I had the great privilege of seeing Lea in London with the original cast. Jonathan Pryce and Simon Bowman. I fell in love with her then and am still in love with her now. She is awesome. The best Eponine ever and nobody will ever be Kim as well as her.
you prolly dont care but if you guys are stoned like me during the covid times then you can stream pretty much all the latest series on InstaFlixxer. Been streaming with my brother for the last couple of months :)
I had the privilege of seeing Lea in the opening months of Miss Saigon on the West End when I was 8, and again when it premiered in NY a year or two later. She is by far THE BEST Lea, and Simon Bowman was the best Chris...Jonathan Pryce the greatest Engineer. To me, nothing tops that original West End Cast - superb!
Lea gets a lot of praise for playing Kim and that is richly deserved, but there is only one Chris, the fabulous Simon Bowman, he was the first and remains the only one for me ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Why did 22 people dislike this video? Perfect duet and blending of great voices. With decent attires and sweet smiles, they are a good-looking couple. This is real music and true singing; you have every reason to love listening to it over and over.
Sean is handsome and he fits really well with Lea they both have breathtaking voices, it does not matter who Lea's partner is her voice do not fade through the years its just getting more beautiful to hear as the years go by which reminds me of Barbra Streisand she truly deserves to be call the Barbra Streisand of the Philippines!
Loved, loved, loved Sean McDermott as Chris. He was the Chris when Broadway changed Kims from Lea Salonga to Leila Florentino in 1992. Wonder why Salonga didn't sing "I'll go with you!" the way she sang it in the stage version. It's more exciting when Kim sings that line an octave up.
OMGoodness! I just watched this video, knowing it’s been 28 years , when I first came to the United States and Miss Saigon was currently showing at that time in New York. I’m still penniless and just starting my life/career and my American Dream so to speak. But, I had to have a piece of that “ Miss Saigon” fever/mania souvenir and had taken the most significant photo in front of the Broadway 🎭 Theater 🎭. That’s epic! It doesn’t matter who ever sings a duet with Lea, for those gentlemen who had sang with her were all equally fantastic. Just feel the song and listen to the lyrics. Bravo to you all. From Jacksonville Florida USA 🇺🇸🇵🇭
Lea Salonga is what we lose to AI. Her command of her instrument and creativity is something a computer could never create or replicate. She is the best of us, they’re the worst of us (OpenAI etc)
For those making comments about Lea's accent, this is actually her natural accent when speaking in English. She is bilingual but American English is her first language having used it since she was little (and also thinking in English) and getting a lot of training in enunciation from Repertory Philippines where Filipino artists also spoke with an American accent. She is also very articulate since she is quite intelligent (graduating valedictorian in HS). Well, it is only natural for her to imbibe the American accent since the Philippines was colonized by the US so those from the upper class or who got an education from exclusive schools tend to have the American accent or a neutral accent. However, Lea was also a child prodigy and has the ear for accents so she could mimic the British accent brilliantly. In London, she was able to switch to British to blend in.
She's just fantastic, then and now. Re: her fashion taste in her early years.. she was thrown into her career at such an early age that she was wont to wear suits and the like so she would look older than she was. Asian females, especially, could look very young and I would suppose that this is the reason why she would wear "matronly" stuff back then. From an Asian lady who easily looks like a teenager without the "grownup" clothes.
She has such small feet! We have something in common! I had the CD back a few years ago, and I couldn't remembered who played Chris until I heard this. Sean has a really wonderful voice to listen to, and of course Lea is just fantastic. Their voices sound just so well matched. They also look really well together!
@tokki505 i cannot stress how important communication is. part of verbal communication is accent. one has to adopt to its environment and one has to be able to understand and be understood. lea adopting an accent is a MUST. it's not something she invented. it's something she had to do to understand and be understood.
I had the pleasure of attending the final performance of Miss Saigon in Boston as a guest of the cast and got to meet Lea. Also, saw Sean in Showboat at the Marriott Lincolnshire theater in Illinois where I used to live. This is a good song but you should get his album, Piece of the Sky. He does some incredible singing on it. His version of "Music of the Night" puts most of the Phantoms I've seen to shame.
A little bit too much vibrato at the beginning, but their voices blend together beautifully. Sean McDermott is so cute and it is really sexy when he kisses her on the forehead!
she dresses like a mature a woman in a formal attire in those days maybe so that she'll be taken seriously. she is just turning 21 then in this interview, if i'm not mistaken.
It would have been nice if there was a little bit of interaction by Sean toward Lea as Chris would with Kim. He was a trifle stiff and cold but He's so handsome with lovely dimples and it would have been nice and made alot of people and fans of Miss Saigon happy and proud. if he took her hand or even held her close, would have been nice, after all its a love song. Her duet with David Harris was so loving, they kissed lingeringly during and after the song. That's what makes the song what it is, a Love Song and when two people interact, it makes the song more special and gives a deeper meaning to how the two people singing the song feel about what they're singing about. It was beautiful.
@joshgardell I saw Lea Salonga and Jonathan Pryce a week after they won their Tonys in 1991 and that octave change was already frozen in the show. I believe that specific melodic change occurred during the previews in New York so by opening night, Lea was already singing the line that way. My guess is someone felt that Lea and Sean should just do the OLC version for "The Tonight Show."
Just stumbled upon this. Incredible voices (obviously) but the sound quality almost has me believing wind screens had not yet been invented in 1991. Those are some serious plosives going on. Sean even moves the mic away from his mouth right after the first "I have found you..." He probably knew he could stay in the mic's polar pattern but not pop the consonants.
its not unusual for people to pick up accents from where they live. Plus with her diction she probably sounds more English since amercicans usually speak with alot of slang.....Kinda like Madonna

Your comment sir sends shiver down my spine. We all love Lea..

Susan Ariola YESSSS
Sean sings this comfortably and superbly. I've heard others whose voices have sounded just a tad strained. Lea, as usual is marvellous.
For those of you who are hating on her accents - I think it shows real talent that she can switch between accents and sound native. Good for her!
WOW, POWERFUL VOICES.👏👏👏🥂 Luv u Lea, no. 1 Filipina singer from d Phils. and no other.

He sung like full of admiration and respect with Lea

Lea a great performer ever.
I totally agree Lea and Simon's chemistry is through the roof.
Simon Bowman and Lea Salonga are the only Chris and Kim for me. No one could ever come close to these two. They're the best!!
Thita Boonsong what a kind thing to say🙏🙏♥️🙏🙏
Simon deserves all the praise for his performances
He is the very best Chris
Sean also did well here
I totally agree.
Sean was superb, here and in the show.
Totally agree!
I love those little pant suits that Lea used to wear in the early 90s. They made her look more adorable, if that's even possible.
and not to mention those shoulder pads.
I know, right! She’s just too cute.
Watching this in 2024… and this style is back again.
Still watching Lea up to now pandemic 2021 Amazing Lea. Excellent performer. ❤️👏
The best Pilipino singer.A legend.

I listened to miss saigon a million times and reenacted every scene.

This two is so amazing, in Miss Saigon...
i really love this duets.Wow..she's very bright and beautiful.

looking back from lea's vids, she seems ageless and so is her voice. i wish i had her skin. ^_^
I enjoyed the video. Thanks for posting. Lea is great as always.
It's like they're acting as I can see from their eyes. Love it!!
Wow Lea Salonga was sooooo young!
great, rare video! thank you, bdtb, for posting!! it was great seeing lea talk to johnny carson.
Those vintage corded microphones thoughhh LOL.
I'm so proud to be a Filipino...nice job Lea!!!!
sooo beautiful to my ears ! WoW ! 🎶🎉💕💫
Leah and no other❤ she's really the one I admire ..
Her voice became fiercer as she grew old
She's just fantastic, then and now. He’s the Real Deal.
A little bit too much vibrato at the beginning, but their voices blend together beautifully. Sean McDermott is so cute and it is really sexy when he kisses her on the forehead!
Guess it's typical for theatrical singers to have that "extra vibrato" when they sing. lol
she dresses like a mature a woman in a formal attire in those days maybe so that she'll be taken seriously. she is just turning 21 then in this interview, if i'm not mistaken.
atcroccas description says December 1991 so it would be 2 months before Lea’s 21st birthday (Feb 22, 1971).
Watching in 2024. So good!
very nice

lea sounds different here. not her usual high tone... well she was 18 when i heard her recorded version for miss saigon. still she sings beautifully
woot woot!
he sounds kinda like Simon omg
@1419sunnyside thats the early 90's (20 yrs ago), her dress outfit completely acceptable
It's the original Dumboldore and King Arthur. R.I.P. Sir Richard Harris. It's him right?
Lea is so adorable and McDermott was very good.
Her character is 17 at the start at the show and 20 at the end.
her hair n dress ...that's her signature in her time
I'm so glad Broadway/West End singers nowadays don't use so much vibrato anymore!!!!
No it's the original key of B major. The tempo is almost correct too-the background accompaniment is a bit weak-especially the strings. (pitch)
Does anyone have the full interview with Lea? I'd love to see it posted somewhere!
ah Sean McDermott is so beauitufl, but do I really want to google him now, his gotta be like 40+ now
The dimples!! Both of em
@1419sunnyside maybe she had no time to have it altered =) . but I don't care she's amazing and she dresses better now...
Lindo
There is. Miss Saigon Soundtrack
Sean McDermott is rocking that Jimmy Neutron hair
So beautiful, thanks for posting! I don't suppose you have the rest of the interview with Lea Salonga at all?
I'd like to see the full interview as well!
it was the 90s! what do you expect???
wow this guy was amazinf. and need i say anything about lea salonga other than she is a fucking goddess!
Thanks for posting!
Do you have the rest?
its not unusual for people to pick up accents from where they live. Plus with her diction she probably sounds more English since amercicans usually speak with alot of slang.....Kinda like Madonna
hottest chris -3
Why didn’t Doc find a solo saxophone?
@chrzeszczyboczek ...sorry....i know Sean and know the body well....and believe me- it's the full package...talent, personality, looks and .....
"The Tonight Show" guests wears formal dresses during those days. Now they are less formal
