  • Loma del Rio is a Hohokam ruin located on a hillside in Papago park, in Tempe. It's right next to the Salt River just east of Mill Avenue. This ruin was a small residence which was occupied during the Classic Period, A.D. 1200 - A.D. 1450. It was home to approximately 15 to 20 people belonging to an extended family.
One of the oldest Hohokam Canals is located at this site. Between 500 A.D. to 1450 A.D. Prehistoric Hohokam Indians created an extensive desert valley canal system. Signs of their culture remained through the ruins of their dwellings, unearthed pottery shards and artifacts and carved petroglyphs in nearby rocks.

You find so many neat, out-of-the-way locations to visit and highlight. I love watching your adventures, it makes me want to do more local road trips around my area to see what I can find! :)

I live in Camp Verde. I can give you locations of lots of ruins and petroglyph panels. Most of our canals off the Verde River are actually the ancient canals, the settlers in the 1800's just repaired them and put them back into use.

I love this place, it's my favorite place to walk. One side of the canal smells like earth, the other smells of the creosote bush. It's very calming and healing for me here. Best place in Tempe.

Thank you so much for this video! One of the canals was named in honor of my brother, Brett Hagenstad. The Hagenstad Canal (and also known as canal number 7) is somewhere in the area, but I do not know if it is under the highway or if you can still see some of it.

How fucking depressing lmao! Your videos great but the cars passing in the background just remind me of all the history we’ve paved over. I know it’s stupid to get all sentimental about holes in the ground, but not when there are dead people in them.

That may be why the "crazy" native american guy who seems "unstable" get the cops called on him too often. Other ruins have been found to be burial spots. Super depressing to think about how much has been paved over. Even more that the western concept of time thinks you can't be connected or live in a similar way for thousands of years.

There are tons of ancient Indian ruins all over the metro Phoenix area. The vast majority of the ruins are buried, but I've found pottery sherds and arrowheads in non-descript looking vacant lots within the city of Phoenix. Cool stuff!

Get yourself a hat. And not just any hat. Get a hat with a wide br and make sure the top is made of that nylon kind of material that evaporates water. Occasionally wet it. And for those who are thinking sweat, in the desert, sweat evaporates quickly. I never felt sweaty living in the desert.

I don't buy the Hohokam built the canals explanation, but that get's people pride all bent out of shape as everybody that is 1% native american love to claim some personal link to all this stuff.

What archaeology? All I see is piles of rocks re-arranged by Park staff. Sorry, those rock-lined paths WERE NOT from the Hohokam. And the canal probably dates from the 1890s pioneers. I did not see any outlines of houses.
