- From the National Collection of the NFSA. Made by Australian Sound Films c 1932. A silent promotional film showing the tourist attractions of Beechworth, Victoria, two-time winner of the Sun's Ideal Town competition. Views of the town and surrounds. The gold sluices at Lake Sambell and the reservoir at Lake Kerferd are shown along with an open-air motion picture show at The Rock in Victoria Park. The scenery of the Ovens Valley with views from Mt. Stanley, Mt. Kosciusko, Mt. Buffalo, Mt. Bogong and the Hume Weir. The pine forest nursery. A "Back To Beechworth" procession moves along the main street. The Shire President welcomes visitors. Re-enactments of the Kelly Gang holding up a stage coach in the town and the de Groot ribbon-cutting incident are performed. A motorcycle race is pictured and former Australian Cricket captain Jack Ryder is seen playing cricket at the Baarmutha Park sports ground.

Can you imagine coming to this country back then? Wide open, virtually untouched, a chance to make a whole new life. It may not have been easy but it was a fresh start.
My father lived and grew up in Beechworth as a young boy in the 1920’s as my Grandfather worked for the Bank of NSW there and remember him telling me how much he loved it, he said he loved going down to the Beechworth railway station and watching the steam trains arriving and departing for Wangaratta I think as that is where the branchline to Beechworth originated from, too bad there was no film of the train station

👍🏻 awesome film.. my great grandfather was from Beechworth .. had moved to Canberra by that time..his brother Arthur Millard was a speedway motorcycle rider around this time.. could be him on one of those motorcycles 😳
A beautiful town that has changed very little.
i guess it was a sign of the times, but there was huge mental hospital there and a benevlent home there too, there were not mentioned.. I love this town and it hold very many special memories...

Another little slice of how some things were over ninety years ago.
The DeGroote reference indicates that this was after the Sydney Harbour Bridge opening in March 1932.
0:11 - The title card referred to it as a "Sound Films Production"; is it possible the sound may have been missing from the source material?
The widespread use of detailed caption cards in this suggests that they did not go to the complication and expense of sound recording for this.
Most early sound films I have seen have studio recorded sound and vision or studio narration added later.

My guess is that they intended the other meaning of “sound” for their company name. As in “safe and sound”.
I am curious about the De Groot ribbon cutting reference.
This film clearly predates SH Bridge opening by at least a decade.

Hi Wiley. We have a circa date of 1932 on this film. The Sydney Harbour Bridge was opened in March of that year. The De Groot ribbon cutting would have been a big story at the time - hence the reenactment as a topical event.
