Second, actually. His first layer of immortality was practicing forbidden Daoist teachings and magic under Puti Zushi, earning him the name of Sun Wukong, which means "The Monkey Awakened to the Void." His third layer of immortality was drinking the Wine of the Immortals during the feast of the Jade Emperor. His sixth layer of immortality came from eating a Ginseng Fruit during his pilgrimage with Tripitaka, as well as reaching the Journey to the West's destination, where they consumed the Buddhist equivalent of the immortality granting foods of the Jade Emperor, which was his seventh layer of immortality. His final layer was given to him when he attained his title of The Victorious Fighting Buddha, making a total of eight layers, much like the Eight Paths of Daoism.

FYI, before the magical staff ( 金箍棒 ) had been transformed and taken, the staff originally a big needle ( 定海神铁 )isn't measure the depth of the sea but to control the water of the sea so that it wouldn't be a big flood happen.
For those that know about the Dragon Ball series anime, this is what the Goku story is inspired by. Sun Wukong, Son Goku, get it? Goku had a staff that extended in the early Dragon ball series (and less used later in Dragon Ball Z, GT, Super serious)
As stated in the OSP(Overly Sarcastic Productions) video(And a lot of others), Sun Wukong had a form of immortality from the Taoist sage who trained him before he bashed his way to the ten Death Lords. So, he's doubly immortal when he exits The Underworld. But in the wise words of Billy Mays: "But wait, there's more."
Ryuji’s ultimate persona in Persona 5 ! :D (In case you don’t know, all members’ ultimate personas are legendary rebels and troublemakers from mythology who flaunt the rules and went against Gods. In the book, Wukong literally fought the entire heavens all by himself)

This gives it quite a different tone than in the actual story, at least in the translation I read (Arthur Waley's), where it felt more absurd and funny than dramatic. First thing Monkey did was kill those two guys carrying him to the underworld. Then he just started wreaking havoc until the 10 judges came out trying to appease him. They tried to say there must've been some kinda mistake, after which Monkey proceeded to casually scratch out his and any of his subjects' names he could find from their ledgers. The whole thing was barely even 1 chapter long.
I thought he was already immortal prior to learning the way of earthly multitudes. Although he did become immortal like 4 times with the peaches, heaven wine, and immortality pills so maybe I just lost track
@Simz Zxy by eating every god damn item he could, later on the gods try boiling him in a stew using a specific method used to remove immortality and then kill them. The monkey king was so immortal (having used almost every method of achieving it) that it had no effect.
@Simz Zxy like how Chinese mythologies have different layers of the heaven (33 layers) with each layer harder to breach, immortality also have a bit of a level up and differences. U can have immortality to live forever and did something seriously wrong (in the case of SWK where he wrecked the east sea palace) so have the death enforcers specifically to chase after you. Then you can have immortality without any death enforcers chasing after you, but possible to be killed by another immortal in a fight. Third one (if I ain't wrong) is invulnerability and unable to be killed at all even if you're old af or burn, shocked, beheaded etc. The highest one is omnipotence and complete control, which if I am not wrong only one top tier god (Buddha or HongJun, unclear who) has it.
so my teacher used to tell about his other perspective on the Journey to the West: Wukong: people with gifted abilities to overcome anything yet stuck in following commands of powerful figures, only to be called out to solve the problems. Xuanzang: people with authority and power in hand yet incompetent, blinded and constantly misjudged the situations, leading to their own demise. Bajie: Bane of the society, people who are weak and constantly indulged in their own sins but when time comes they are no where to be found. When being brought out to be judged however, they would be the slimiest tongues to slip out of the situation, most notably talking sweet to people with authority for help and defense. Wujing: mindless drones without opinion of themselves who would follow orders without fault and in charge of taking care of most of the lowest jobs as told.

The whole first part of Journey to the West is just "Sun Wukong exists and everyone else has to deal with it"
OSP fans: Hey, I’ve seen this one, this one is a classic!
Ted Ed: what do you mean you’ve seen it? it’s brand new!
Extra Credits fans: Me too!

DID SOMEBODY SAY IMPULSIVE?
It’s a really long story. I’d say this part is somewhere in the middle. There’s an origin story of how he was born and gain his powers. And the ending part is his journey to the west, which is an entire saga itself.
No this part is the start, and half of the content are false
Woah... For just a second I thought this was the next video of journey to the west from overly sarcastic productions...
As always the quality is over the top😍
FYI, before the magical staff ( 金箍棒 ) had been transformed and taken, the staff originally a big needle ( 定海神铁 )isn't measure the depth of the sea but to control the water of the sea so that it wouldn't be a big flood happen.

I love the tale of The Monkey King! I try to watch every movie and read about his adventures
I used to watch shows about him as a kid in China, often asking for my grandmother’s stories, this one came up quite a lot
"Nothing in this world is difficult but thinking makes it seems so" - Wu Cheng'en
The animation and art style is really lovely here! Great inspiration.
Kratos: “could this be... one of my people?”
Sun WuKong is practically the definition of my childhood lmao
You forgot an important detail: He had sought immirtality, and as far as he knew had achieved it. That was part of why he made such a fuss.
Sun Wukong was so oblivious and was actually nice until he found out heaven had an entire campaign against him
Am i the only one who love Imperial China and their Ancients stories and histories than the modern day China

Who is here because they binged all the videos from Overly Sarcastic Productions
For those that know about the Dragon Ball series anime, this is what the Goku story is inspired by. Sun Wukong, Son Goku, get it?
Goku had a staff that extended in the early Dragon ball series (and less used later in Dragon Ball Z, GT, Super serious)
Another fun fact, the Japanese name for Sun wukong is 孫悟空, or Songoku. Just add a space and there you go
Wow. Ted what are you doing with these upgrades to your content...WE LOVE IT!!!!!!!!
He literally has like 100k layers of immortality plus boundless strength, speed, and wisdom
Ted-ed: uploads video about the monkey king
People who watch overly sarcastic productions: I'm seven dimesions ahead of you
People who has watched the TV series or read the orginal books : " I am 14 dimensions ahead of you "
The animation is one of your greatest yet, and beautiful storytelling as well!
Now he is immortal and we can see him in numerous games.
Ryuji’s ultimate persona in Persona 5 ! :D
(In case you don’t know, all members’ ultimate personas are legendary rebels and troublemakers from mythology who flaunt the rules and went against Gods. In the book, Wukong literally fought the entire heavens all by himself)
Will they ever show Ted?
You know, I'd like to see Ted, when are they going to tell us who he is?

@@Bluepizza1684 that's an idea smarter than my reply. I applaud your use of your brain. :)
The actual one is already on your TV
Terrible translation
That is one of the four ways that the monkey king becomes immortal.
This guy is stupidly overpowered. And we love him for that
this is the best definition of "monkeying around".

The shadow puppetry style is amazing
Sun Wu Kong is a G for that.
Not only made himself immortal but also his squad
so my teacher used to tell about his other perspective on the Journey to the West:
Wukong: people with gifted abilities to overcome anything yet stuck in following commands of powerful figures, only to be called out to solve the problems.
Wujing: mindless drones without opinion of themselves who would follow orders without fault and in charge of taking care of most of the lowest jobs as told.
i mean, wukong straight up wrecked heavens like 5 times, so i dont really know if he's stuck in following commands of powerful figures

I like how the video represents the characters as puppets, which was how this story used to be told in ancient Chinese times up till today.
👑🐒 This is the first time, I heard this kinda story of Sun Wukong. The mostly version of story I heard / watched, was the tale of *#JourneyToTheWest* . Where he was accompanied the monk and some several others repentance demons to go to India, and retrieve the Holy Sutra of Buddha.
Yet, this add another story to the whole chapters of Sun Wukong story.
Thank you 💐😊💕
