, 'do androids dream of electric sheep'. The back story does state that there was a nuclear war that did occur which whipped out much of the planet's animal and plant species which caused the boom in replicate technology. Also the colonies were originally meant to be an illusion of salvation for the human race as people believed that they had off world colonies were safe havens for us but they weren't the paradises that people believed them to be. Instead they were written as work sites or prison colonies. I believe that they stated that this film takes that nuclear war and devastation and presents it in a way that show cases the realistic image of a planet dying. Earth in this movie is dying and humans along with it and the replicants are being designed to survive the human race once all real humans parish.
I love the first hour of this film. Great production design and music.
Wasn't expecting to be hit by a spoiler. Thanks, guys.
well you weren't hit by one
MrTHEMONEEMAKER So you knew the main character was a replicant before seeing the movie?
Why do you watch a review before watching the movie? Help me to understand. (I'm new to this)
Personally i think Ryan Goslings character being emotionless makes the handful of times he breaks the monotone nature of him and starts feeling things all the more impactful.
Ryan gosling being a replicant would've been a nice surprise especially since it wasn't In any of the trailers 😯
it's revealed in the clips online as well as in the movie at the very beginning
Nemo’s mom dies.
Luckily I saw the film before watching this, because not knowing that plot point made the film's opening scene a lot better.
Love you guys, but you really should've put a spoiler alert in the title.
It's pronounced: Denis VEEL-NUHV.
I know, I'm french.
Hon hon hon
Glad I waited to watch this after I saw the movie. I had a feeling these guys would drop spoilers, they always do
This is why I watch the movie before seeing reviews. So I'm not mad about things that are known 5 seconds into the movie. I didn't like the first one but this one was pretty awesome.
Glad I decided to watch this AFTER seeing the movie (EXCELLENT btw). I will be doing that with these big movies and your channel from now on. The director did put out a notice to not give away much about the plot when reviewing this (which ever side you fall on), so it kinda urks me to see that you guys need to talk so much about the plot when other critics don't need to. They don't tell you K is a replicant in the trailers or marketing, so SPOILER. That being said, still enjoyed the video, but be a little more careful next time.
it's revealed right at the beginning in a non surprise way so no spoiler
Not surprised at Martin's rating. If it ain't shit like Manchester by the Sea, he doesn't really like it.
bw00d He gave it a high matinee, how’s that not liking it?
Why does Ryan and Harrison look like a father and son duo in this movie. Let’s just hope Ryan doesn’t double cross and kill him in the third act 😂💯
I liked it. But something is just....off with it.
I know it's a strange thing to say for a Blade Runner movie, but it's too slow moving, and you're usually a scene ahead of the picture so you're watching a lot of what you predicted play out....
Visually it's great, but I didn't get the same grittiness and lived in world vibe as before.
Honestly, I thought the original was a much better movie.
The_Angry_Raccoon I rather watch The Godfather 1 & 2 when it comes to watching sequels
Gotta agree with you, I loved the dense and oppressive atmosphere of the original BR film. Now BR 2049 is breathtaking on a visual level in its own right, but it paled slightly in comparison to the original.
I had no idea about the shorts, and this movie still worked perfectly for me.
The themes of Blade Runner 2049 . .
1) Reality has no right to attack God, for God being identical to reality
2) Movement and image are different forces of nature
3) A discovery can create the censorship that leads to its existence
4) Symmetry is something that is moved through
5) A history can be supported by the parts that make up the history
6) The source of reality can feel guilty for not imitating reality
7) Revolution exists outside of reality
8) Any experience is a machine
9) It isn't possible to experience bias
Dude, this review is hilarious but all of the spoilers are exactly why I waited to watch it until after seeing it. Yes that was introduced at the beginning but I didn't see it coming. You guys also revealed the girls name which definitely came later. But yeah, if you're going to see this, watch the original and shorts beforehand. They give nothing away.
Randomfools I fell asleep watching both of them 😴
This review is a little to spoilerish for my taste. I stopped watching a few minutes in but now that I've seen the movie I'm watching the entire thing and it is a bit spoilerish.
It is thou
Gosling being a replicant is actually a MAJOR SPOILER for the movie. If you follow the movie., from beginning, middle and to the end his chances of being a replicant is questioned.
No it's not dude did you even see the movie? He busts through a wall, he glues a wound shut are you blind?
It’s revealed he’s a replicant in the first scenes
Just saw the film so don't care about the spoilers. Great review guys
Fucking hell guys, way to spoil a huge part of Gosling's arc within three minutes of the video. "This is not a spoiler" my ass, that's the centerpiece of his whole character. I'm glad I watched this *after* I saw the movie.
It’s too bad she won’t live, but then again, who does?
For the people complaining cause they spoiled the movie
A) It's literally revealed in the first 5 minutes
B) This review is a HALF HOUR chances are something is gonna get spoiled. If you don't want absolutely 0 chance of spoilers DONT WATCH REVIEWS
C) You're an idiot if you can't figure out Gosling is a Replicant from the trailers alone. I mean come on right when he was cast I said to myself "He's probably gonna be a replicant."
I've never seen the original Blade Runner, and I loved this film.
This had the same issue that Ghost in Shell had , much better made than that film but still had the issue of not carrying the argument and concepts far enough but it looked great and had solid performances
Low Full Price
They reveal Goslin as a replicate very early in the movie. And like 3 other reviewers mentioned it.
CELLS. INTERLINKED.
He's not pretentious about his name. He's just French Canadian.
Don't watch this till you've seen the film!!!!!!! SPOILERS!!!!!
STOP saying 1982!! I graduated in 85' I know I'm old, but, you don't have to act like we are one foot in the grave. This movie in its day was one of our better ones. Just STOP making me feel as old as fing dirt. I already know, you don't have to rub it in. BUT, I will give you all a thumbs up because I LOVE your blogs and have seen movies just because you guys liked them.
Oh wow. I didn't even know there were shorts to watch. Will have to catch. It after I am down with this review. I agree with every criticism and the praise here. I really loved this film.
I’m glad I saw this after I saw the movie, I didn’t want to know K is a replicant, and I think knowing that before seeing actually takes away from the experience.
As for Jared Leto’s acting, I think he did a great job, he’s the guy who saved humanity and is a genius, he’s like the Steve Jobs/Bill Gates/Elon Musk/Nikola Tesla of his generation, of course he’s gonna be weird and not very normal.
At first I was pissed that they just threw out such a major spoiler the way they did. Then you remember that right after they tried qualifying it by saying, "and that's not a spoiler by the way, because they tell you this right at the beginning of the movie." So the issue with these four, who I usually enjoy the hell out of, is eithert that they don't care about spoiling their viewers, even after the fricken director pleaded with everyone who got an early screening not to, and literally every other review I've seen for this respected and abided by that. Or that they didn't mean to spoil anything, yet somehow thought the major thing they revealed wasn't one. Which if absolutely ridiculous. Of course it is. And throwing that out their so causually, with zero warning was just shitty thing for them to do. I like this channel a lot. And I really wanted to watch them talk about this movie, but once that happened I had to shut it down, because I simply couldn't trust that they weren't going to keep doing that bullshit for the rest of the video, because they simply don't seem to understand what a fucking spoler even is
You guys did a good job here. It deserves credit, but it's not the perfect masterpiece some are making out.
I don't want a sequel. I fine with this one. A sequel will not be that good.
If you guys didn't want spoilers you should have just went out to see the movie. It's got a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, I think you know what their ratings are gonna be. Watching a 32 minute review of a movie you don't want to be spoiled BEFORE you even see the film is really ridiculous.
I've never cared about spoilers, but if I did, I certainly wouldn't be watching a review this long before I saw the film, especially if the overall critic and audience ratings are positive and it is not labeled "SPOILER FREE."
This movie gets better and better with every scene. It's a movie that you probably have to watch twice to fully grasp. I will give it a 'better then sex' rating.
Denis Villeneuve isn't a stage name... The guy is from Quebec, the French-speaking part of Canada. The best way to pronounce it without making too much of an effort is "Deh-knee Vill-nohve".
This is his second movie that he has made that people have said in a review that the movie is to long 1 Arrival 2 BLADE RUNNER 2049 . So hes that type of Director that could tell a story in 1hour and 30 min and makes it 2 hour and 30 min and overemphasize the story when he didn't have to but its still a good movie but not great . Because Arrival was good but not great its a movie you forget about right after you watch it and you just don't look to watch it again. You don't look it up on, on-demand or look for the DVD at the store to guy it if you happen to see it you would buy it but when you get home you wont put it on. This movie seems like the same thing but i have to see it first.
No spoiler warning on a key plot point? You can critique the film without revealing that stuff. Glad i saw the film before i watched this.
Denis said he took this job because he didnt want anyone else making it and screwing it up lol he did a damn good job
PLEASE for the love of cinnamon toast add a spolier to your title!
Revealing that crucial plot point ruins the movie for those who haven't seen it yet.
Jared leto can over act and under act at the same time lol
In regards to the reviewing a movie...I say everything in the first act is fair game.
I wanted to like this but god it was the most unnecessary movie ever and I couldn't get past the copy and paste shit this movie pulls. Such a generic plot and they did next to nothing with Ford (probably because there was nothing left to do with his character). This was nothing but a hollow vehicle for Gosling wrapped in Bladerunner packaging. Even down to bringing Rachel back with cgi. Ugh... Almost left this movie before it ended.
A true piece of Art.
Can you not spoil things, but also just give the review some structure. it feels like 30 minutes of rambling about random plot points.
watch the original just before,, only the music will fuck you up with the sequel, that worked for me today. cryed like a bitch, thrice
Spoiling that right at the beginning of the review is uncool even if it's revealed at the beginning of the movie. This is information the audience isn't supposed to know going in and finding this out would be quite shocking regardless of when it happens.
It's not a spoiler if it's revealed 15 min in
I just saw it, amazing, and toast you guys for not spoiling it.
Damn they got a real replicant sitting next to coleman for the review
Martin: high matinee; Korey: full price
I always said that Blade Runner was the worst movie that I loved the most now 2049 Takes that prize and I cannot wait to see it again and I guess that I will be conflicted for another 30 years dam
Man, it only took me a couple of views to realize DT reviews are spoilery. I watch every one... After I seen the movie
liked it, didn't feel like I was in the cinema for three hours
I'm So Glag I didnt watch this review before I saw the Film! They kept the fact which Korey just blurted out away from all promo material, and it was a surprise when I saw it in the film. It's still a spoiler even if it does happen at the start of the film!
** WARNING DO NOT WATCH THIS REVIEW IF YOU DO NOT WANT SPOILERS!!!** Issue an apology to the people wanting to see the movie that you spoiled key references to a movie that does not contain any spoilers whatsoever in its trailers!!!! I dont know any other reviewer that hasnt put some type spoiler tag and/or give out some sort of spoiling warning!!!! Now im gonna go in watching this much anticipated movie of mines with an element that would have shocked me. Elements I would not have even guessed and I did see the original Blade Runner in which I loved. Thanks alot....
Grover Williams Well they didn't spoil Ryan's full origin.
Aw fuck. I had no idea about Ryan Gosling. Shouldn't have mentioned that even though they show it at the beginning of the movie... You guys went out of your way to be all criptic and shit for mother! But non-chalantly spill the beans right here... Love you guys, but it just sucks that I had to find that out outside of the movie... Had to stop watching right at that point...
it's revealed in the clips online as well as in the movie at the very beginning in a non surprise way
