I looked into this but it really isn’t worthwhile. It can’t really connect to your phone over Bluetooth to get notifications so it isn’t even a smart watch.
@@benreed4957 Old Pebble watches are breaking down and parts are difficult to find. Also people think they’re still valuable for some reason even though the company has been gone for several years. Compared to the new stuff it’s not worth it. Believe me I wish I had a new Pebble on my wrist right now.
I had a preorder in for the Pebble 2 when they collapsed. My first Pebble Time bit the dust after 5 years. I have a Pebble Time Steel that's going strong two years in but it's really hard to keep it running these days (hard to find the apks, Android and phone app updates break watch apps, etc.). While I don't want to give up Pebble, I know the day will come and I'm always on the lookout for something that has the same functionality without being locked into proprietary ecosystem. (I loved that people could make watch apps and watch faces without any gatekeeping!) NavMe, skunk, and OW Camera are just some of the brilliant apps I love! Basically, me too.
I still miss my pebble but for the last 2 years or so i have been tolerating my amazfit bip. the only good thing about it is the 30-40 day battery life and that it works well enough with gadgetbridge.. (my 2 primary requiremtns...) now that it's battery is dying out, i am really hoping for a pebble replacement. any suggestions welcome.

Glad to see something like this. I had the Pebble since the Kickstarter and was heartbroken after Fitbit bought and shuttered them. I'm hoping this one has the 2 best features of the Pebble: Always on and month-long battery.
It's pretty bulky but the beauty of it not coming assembled is that it's easier to make it more suitable for you. For ex. I would replace the belt with with a textile that's elastic and breathable, maybe make it slide on or use velcro to secure it, also have the battery on the other side. just some ideas
That is just because of the needlessly primitive strap attachment though. Find or make a case with a normal spring pin watch strap attachment design and it'd be far more slick.
For any potential buyers: This is not a conventional smartwatch and currently most definitely not a Pebble replacement. I've had two for more than a year, and they've been collecting dust ever since I got them. There's no phone app and no phone connectivity to show you incoming messages and calls. It's currently only a stand-alone device that connects to a local wifi. There's potential in the hardware. It's just that I haven't seen much progress, if any, over the course of me owning these for more than a year. I'm not complaining, I'm just putting it out there for other potential buyers. So beware!
Well as it is open-source, you can theoretically write your own app for connecting it to the phone and add related functionality to the firmware. *Theoretically*. I understand that not much people even can do that but it can be some interesting device if you know how to modify it.
As someone who still lives by the pebble dream to this day, this is pretty disappointing. My Pebble Time Steel used to go 2 weeks no problem but now only lasts about 5 days so my days with this watch is numbered

the light phone 2 is garbage.....299 us and it doesnt even do anything.......ok i get the whole no social media thing but it still needs to do some stuff like email or a control my music or at least look up the weather or browse the web so i can find out local info .........the light phone 2 should be selling for 50 us and not a penny more.
I literally got one of these last week because of all their beepberry hype, nice one ETA! Initial impressions are pretty good: the Discord is surprisingly active, has lots of helpful advice. That and their documentation have made it pretty easy to jump in.
Pretty cool gadget but I don't see much actual use for most people. Especially with no water resistance. But I'd highly recommend the G Shock GBD-200 which has a screen very similar to e ink (they call it memory in pixel - MIP) and no charging required. Just swap in a big button cell every few years and you're good to go. And it has a step tracker and a backlight and timers etc. Plus it's super tough and very comfy when worn loose.
I actually collected Pebble Time watches after they stopped producing them and had SIX at one point ! Would be great if this was it's spiritual successor.
I understand you doing paid promotions but the absence of any information about the functionality (or lack of) is a little misleading. Can you write code to run on this watch? Yes. Can it function as a smart watch beyond getting weather info or perhaps some stocks and share data over WiFi when you’re at home? No. Most users on the discord server are just creating watch faces for it.

Hope in the future we get more sensors on it, and a mini-led bar on the side to light up the display! But anyway these can easily be addressed by modifications you can do yourself cause it is well documented! Love products like these ^^ Very cool watch.
This is really neat, and if you find any other cool stuff that can be done with this watch, it'd be great to see it! I'm a bit spoiled by my Garmin Instinct, as far as features go, but it would be cool to have something more modular and DIY kickin' around.
I like the design and that's it's e-paper and cheap, though I wish it was less bulky. A regular smartwatch is not for me. Already have enough high tech in my smartphone which I am carrying everywhere, and I need to charge that on a daily basis. Also, I don't know why but I prefer to wear on my wrist a simple two-color screen with only necessary data/notification. I am currently wearing a cheap casio that will go on its battery for like 2 or 3 years, plus I like the simple design and little info it provides. But I can definitely live with once a week charging.
Forget the strap, it has great potential for around the house IOT projects. I have a Lilygo watch that failed as an IOT terminal because of poor battery life, this display should solve this. ESP32/Arduino, almost no limitations.
Oh wow, this looks really great! Ever since the moment I saw those cheap Chinese smart watches being sold I've been wishing for an e-ink watch with customizable faces. This cranks my idea up to eleven! All that it's missing is a small light to illuminate the screen, like in classic LCD watches. Still, I'm gonna try this when I can.
You might be interested in the Pinetime. I "downgraded" from a much more expensive smartwatch, the Pinetime just does everything I need, it's cheap and light. I put it on in the morning and take it off before bed. I have a metal mesh strap, that makes it a lot more comfortable imho.
It has taken way too long for the smartwatch market to push back from the blatant downgrade in smart watch hardware that was introduced by Apple and all the other manufacturers who followed suit with OLED screens and interfaces that don't work on your wrist. It's incredible how much better and more thought out the pebble products were. I sincerely hope this product succeeds and grows into all the capabilities that the pebble watches offered.
I'm happy you drew some attention to this project, because it's a cool piece of hardware and I was really interested in it, but the scene for it seemed pretty dead. Maybe I'll finally get one.
Very cool. I may try to get one. I love my fossil hybrid with e ink display. But something more tinkerable would be fun. I do get a couple weeks battery life on mine though

I want a smartwatch with e-ink display. I am currently rocking the first gen amazfit bip cause i love the always on display that doesn't eat any battery. But they have since stopped using the transreflective display in the newer models. Those beautiful OLED smartwatches sure look gorgeous but damn having to charge a watch everyday is a bummer. a week is the most i'll go with a smartwatch that is always on.
Surprised that the batt life is 7 days and not 7 weeks or something, given how it uses eink display. Would be interesting to find out the max batt life one can squeeze from it with everything off except a timer to refresh the screen once a min or when a button is pressed.
I really hope that we eventually get to the point with e-ink tech that 30-60hz displays are available and inexpensive. I dream of a portable game system capable of playing original gameboy games or arcade games with a battery that lasts for several days.
60hz e-ink displays probably won't have batteries that last for several days in use. The advantage of e-ink is that it only takes energy when it's changing the screen, and 60hz kills that advantage.
There is memory LCDs which combine the refresh rates of normal LCDs, with the always-on feature of e-ink which allows it to be very power efficient when it's not updating the screen. But that wouldn't help for when you're actively using it.
This is really cool. I've been in the market for a new watch and never considered a eink display. I don't enjoy charging every day, and with eink, I can't imagine how long this will last.
I will say, if you want something more traditional, the Amazfit watches are pretty great. My Amazfit GTS4 (with the smaller battery than the GTR4) lasts 4-5 days on battery. That's *with* all the battery-intensive features turned on, such as workout detection, 30-minute GPS-based workouts every day, blood oxygen and stress meters, etc. Worth a look!
@@dylan_00 cool, I check that out! I used to have a Samsung gear fit2 and it lasted about a week on 1 charge and I got spoiled. I now have an apple watch that I have to charge daily, but a watch that lasts longer than 2 days is def worth a look. Thank you!

Basically a programmable watch, awesome. Tinkering with Arduino software. A pitty it has no specific sensors people like to have like a Dosimeter for Radioactive Radiation buildup every day. I still am searching for a watch that has that, they do exist but they are spartan and old. This would be a superb toolset to make that happen.
I dunno, an opensource smart watch had me excited, but this doesn't seem to actually do much, I"m not sure why you'd get this over a standard digital watch, or a more typical smart watch.

I've been looking for a simple watch with a nice e-ink display and step counter for a while now and this looks good except it seems very 'thick' and chunky on the wrist.
instead of E ink they should look at mip displays IMO. Casio has started using it on some of their shock watches and its fantastic. I own a couple of them in my solar watch collection.
Garmin is the master at it. I own an Fenix 6 Saffire which is a true smart watch. With Wifi, HR Tracking and connectivity active 24/7, i get 21 days because of that MIP display it uses. I also NEVER use the backlight because of the displays reflective properties. It also has all the smart watch things including maps and applets.
Test it outside vs a regular lcd watch . When I have a regular lcd watch laying outside the watch will black out until cool almost like those mood 70s ring which has the same material almost. Unless you think it's dangerous.

what would you consider the best pebble replacement as of 2023. i have a fitbit versa2 and while it does ok, the lifespan is still limited.

For those missing the Pebble watch, I have the Fossil Hybrid HR smartwatch. It is a worthy successor to the Pebble. Highly recommended.

Strong Pebble feels from this, got one of those back when they released and the E-Ink is fantastic for a smart watch.
There are a couple of these things on Aliexpress for under $40. They look cool, but the lack of visibility in the dark is concerning.

I made my own with 1.54 with esp32 too. Updating every minute and it goes 3 weeks

@@thesuperzfamilyvlog6607 if you are using iOS, The Apple watch is still going to be your absolute best bet. I just switched over to GrapheneOS from my iPhone and will say I really do miss the Apple Watch :(
@@dylan_00 oh, I switched back to Android, OnePlus 10pro. I've hated the 2 years I had to be on apple, but the apple watch is the best part and what I miss most.
Would like to see a longer case witj the battery below the screen instead of under it. Would make the watch alot thinner.

Can you make your own apps, instead of just a watch face? Could you make a game, like tetris using any of those buttons on that watch?
Basically a programmable watch, awesome. Tinkering with Arduino software. A pitty it has no specific sensors people like to have like a Dosimeter for Radioactive Radiation buildup every day. I still am searching for a watch that has that, they do exist but they are spartan and old. This would be a superb toolset to make that happen.
I dunno, an opensource smart watch had me excited, but this doesn't seem to actually do much, I"m not sure why you'd get this over a standard digital watch, or a more typical smart watch.

I've been looking for a simple watch with a nice e-ink display and step counter for a while now and this looks good except it seems very 'thick' and chunky on the wrist.

instead of E ink they should look at mip displays IMO. Casio has started using it on some of their shock watches and its fantastic. I own a couple of them in my solar watch collection.
Garmin is the master at it. I own an Fenix 6 Saffire which is a true smart watch. With Wifi, HR Tracking and connectivity active 24/7, i get 21 days because of that MIP display it uses. I also NEVER use the backlight because of the displays reflective properties. It also has all the smart watch things including maps and applets.

Test it outside vs a regular lcd watch . When I have a regular lcd watch laying outside the watch will black out until cool almost like those mood 70s ring which has the same material almost. Unless you think it's dangerous.
interesting. e-ink screen could be be a nice a panel for constantly updating text or charts. not willing to pay more than an LCD version though

Not a fan of the case but I really like the screen.
