I had a similar situation, I was going home from a wedding at around 12am super tired and sleepy and my phone had turned off, then my husband tells me that my entire family planned a trip together literally the next day. I tried my best to get them to change the trip to another day but they were all too excited and packing their stuff. Me and my husband don’t like fast food so I told them that I’ll cook breakfast and lunch so I put my kids to sleep, packed our suitcases and started cooking literally the ENTIRE NIGHT and told myself that I’ll just sleep in the car since it’s a nine hour drive. I cooked soooo much and I even made a bunch of pita bread which took a lot of time. I didn’t sleep, in the morning I got everything ready and got the kids ready. We were calling and nobody picked up and my husband excused them that their phones were probably on silent and that they were busy getting things in the car. 3 hours later they started calling us back and we’re giving us excuses that they couldn’t come. So we ended up going to the trip alone with sooooo much food. I was sooo upset I asked to stop at a gas station to use the restroom and I went inside and bursted crying because I was so hurt, tired and sleepy.
This hurts me so bad and i’m just a reader. I feel you. Sorry you had to waste so much energy and dedication to a cluelessly unappreciative direction ❤️ I know the feeling

Me and my husband have lots of mutual friends so my parties are always really nice, big or small, but of friends that are only my own I invited 4 total, 2 who live in town 1 that lives 1.5 hrs away and another that lives 5 hrs away +$120 bridge toll for crossing there and back, the two friends from out of town actually showed up when I told them I understood if it was too much, the 2 friends from in town both canceled on me last minute, like during the party. I was so bummed out but now if I do invite them to anything I just message our group chat with the day and time and don't bring it up again, saves me the disappointment. I understand canceling but last minute canceling is the worst.
And that’s why I just go to dinner for my birthday or have a quiet me with my wife and kids, I don’t make time for the disappointment that can happen. All you can do is give a straightforward answer when you’re invited and that’s a yes or a no. Sorry you had to go through that.
Yea I usually just plan to have my birth day just me and my girl and I might go see my mom if she in town at the time. I’ll invite people but no one really ever shows . My job this year did more then anyone . But half my job is family so it counts !!! But I got some happy birth day at least on social media 😂😂

It’s sad with how much effort she put into it but it’s not the end of the world.

To all of you in the comments in pain: My big brother/best friend taught me something. He said once, "Those who want to be there will be there. You shouldn't pay any mind to those who don't." My sweet sixteen, he is the only person who came. My sister who lived with me even made it a point to leave. He was there because he wanted to be. He died a month later. Cherish who you have and forget who you don't. It gets better, I promise. I just turned eighteen and even if barely anyone in my family showed up, I still had some of my people. ❤️

Nah , girl my mom straight up said she would not come to my hostel to get me because of her friends get- together, like I was having desintry and dengue..... When I said it hurt me she was like " i thought you would be happy if you found out your mother was finally getting socialised" ...yeah not when I am literally dying. She came after 3 days since it took time to manage. I had told her to come the next day itself since I was not able to bear it.

My family did this to be once. It wasn't a holiday but I had planned a housewarming for two months, bought a crap ton of food, had games set up, my kids were excited, and it was basically just family. But then my sibling decided they needed to film something for a school project on exactly the same day and time so my entire family bailed on me the morning of so they could be there for my sibling. That was around the time I started seriously considering going no contact
Getting my kids hopes up like that I would have been pissed. The decent thing to do would have been to give a 24 hour notice to say hey we’re doing this instead of coming over sorry to inconvenience you and the kids we’ll do something on another day. So that way you’d have time to prepare yourself mentally to tell your children that what y’all had planned isn’t happening that day but you’d find something else to do that would be fun and they’d be excited about to do with you

This didn’t really happen with me, but I can relate. I work in a retail store, and I had to close that day at my job until midnight. My mom, brother, niece, and moms bf were all enjoying family time, eating the feast I prepared the night before. As I got home, everyone went to sleep, and I just sat in the dining room alone, eating quietly. I cried that day, because I wanted to celebrate with my family. Even last year on thanksgiving, my mom and I celebrated alone but we had each others company. It made me tear up but my mom did wake up and sat with me to give me company, and told me that she was grateful for me 🥲 Edit: y’all are sweet istg- thank you all. T^T NEW EDIT: I finally left that job, so I didn’t miss the rest of the holidays. ❤️
I think I can relate. I got extremely sick on Christmas eve 3 years ago. I had to go to the ER and I cried my heart out to the doctor. I begged him to let me go home between shots of morphine when I was conscious. I was in pain and close to death but I felt like I was missing something important. My family is spread all over the country and I was losing the chance to see them. I was stuck in the ER for 2 weeks and my mom visited everyday. Only a couple other family Members visited but I felt so sad inside. I had put so much effort into celebrations to see all my snacks, appetizers and gifts being left at home.
Girl I did that shift 7 years in a row as a single mom! No one ever wanted to work close on holidays so I always took it because they paid double… so I spent the holiday mornings with the kiddos then they went to their dad and I went off to work to make that double pay baby!😂. It sucked but was well worth it because the paychecks showed it and holidays are expensive as a single Mom and I was able to spoil my kids🥰
I'm sorry if I was there I would of stayed up or got up when u got there I used to work retail and my boss made everyone work on thanksgiving because she said it wasn't fair to give certain people the day off but we didn't work long shifts everyone with kids was off by 1 and everyone without kids worked until 1030 but me being the 1 cooking I had to rush home and finish everything b4 3 so my husband could eat because he had to work 430pm to 430am his job don't even give him Christmas off
One thanksgiving my mom was really sick from cancer so I decided to make all the food for my family’s dinner. I spent the two days before getting out of work and preparing desserts and everything I could when I had time. Then the day of I knew I was super overwhelmed and asked if my siblings could help me with certain things. They all just ignored me and went to my dads while I had to finish everything on my own. I didn’t even eat when they did I felt so used and unappreciated after I was all done. They loved it though.
your face when mom said she wasn’t coming 😞 i send big virtual hugs. i had this happen to my on my 21st birthday. i didn’t even want to go out and celebrate because i preferred to be home with cake and drink a beer with my dad but my coworkers insisted i did something so they suggested a really popular sushi restaurant and i was pretty excited and invited a few other people. the evening comes, i’ve just walked in to put my name down for a table and then calls and texts started coming in that they couldn’t make it. one even tells me it was someone else’s’ birthday and said they were going clubbing and told me to go over there instead. i remember sitting there with the only friend that showed and just had to hold in my tears and call my dad to take me home. i somehow managed not to cry but geez did my chest hurt. i felt so betrayed and no one even apologized. i ended up transferring locations because i felt so embarrassed.
Just experienced this at home. Both my parents cancelled their own birthday treats which i booked prior & had to make plans for them. They didnt tell me they had other plans at the very last minute on the same day. So end up it was all wasted & i never got the sorry that i deserved. Wounds that would never heal 💔
I hope you grant yourself the gift of healing by forgiving them anyway. And then forgive yourself for trusting that they would be there, because they were actually supposed to be there. Forgive them anyway. You deserve a happy heart.

I almost had this situation happen to me I almost bought tickets to a game for my parents (moms bday or Christmas gift) and my dad said they will be back home on the 26th and the game is on Jan 1st but my mom said she was going to be gone that day because she’s going pick up my grandma and it’s a 5hr drive. So look at it this way, next time just communicates with them. I know it’s a surprise but sometimes they end up not knowing and end up planning stuff. So communicate communicate and communicate!!! Please forgive them I know you are livid. I’m sorry that it happened to you!!! I hope you were able to cancel your reservations or at least get your money back.

Sadly I can relate bc this happened to me. Made a whole, huge dinner and my family bailed. This was last year. It was the first year after my Aunt passed away, and she was basically the mom I never had, so it was a rough one. And the few family members who had said they were coming just never showed up. Didnt even call to cancel. Luckily I had my brother and my boyfriend though. Thank God for them! Still really hurt though. Now I celebrate with my boyfriend & his family & I'm so grateful for them!

Did this for a Christmas Party that I invited so many people to and got everyone gifts. My friends were the only ones who came and stayed! Sometimes friends are more like family than your actual relatives. Ik things happen tho.

We don't have Thanksgiving where I'm from, but this made me think about my 14th and 15th birthday. I have always made a point of doing things for people I would want for myself. I would always go to the birthday's of my friends, performances, sleepovers, etc. so when I invited all my friends to my birthday I really thought that they'd come. No one showed. I remember just watching the clock the entire time, cried myself to sleep too. Same thing happened next year. Never really celebrated my birthday again. Y'all showing up matters. (Edit: this is getting so much more attention than I expected it too 😳)
I would of definately came as long as there was cake, no one invited me 😒 My parents never celebrated any of their kids' birthdays, let alone spend money & time on throwing a party for a bunch of kids to come over who didn't have any connection to them or their world. As for you, the only advice I can give you is, don't stare back at the past, just look forward to the future, dream, plan & execute. This truly is your life & you need to draw the path going forward. Stand firm in your decisions & don't let others bring you down with their emotional roller coaster of a life. You are better off without them. Life post school graduation is very different. You will meet people from all walks of life & all age categories & make new friends. Believe me, it's not as scary as one might think. You will instantly grow some years up once you enter those doors & walk the halls. I had to get used to calling professors by their first name or surname, whichever they preferred 🤭

@Aas why are you getting so mad at her. No one’s saying her mom is a “bad” mom or “crappy” mom. Also, she doesn’t owe any of us an explanation’s as to why they cancelled. She was just hurt that it happened. Obviously she doesn’t hate her mom or think she’s a shitty person but sometimes life happens. No one in this scenario is a bad person. It’s sad with how much effort she put into it but it’s not the end of the world.

My sweet sixteen, he is the only person who came. My sister who lived with me even made it a point to leave. He was there because he wanted to be. He died a month later. As a mom, I can’t imagine canceling Thanksgiving dinner on my baby girl at the last minute. Hopefully her mom will make up for it this year.
Nah , girl my mom straight up said she would not come to my hostel to get me because of her friends get- together, like I was having desintry and dengue..... When I said it hurt me she was like " i thought you would be happy if you found out your mother was finally getting socialised" ...yeah not when I am literally dying. She came after 3 days since it took time to manage. I had told her to come the next day itself since I was not able to bear it.

It wasn't a holiday but I had planned a housewarming for two months, bought a crap ton of food, had games set up, my kids were excited, and it was basically just family. But then my sibling decided they needed to film something for a school project on exactly the same day and time so my entire family bailed on me the morning of so they could be there for my sibling. That was around the time I started seriously considering going no contact

The decent thing to do would have been to give a 24 hour notice to say hey we’re doing this instead of coming over sorry to inconvenience you and the kids we’ll do something on another day. So that way you’d have time to prepare yourself mentally to tell your children that what y’all had planned isn’t happening that day but you’d find something else to do that would be fun and they’d be excited about to do with you

This didn’t really happen with me, but I can relate. I work in a retail store, and I had to close that day at my job until midnight. My mom, brother, niece, and moms bf were all enjoying family time, eating the feast I prepared the night before. As I got home, everyone went to sleep, and I just sat in the dining room alone, eating quietly. I cried that day, because I wanted to celebrate with my family. Even last year on thanksgiving, my mom and I celebrated alone but we had each others company. It made me tear up but my mom did wake up and sat with me to give me company, and told me that she was grateful for me 🥲

I think I can relate. I got extremely sick on Christmas eve 3 years ago. I had to go to the ER and I cried my heart out to the doctor. I begged him to let me go home between shots of morphine when I was conscious. I was in pain and close to death but I felt like I was missing something important. My family is spread all over the country and I was losing the chance to see them. I was stuck in the ER for 2 weeks and my mom visited everyday. Only a couple other family Members visited but I felt so sad inside. I had put so much effort into celebrations to see all my snacks, appetizers and gifts being left at home.

Girl I did that shift 7 years in a row as a single mom! No one ever wanted to work close on holidays so I always took it because they paid double… so I spent the holiday mornings with the kiddos then they went to their dad and I went off to work to make that double pay baby!😂. It sucked but was well worth it because the paychecks showed it and holidays are expensive as a single

I'm sorry if I was there I would of stayed up or got up when u got there I used to work retail and my boss made everyone work on thanksgiving because she said it wasn't fair to give certain people the day off but we didn't work long shifts everyone with kids was off by 1 and everyone without kids worked until 1030 but me being the 1 cooking I had to rush home and finish everything b4 3 so my husband could eat because he had to work 430pm to 430am his job don't even give him Christmas off

One thanksgiving my mom was really sick from cancer so I decided to make all the food for my family’s dinner. I spent the two days before getting out of work and preparing desserts and everything I could when I had time. Then the day of I knew I was super overwhelmed and asked if my siblings could help me with certain things. They all just ignored me and went to my dads while I had to finish everything on my own. I didn’t even eat when they did I felt so used and unappreciated after I was all done. They loved it though.
That would be forever be the last day I cook or do ANY favors for the fam! Theres no excuse for ignoring you then eating without even a thank you

your face when mom said she wasn’t coming 😞 i send big virtual hugs. i had this happen to my on my 21st birthday. i didn’t even want to go out and celebrate because i preferred to be home with cake and drink a beer with my dad but my coworkers insisted i did something so they suggested a really popular sushi restaurant and i was pretty excited and invited a few other people. the evening comes, i’ve just walked in to put my name down for a table and then calls and texts started coming in that they couldn’t make it. one even tells me it was someone else’s’ birthday and said they were going clubbing and told me to go over there instead. i remember sitting there with the only friend that showed and just had to hold in my tears and call my dad to take me home. i somehow managed not to cry but geez did my chest hurt. i felt so betrayed and no one even apologized. i ended up transferring locations because i felt so embarrassed.

Just experienced this at home. Both my parents cancelled their own birthday treats which i booked prior & had to make plans for them. They didnt tell me they had other plans at the very last minute on the same day. So end up it was all wasted & i never got the sorry that i deserved. Wounds that would never heal 💔

I almost had this situation happen to me I almost bought tickets to a game for my parents (moms bday or Christmas gift) and my dad said they will be back home on the 26th and the game is on Jan 1st but my mom said she was going to be gone that day because she’s going pick up my grandma and it’s a 5hr drive. So look at it this way, next time just communicates with them. I know it’s a surprise but sometimes they end up not knowing and end up planning stuff. So communicate communicate and communicate!!!

Sadly I can relate bc this happened to me. Made a whole, huge dinner and my family bailed. This was last year. It was the first year after my Aunt passed away, and she was basically the mom I never had, so it was a rough one. And the few family members who had said they were coming just never showed up. Didnt even call to cancel. Luckily I had my brother and my boyfriend though. Thank God for them! Still really hurt though. Now I celebrate with my boyfriend & his family & I'm so grateful for them!

We don't have Thanksgiving where I'm from, but this made me think about my 14th and 15th birthday.
I have always made a point of doing things for people I would want for myself. I would always go to the birthday's of my friends, performances, sleepovers, etc. so when I invited all my friends to my birthday I really thought that they'd come.
No one showed. I remember just watching the clock the entire time, cried myself to sleep too.
Same thing happened next year. Never really celebrated my birthday again.

I would of definately came as long as there was cake, no one invited me 😒 My parents never celebrated any of their kids' birthdays, let alone spend money & time on throwing a party for a bunch of kids to come over who didn't have any connection to them or their world. As for you, the only advice I can give you is, don't stare back at the past, just look forward to the future, dream, plan & execute. This truly is your life & you need to draw the path going forward. Stand firm in your decisions & don't let others bring you down with their emotional roller coaster of a life. You are better off without them. Life post school graduation is very different. You will meet people from all walks of life & all age categories & make new friends. Believe me, it's not as scary as one might think. You will instantly grow some years up once you enter those doors & walk the halls. I had to get used to calling professors by their first name or surname, whichever they preferred 🤭
