I will be using this video to teach my students the Pythagorean Theorem. They love football! What a great way to teach the concept and keep them engaged! Go Ben!
2:15 "... 84 hit him. 84?? Tight end??" Love that quote. Utter surprise. Ben Watson was awesome on the Pats, now we get to see what his little brother can do. Welcome to New England, Asa.
It was a tremendous effort by Watson. Hats off to him. Rod Smith had a similar type of play a year earlier in Denver against Carolina chasing down Peppers on a length of the field interception return 😮
I hate the Patriots, and I was always a huge Champ Bailey fan back in the day, but I just replayed the hell outta that tackle! The crash and "Ooooomf!" played over and over again was like music to my ears. That's how you hit a guy! Mad respect for Mr. Watson! 100% effort on every play!
We met Ben at an FCA meeting a couple of years ago in NJ. Nice person and life changing story. Check out the Larry Allen video about hustle: 6-3, 325 lbs catches a linebacker from a dead start.
I dont care if you like the patriots or not, this shit was impressive. Champ bailey was one of the fastest corners in the league an watson ran him down from the opposite side of the field and knocked him out of bounds and swatted the ball out inside the 1 yard line. Give credit where credits due
Agreed. I loved Bailey back in the day, but Watson just personified "all out effort, and never quit (on the play)" with that superb display of athletics. Major kudos to him. Not to mention the "Oof" when they collide is so fucking satisfying!
i can only imagine how Champ Bailey felt --total Nirvana heading for that end zone with an absolute pick 6 going through his mind confident in his speed and skill there's not a person on earth capable of catching him and then *BOOM* like getting hit by a Kenworth Truck
In the part of the clip after Bruschii talks about Ben running 120 yards to get him....they show the skycam view of the whole thing in real speed. This is where you can appreciate the chasedown. Those last 10 yards were incredible. He found a new gear with 10 yards to go and accelerated like a boost on a car. Pretty amazing play.
This is one of my favorite plays of all time. Pure effort. Pure determination. ... And speed, pure speed. Who would have ever though a tight end would cover that much distance that quickly?
One of the plays of my childhood, one of the first plays I remember as a young pats fan (born 2000). Was drunk a few nights ago and memory of it brought tears to my eyes, talking about how beautiful life is. A moment I’ll never forget
@@mattieaflo And yet the Broncos blew up 6 Super Bowls, and Brady got about 7 of them. But hey, pathetic haters always gonna hate for whatever petty, juvenile reason.
I've known about this play for a long time, but I didn't know Benjamin Watson was the guy in it! I just heard my Ravens signed him so I wanted to see some highlights and I find out he did this?! What a freaking cool guy.
Bro if you pause at 1:50 you can see that Bailey's body is fully out of bounds before he has passed the plane of the goal line. At that point the ball has been fumbled and is to the left of bailey, so how could he possibly have fumbled it through the end zone? Key word is THROUGH. I mean I wasn't the best at geometry but I don't see how it can be anything but out at the 1 yard line.
@@decievedthem9589 Champs foot is clearly in bounds as the ball starts to come lose. Your time stamp literally shows that hahahahahahaha. Watch it in .25 speed. He is in bounds as the ball comes lose. How high were you when you made this comment?
+Darius Phillips No, you have to be aware of where you are on the field and always PROTECT THE BALL UNTIL YOU CROSS THE GOAL LINE. He dropped the ball at the perfect moment for Watson to hit it loose.
+G Sici Well you're always gonna know where you are on the field. But you still have to keep running because as I said, you don't know who's behind you because you're not looking behind you.
The next day, a local newspaper reporter had a good comment about this play. He said that no one was expecting Ben to prevent it and had Bailey scored, the LAST thing ANYONE in the world would've demanded is, "Where was Ben Watson on that play?" A great example of playing with pride and giving 100% just because.
I'll go to my grave saying that should of been called a touchback...Bailey has the ball in his right arm and when Watson levels him his left foot hits the pylon and the ball takes a slight forward trajectory. Pats ball on the 20.
If they had the million different replay angles they have today 15 years later, it might have been called a touchback...Changed the entire game. If Brady had just taken a sack and Vinatieri hits a short FG, its 10-9 after 3 quarters and not 17-6!
As a Raider fan, I thought this was a great play. I know this is what it is: a great “effort play.” I believe this represents life. When it looks like you’re in a deep ditch full of setbacks and feel like you’re stuck, you keep grinding anyways and there will come a time where things will look up when you least expect it. Also this play really means a lot to me because it reminds me of my 255 lb Defensive Tackle ass sprinting 55-60 yards after a blocked punt and dive on the ball in the end zone for a TD. “I could of dogged it too and nobody would of said anything about it. I took it as a challenge for myself!!”
I think the telling point is at the 1:50 mark. Hit the pause button there. Notice that the ball is out and Bailey's foot has not contacted the pylon. Now take a straightedge and align it with the pylon. The ball is clearly and fully visible on the left side of the straight edge. There is even a little room to spare. This indicates that the ball went out of bounds before crossing the endzone. Thus, the correct ruling was made in this situation.
That play was absolutely awesome. Shows determination and the will to never ever give up. Benjamin Watson came back to the Patriots in 2019 and then got cut.. I wish they would have kept him
That replay at 2:00 in, WOW. And I found is only bc of what he said about the Ferguson racial demonstrations and divide. Whoooh what a run. I've seriously watched this a couple dozen times.
Watch Troy Brown #80 effort also. Troy put a lot of effort also and deserves credit also for continuing the chase because at 3:00 the Denver blocker turns his attention to #80 which frees up a lane for #84 to torpedo Champ Bailey. That's what the Patriots means when they say everyone is important. Each player doing their job has a cumulative effect.
Happy retirement to you Ben Watson! Thank you for coming back to New England when you knew we needed a tight end! And playing on a torn Achilles most of the season? Sir you are an absolute beast, happy retirement!

Yep, never seen that picture on the wall at Gillette....but it deserves to be there! Unlike when Adam Vinatieri ran down Herschel Walker (who was slowing down when he got caught) in 1996, Champ was still going in a full out sprint when Big Ben Watson arrived on scene. Now THAT is FAST!
Just love this. And credit to John Lynch - while the rest of the Denver D are (quite rightly) congratulating Bailey on sealing the win, Lynch turns to give Watson some credit.
