  • Picked up this handyman's special for dirt cheap cuz the belts were smokin' badly. Turns out the variable speed drive pulley was seized up, so I rebuilt the pulley and it's almost good as new.
I'm no mechanic and I'm not the best with these videos but I can at least give you an idea what you are up against.
Here is a link to the needle bearings and pully (I get nothing for the click, just adding a link)

Thanks for the video, but I have two questions: how do you lubricate these new needle rollers each year and secondly how do you lubricate the middle loose sheave of the pulley that slides and rotates? My MTD has the 'long version' of the variable pulley and the middle sheave is on a sleeve and slides up and down but has siezed. Thanks

I really appreciate you showing how you replace the bearings. It would be helpful if you were to mention what year your MTD yard machine was. Mine looks similar, but it's a smaller 38 inch cut. Model made between 2000 & 2003.

I got about 30 of the old VSP units that I dipped in used motor oil and put in 55 gallon barrels, yea two are full
I see parts for them will no longer be available or made before long
I suggest old mechanics storage up these mowers and engines for grand kids

Could you provide a link for the bearings you purchased?

I'm in Canada but here is a link to them up here. I'm not sure if RUclips is going to let me link it here. I'll put the link in the description as well.

There was nothing wrong with the original belt. I am sure those are just timing marks ;)

Damn, and to think of all those perfectly good belts I've tossed throughout the years.

Sorry, I kind of suck at getting back to people in a timely fashion. I'm glad you ended up having them on hand.

If you show hitting it with emery cloth or a wire wheel for 30 minutes i wont be happy.
