Baseball has the most extensive developmental ladder of pro team sports but are behind hockey, football and basketball when it comes to the salaries of minor leaguers. The sad thing is that MLB teams can easily afford to pay them all a living wage but have been fighting tooth and nail not to. The structure needs to drastically change.

Living wage? 25 k per year

i guess the other sports get more because there's more physical contact between the players.

Back in college (around 2003 or so) I worked as a delivery driver at Papa John’s. And, one of my fellow drivers was a low A ball player, and he was there during the offseason, and would go off to play during the season. He basically explained how little minor leaguers get paid, and it honestly seemed crazy to me. Of course, I didn’t expect them to be getting hundreds of thousands of dollars, but below minimum wage just seems criminal to me.

Honestly the rules should be if they get paid below minimum wage then the league MUST provide housing, otherwise they have to be paid a real wage

When I was going through the farm system, during the off season I spent hundreds of hours in front of a mirror working on my pitching mechanics.

Matt you should interview a current minor leaguer sometime soon! I think you'd ask some great questions and it would give us all a cool insight into the finances, the grind, the new technology and numbers that players are dealing with. Plus sharing some of the classic stories is always fun.

Matt can you do a video on how to coach your own kids at home and with their team? Maybe the best tips you’ve learned over the years. I think a lot of your viewers are dads who coach. Thanks

A federal judge ruled that minor leaguers are year-round employees who work during training time and found Major League Baseball violated Arizona state minimum wage law and is liable for triple damages.

They should be considered year round employees this is a no brainer.

My son is new to MiLB. The food has been very good and lodging decent. He has been able to save most months but doesn’t get paid for November and December. With the signing bonus he’s not doing too bad for a teenager. So much better than the old days. This is due largely to unionization is my understanding.

I can understand the argument but those training and strength conditioning and also training for specific position should not be counted as part of the job of a professional baseball player similar to a regular job.
For example, a teacher that wants to improve the teaching skill / get a higher degree have to do them without getting any extra pay by the employers.

I hear you. And I feel teachers should be paid more than they currently are. But are some teachers only getting paid $10,000 a year to teach?

    • @chucknola484
      @chucknola484 Год назад

If Teachers were making less than minimum wage for the school year and then taking extra classes over summer to get a better degree in order to “get promoted” to making a living wage this analogy would be spot on.

Chief Magistrate Judge Joseph C. Spero in San Francisco also ruled MLB did not comply with California wage statement requirements, awarding $1,882,650 in penalties

Congress enacted the Save America’s Pastime Act in March 2018, which amended the FLSA to exempt baseball players from the statute’s minimum wage and overtime requirements

I feel like it would do wonders for the game if minor leaguers are paid more. You want to increase the level of competition across the board and give them all the resources they need to both train their bodies and earn a living. I wonder how things will change now that this past fall apparently all minor league players have been added to the MLBPA. The MLBPA will have to balance the interests of the major leaguers with the minor leaguers. I read somewhere that it would only cost major league teams $4 million a year to triple the salaries of minor leaguers in their farm system

Watching the MLB draft and just realized now there is a pick value so like 1st pick was almost 10 million. What does that refer to?

I think that our local summer college league players don't get paid but do get housing and some meals. Is that your experience at that level, Matt?

  • @Punkologist

That's crazy to hear. Can't imagine how players survive day to day on such low wages. I assume the clubs are making money from ticket sales and merch.

Most minor league clubs are not doing well. It’s incredibly hard to get large crowds to come out nearly everyday and spend lots of money. It’s always been a huge struggle.

Yeah no tv average small crowds but u would think they could give the mlb guys 250 mill instead on 300 mill contracts and better fund the minor clubs .. .. I try not to support pro sports it’s just to outta whack
