I have seen this band four times and they are the real deal. Many of us consider Band-Maid to be the very best hard rock band of the 21st century. Not only do they play every bit of music you hear whether prerecorded or not they also write, arrange, produce it as well. There are NO outside musicians as there is no Rick Rubens or Phil Spector in the recording studio. What you see is what you get. And then some. They have just finished their current North America tour with the final show in Mexico City just two weeks ago. At the Ace of Spades midtown Sacramento l also got to hear the first public performance of Shambles which was a treat. Band-Maid does not make bad music but then again neither do many of their contemporaries. You absolutely need to hear Lovebites and Nemophila as well. Many others but these two will send you down the rabbit hole head first. Band-Maid is hard rock. Lovebites is symphonic rock with a lead guitarist who would be able to play classical music with the world's best symphonies. You should hear her do Chopin's Etude as a prelude to a rock masterpiece. And finally Nemophila who refer to themselves as the "warm and fuzzy band from hell". The singer there, Mayu, can switch between clean and screaming vocals with the best who have ever been. And when you are satisfied with that l have another ten for you. Rock music never died. It just moved to Japan. Something Marty Feldman of Megadeth knew when he left that band to live and play music full time in Japan. Regards.

Their music has to be heard before a live audience in order to get a true appreciation as to just how breathtakingly great these ladies are in performance. There will be many recommendations from their legions of fans, but I'll recommend their official live songs "Domination" or "Puzzle." Please feature more of the outstanding Band-Maid on your channel. A lot of casual or uninformed music "fans" think that an instrumental song is just the band jamming with no real plan, with is about as far from the truth as it can be. Even if you go back to the beginning with bands The Ventures and The Shadows, their songs were carefully written compositions. Brian Wilson composed one of the finest instrumentals of all time in Half Moon Bay. And Kanami is just amazing in her complex compositions like From Now On, Onset, Without Holding Back and others like them.

I believe so did many of American audience in their recent three US tours. This song has been normally played in the middle of the setlist to give Saiki, lead vocalist, some break. They played this song, however, as an opening at festivals and in Guns N' Roses concert in Japan as support to the legendary band. Yeah! they showed off their skills and talents to the audience who knew nothing about the girls in maid outfit on the stage. I felt as if I heard them screaming "Hey guys! If you wonder if they are playing,
I recommend watching Onset live and Without Holding Back.
Especially the one called the white room version of WithoutHoldingBack.
This video is shot in a white room, concentrating only on their instrumental performances.
They are each very good instrumentalists, but that's not all. Their overall ability is amazing.
BAND-MAID's songs are basically made with the assumption that they will be performed live. They consider themselves a live band.
First, lead guitarist KANAMI composed the song, and each part member arranged it individually.
Rhythm guitarist MIKU writes the lyrics.
The final decision will be made by main vocalist SAIKI.
Backing tracks such as synth parts are made by lead guitarist and main composer KANAMI.
And instrumentals like this one were written to give the vocalist a break during a long gig.

Nice. I thought it was about the best thing I'd heard when I found it too. I saw them play this live in a club in Austin Texas in May. They nailed it. And played over 20 other songs with complex arrangements. The drummer and bass player are monsters. The lead guitar/composer is brilliant, and the vocals are killer. I was amazed. I haven't found a decent live recording of this song. If you want to hear them play something really difficult live, check out Black Hole. It's in a two song video with a laid back rock song, Manners. So, load up Manner, Black Hole Official Live video and if you want to skip Manners go to about 4:10 and check out Black Hole. It's particularly interesting because the vocalists are involved in the complex arrangement. Both have great sense of rhythm, time, and dynamics so it's as if you have two more instruments.

Hi Harri! Band-Maid are the best hard rock band I have heard in my 56 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive 10 year back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and bad-ass musicians to boot. I'm from the UK but I am travelling to Japan in October as I have tickets for four shows there as part of their 10th anniversary tour. They are the only band I would even consider traveling across the globe to see live.
Saiki the lead singer has had throat surgery in the past so the band are very careful with her voice. They play 2+ hour shows so to give Saiki a break around mid-set they do three things. 1. Play an instrumental, 2. Miku (rhythm guitar) takes lead vocals for a song or two (she has a track usually once per album where she is lead vocalist) and 3. Miku will do her legendary and hilarious "Magic Time" MC set. Then Saiki comes back on to finish the set. So yeah, they have a number of really cool instrumental tracks. Check out the live MV of "Onset" for another instrumental banger!

This is one of the most individually talented group of musicians I've come across in my 55 years of listening. They also write, compose and perform their material. I would suggest ANY of their official live music videos...but my favorite live versions are "Domination", "Freedom", "Puzzle", and "Manners" as they all have sections added that aren't on the studio versions. "Freedom" live would be heavily favored by drummers for the footage...and the vocalist (Saiki) is top tier as well.

Great reaction. We definitely see what you see and hear what you hear. Band-Maid is even better live. They also are very fun live with their audience participation called Omajinai Time or Magic Spell Time. They play their own instruments live. The only caveat is the lead guitar player Kanami plays keyboards so if there are any keyboards live they are a backing track. They do often add to their songs when played live. They have extended intros in several songs live.

If you like hard rock and being happy, you just hit the music lottery. 🎉
Band Maid is absolutely playing everything you hear. Even the background synths; Kanami (lead guitarist) has played piano since age 3. Akane (drums) also plays piano (and trombone!?)
The girls came together naturally and coincidentally. And the world of music has become a better place.
Live video of the Maids is abundant. Because they call their concerts “servings,” they have that attitude of putting the audience first. They give it their all, every time, every song.
Japanese culture is one of precision and punctuality. Band Maid live performances are always equal to, often superior to, their album cuts.
“Play,” official live video is a good introductory song. It was also written as an instrumental; however, lead vocalist Saiki loved it so much she asked Miku (rhythm guitar/vocals) to write lyrics.

I have seen them live twice, and they are THE REAL DEAL. If you choose to dig deeper, you will find that they do not have a bad song. Did I mention how talented they are? Well dive in, you will find out.

Yesssss, they're absolutely the real deal.....I've seen them 6 times now, and they just keep getting better. They have a well earned reputation in Japan of being a band you have to see live to appreciate. Should be lots of fan-cams to the most recent US tour in May & August, recommend the Welcome to Rockville set or Lollapalooza (either the after-show or main stage set) or just recently I saw them in Sacramento, Aces of Spades club (amazzzzing show....and stinking hot that day, lol)

Excuse me, you wondered if they were really playing the music. If you watch the fingering and the drumming during the video, one should notice the accuracy of the performance. Hence, the question, why would someone fake it when they obviously have the talent to play it for real. Yes, sir, I've seen them perform their music live and they are the real deal. Thank you for reacting to this amazing five-member band from Japan known as BAND-MAID.

When ‘Thrill’ went viral a lot of people were lining up saying the Maids weren’t playing their instruments. Their focus is, “I will do my best,” when on stage and writing music for their fans. Watch some videos of their recent tour and you will understand why Maidiacs attend as many shows as possible.

Yes, I remember the early days, so many called them a gimmick and not real. Don't hear too much from those guys anymore, wonder why. Band Maid is absolutely for real and a force to be reckoned with. Getting better everyday, they have come so far.

100% agree. Band-Maid are one-of-a-kind good. Live they are both flawless technicians and fun, soulful rockstars all at once and it's all wrapped up in a quiet humility as they aim their sights squarely on World Domination. No band has ever made me want to be a *fan* like Band-Maid.

It's all them. They do it all themselves. They play "From Now On" at every full concert, only omitting it at short Festival sets. Yes, they do use a backing track: they include piano, orchestral synth, electronic drums, distorted vocals, which they perform and produce themselves. BTW: their vocalists are excellent and don't auto-tune. Their lead guitar, Kanami Tono is an excellent keyboard player. She and the bassist, Misa, have played piano since pre-school. Their live recordings are generally better than their studio recordings. Live, they are energy monsters on stage and they know how to engage an audience. Watch their 2023 Lollapalooza set: it's an hour of non-stop energy. The set starts with "From Now On" and it just gets better: wait for the guitar-bass duel in "Hate?", it's rock-n-roll history.
Band-Maid has fought tooth and polished fingernail for everything they have accomplished. For the past several years they have composed, arranged, recorded, and produced all their recordings pretty much under their own direction. They have complete artistic control and also quite a bit of managerial control. Band-Maid has that Punk Rock DIY mentality: they have a business plan and stick to it, taking responsibility and accountability for every aspect of their business, and every band member has a business role and participates. Keep listening to Band-Maid and they will eventually astonish you.

Maybe it's time to meet 5 beautiful ladies in high heels and dresses playing classic heavy metal? For starters, I recommend the song Break the Wall from their earlier albums. Boasting over 70 hit singles, they won Best New Metal Band at the Metal Hammer Awards in 2018. The girls play heavy, thrash, power and prog metal, they also have some beautiful ballads. This is perhaps one of a few tracks that has used some studio tricks. The opening and piano are overdubbed. Kanami the lead guitarist is a trained concert pianist. It's all them. And since their first couple of albums, Kanami has written most of this music, with Miku writing the lyrics but they are all such fantastic musicians that allows music of this level to be written because they can perform it. Kanami makes these these drum parts possible. Misa makes those bass lines possible.

Some of the best drummers, guitarists, pianists, violinists, etc., are women. The ladies would say, "Oh-oh there they go again, still having those questions and doubts ... "

They have complete control of their music. The lead guitarist, Kanami is the prime composer and the Rhythm Guitarist, Miku is the prime lyricist and the Band Founder. They are better LIVE!!
    CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
The Japanese rock act is the quintessential example of not judging a book (or a band) by its cover. Inspired by everyone from Carlos Santana to Deep Purple and Smashing Pumpkins, but looking like demure movie characters, Band-Maid is a total exploration of contrast, and about as shock rock as you can be nowadays - not for the blood and gore of, say, GWAR, but for the immediate hypnosis they impart. - Selena Fragassi
    ROLLING STONE
Japanese Rockers Band-Maid Put Guitar Center Showoffs to Shame
There’s a pun to be made about how much Band-Maid ripped, but the Japanese group goes even harder than that. Fluctuating between hard rock, aughts nu-metal, and pop rock, each member of the quintet is a virtuoso in her own right with more than a decade of practice in Band-Maid alone. They lured curious onlookers into the fold when highlights like “Domination” and “Don’t You Tell Me” got huge reactions from the crowd, but it was the bass solo-versus-guitar solo duels mid-song that got the biggest cheers. This is what those guys in Guitar Center think their ridiculous riffing sounds like. Turns out it’s done best, and most effortlessly, by women in black-and-white maid dresses and frilly hair-pieces as they smile ear to ear. -N.C.

They opened their set at Lollapalooza with *"from now on"* last August 4th: ruclips.net/video/N_HyA-0Duh8/видео.htmlsi=n9_gSH0OdB5Y8d-h (this is a bass-centric fan cam, and yes you need to hear the bassist). They usually play this (or another instrumental) mid-set to give the singer a break. There are piano and synths in the backing track and they're probably played by the guitarist and songwriter Kanami Tōno. Why wouldn't they be? She's played piano much longer than guitar. They _are_ that good, and you'll see it and hear it over and over and over again.

Not only do they play all their own stuff, but all the instruments in the backing tracks, Synths, Piano etc... are played by Lead Guitarist, Kanami as well. The Drummer Akane and Bassist MISA met at the Tokyo School of Music. There is nothing that they can't play. Check out another instrumental of theirs 'Without Holding Back'.

The only one of the members of Band-Maid who has ever "faked" it was Miku (rhythm guitar). She thought that she'd only be a singer when she started to put together the group, but when Saiki joined as singer, Kanami (lead guitar) began teaching Miku to play the guitar. So Miku had to fake it some at the very beginning, but has now had 10 years to get fully proficient at guitar and she seems to be genuinely able to keep up with the others at this point.

Band-Maid are real musicians. They can pull this stuff off live on any given day. I won't lie to you as they do utilize some backing tracks for various parts of songs, mainly keyboards, various other non guitar bass and drum instrument sounds, and yes Band-Maid fans even some backing vocals as only two of the girls regularly sing and you will sometimes hear more singing than that going on at once. That does not detract from the superb skills of these 5 ladies. Check out some of their Official Live Videos from their RUclips page. I would recommend Play, Manners / Black Hole, and No God. There are two live versions of No God. The version from 2 years ago is my favorite but both are awesome. Give some more of their stuff a listen and let us know what you think of it.

Harri, welcome back to the Band of Maids, the best rock group on the planet. If and when they come to England you HAVE to see them. It's not just a band, it's an EXPERIENCE like none other in music today. There is literally no one like them. Lead guitarist Kanami Tono is also the composer on their original songs and both Miku and Saiki work on the lyrics. I have also heard that Saiki is looking to, learn to play guitar, just like Miku did, and she can have no better sensei than Kanami, who is also a musical savant on a Mozart-like level and can be called Japan's Brian Wilson. I know you have already reacted to the official live video of Domination, but there are soooooooo many other great songs for you to delve into. If you want to see where it all began, react to the official music video for "Thrill", which saved the band from breaking up when their management was going to drop them. They posted Thrill on RUclips and got unimaginable numbers of views and got that train rolling. They literally have a global fan base that love them and the feeling is reciprocated by them in every performance they do. I'm a 76 year old rocker who has been following rock since the late 1950's and this is the freshest and most enjoyable band I've seen since the glory days of the 60's and 70's. I'm usually the oldest one at any of the shows I go to, lol.

In my haste I forgot to mention the other two members of the band, bassist Misa Misa Misa "The Barefoot Assassin" and Akane "The Gorilla" Hirose, drummer extraordinaire and band leader. When Kanami finishes one of her compositions, it goes to Akane and Misa to plan everything out and then back to Kanami to insert solos. They are one-stop shopping when it comes to music, lol. And to show you how they really feel about their fans, during the 2022 US Tour Kanami had some physical issues that made the trip tough on her but she pushed through was awesome. In addition, while their tour bus was plying the turnpikes of the US, Kanami took the time to write a new song, an homage to their fans called Memorable. That's why there isn't another band like them on the planet.
