Thank you for sharing the info. Quick question: is there some kind of USB power bank that output higher voltage? The vmount battery is good but not as portable. Wish there is a portable USB power bank solution that can drive nano motor responsively
This one should be able to, i used to run my GH5 for hours with this USB brick: amzn.to/3lpTW1l
@@JustinPhillip Awesome! Thank you.
@@fangshizhu9383 Did it work?
you could also run it through DC input which most monitors have access to. It won't generate 15V of power but still more than 5V.
Nucleus N is awesome . This cable is a must . the 5volt usb is slow too .where as the speed and torque response is very noticeable with the 14 volt tap out . I was going to post a video on this subject but now , no need . The n motor can take from the basic 5v USB up to 18 volts .
Hi Justin
So nice to see how happy you are. :)
The Voltrange to operate the Nano Motor is 5-18V. Thus you are in the safer area with 15.5V.
Josko
Tilta actually sells a cable like this for the Nano when you purchase it directly from Tilta. Great video by the way. I need to start making problem solving videos like this. I have a fully rigged bmpcc4k as well. I have run into a million issues with building.
Just be sure to NOT try to use that cable to power or charge other things (like charge a phone). USB micro standard calls for 5v so most items cannot handle the power provided by a d-tap outlet.
I use a small USB power bank on a Tokina 12-20mm cine 2.9, and it works like a charm. I can actually feel my AC getting a bit aggressive at times. The little motor has some torque!!
Haha I was smiling ear to ear too when it worked 😆 Can't wait to get the nucleus. I've just ordered my first shogun inferno which will be a huge learning curve but great for my aging eyesight 💪
HipStar You’re gonna love it!
Hi Justin, somehow you missed original cable from Tilta: WLC-T04-PC-PTAP. Badda bing, badda boom! :D
Was just having a discussion about this with someone on reddit. He also shoots with the Zeiss Milvus lenses. He said that even after converting the micro usb to d-tap (powered by a V-mount battery) still was not able to get enough torque to move the Milvus 85 or 50mm. Told me that he did not have an issue with his 18 or 35mm but the 85 was too heavy duty...he even said he had heavily greased the 85! I just purchased the Nano and I'm really hoping I don't have to return it for the much more expensive Nucleus M, just to work that Milvus 85mm. Thoughts?! TYIA
What if you dont have a v-mount battery?
To anyone testing the Nucleus N using the Canon Cinema Primes, this is powerful enough to drive the lens at a higher voltage. 5V USB barely calibrates. Set mine at around 15V, works great.
Nice one, I was hoping to buy one to use with my Samyang lenses . Good to know.
Photography In A Click Oh yea, it works fine on those. I never had an issue with my Rokinons. Those and Samyangs are the same lenses.
I use Samyangs with my nano on 5volt and 14.8v . Good drive response with smooth precise control even with the 5v . I highly recommend it for you .
That's great to know that it works with rokinon lenses thanks for the info BL Thackery
Stoked to have found this video! I was having the same issue. Can't wait to try out!
YOU'RE A GOD! Thank you for that tip!!!!
If you look on the Tilta website(tilta.com/shop/nucleus-nano-wireless-follow-focus-motor/)it states "The motor has a 5-18V input tolerance for power via a Micro USB port." Good info. Thanks.
Good to know. Good to know.
I was thinking of getting the more powerful motor, but since this can handle a bit more power with a DTap cable, now the question is, how powerful is it - what lenses can it not handle?
Congrats 3k
Thanks! 🙌🏼
Have you tried a power bank with a power delivery?
Will the Nucleus Nano run without a battery and just the Micro USB attached? If you plug the Alvin's cable into a Dtap hub, will it run all day like the rest of my camera accessories?
Hey Justin, I just bought the Nano and you mentioned you used it with Rokinon Lenses? I have a whole set of Rokinon Cine DS lenses and at 5V the Nano won't even calibrate, it will spin to the stop then has a soft click and won't work. Wondering if this is normal? I'm planning to get a D-Tap to USB cable to pull move Volts from my batteries.
Hey @Justin Philips, it’s been two years since pub this video. Pretty sure you don’t use this system no longer. Would you still recommend this method? Had the Nano N lasts? Did the extra V shortened the lifespan?
Good video, dude.
So would this work with like the ronin s? Because it has 12v out on the front...all I would need is micro usb to ronin s cable
Mine came with the cable for ronin s 12v. It works well
Yeah the Ronin S work really well
Awesome! Just bought the 15, 35, and 50 of the CZ lenses 👍🏻 glad I can use 12v to get them going smoothly. Big Help!
You have any content shot with your CZ set and your Nano?
I don't have a v mount battery and the 5v usb just isn't cutting it, what options do I have. I'd have a samyang cine le s t2.2 and just a little stiff that is causing this to not work right
Byron Phillips if you mean the 16mm t2.2, I agree, it is noticeable stiffer compared to the rest. I suspect your only option is to get a power solution that gives you D-tap. If you can’t afford V-mounts, you can go with Sony NPF and a plate. I was wondering which wireless follow focus pick months ago, and I was almost decided for the nano, but I end up getting the Moza iFocus. So happy so far: plenty of power to move the 16mm quite fast and built in battery.
@@adrinaik93 well I did come up with a solution that works and is allowing me to save for a beefier battery option, I've about a double usb power cable, this is enough to power the motors to turn the lens and be used just fine.
I only run into issue if I auto calibrate then theres just not enough juice for that to work flawlessly. I can manually set the points and then it works like a charm. Could be better but for the time being I'm pleased
Was curious about this seeings how tight it seems some of my FDs are
Doncha love it when it all works out?! :) Gosh, I love happy endings! I have a different wireless FF system, but this was helpful information. Thanks for sharing JP.
What Focus rings are you using? I have the cheap rubber ones and they're not working.
Hi Justin, I recently acquired a Nucleus M and trying to setup with a bunch of Contax Lenses I cinevised myself using K&F adapters. When I setup the lenses with the nucleus M motors (torque set to low) I can see that there's play on the lens mount and this unfortunately translates to the recorded image (not speaking of it being bad for the lens). I also installed a lens support system but the problem persists. Similar like my situation I can see that your Hollywood lens in this video noticeably moves up when it reaches on end of the focus range. What's your experience with this? Have you solved it? Considering getting a more solid Leitax Mount Adapter.
Whaever I have professional hard mounts from Simmod as well. And i still get these issues. Unfortunately its the build of these old lenses due to the fact that the barrels exten when you focus the lens. One work around is to use a lens support. I have a locking cine lock metabones now, that helps somewhat, but the issue is not from the mount, its from the lens barrel itself. Another reason why im thinking about getting rid of all my contax zeiss
@@JustinPhillip That and the bit too much of focus breathing makes me consider similar thoughts :( The one option I'm still considering is finding a cage, or cage accessory that will lock my smaller mirrorless camera tightly from the top and stop a lot of upwards movement. For example something like this: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1449315-REG/smallrig_2241_hot_shoe_lock_for.html Is your cage fastened in a sturdy way to the top of your camera? If after that test the Tilta Nucleus is still unworkable, I'll do a check on a FX9 and see wether the sturdier mount there will help. If it still sucks, I might still keep the Contax's for simpler setups. I wish the tilta had more fine-tuned torque adjustments.
Whaever The cine lock speedbooster helped immensely. I did a video on that a while back. But yes, focus breathing is also an issue
@@JustinPhillip Looked up that video, thanks for that. I'll test out a cine lock mount too. Though I'll see if I can find a passive one since I'm already on full frame. I also tend to avoid Speedboosters because of the increase in Chromatic Aberation especially. Thanks a lot for your help and have a great week up ahead! :D
I saw your other video about the nano with the sigma lenses - do you still think it messes with them because they lack hard stops? My main lens is my sigma 50-100mm and I really like the idea of the nano - but don't want to wreck my lens.
marshallandroxy it definitely will whip that sigma around. The nano is primarily made for lenses with hard stops. It’s too annoying when using it on the sigma art, i never use it with that lens
@@JustinPhillip Gotcha - I appreciate your insight Justin, thanks!
Only V-Mount battery + D-Tap solution can deal with Nano on Contax lens, right? Can’t use tilta side battery handle?
says the voltage on the monitor .. now its pushing around 15v which is twice as much as a 7v from the 5v USB port
Are V Mounts the only batteries with the P Tap connector? Thinking about grabbing this over the ronin motor. I’d mainly use it with the ronin but may switch later, so I’ll need to invest in more batteries.
you could get something like this if you have a ton of Sony L npf batteries: amzn.to/3blGzKH
Justin Phillip appreciate you, will look into this option as well.
Isn't it rather amps than volts that make the difference? I doubt that even the D-tap to micro USB gives out more than 5V... that would be rather ruinous...
Have you tried the Nucleus N with the Sigma 24-70?
Mine is barely able to move it on 5V, which seems odd to me.
I wonder if we can use a USBC power bank which can deliver higher voltage 🤔
hi is there any latency difference D-Taped Nucleus Nano and M?
What speedbooster are u using? Is it c/y to m4/3?
Nico Manansala yupp!
Hi Justin, what follow focus system would you recommend for my GH5 using a Sigma 18-35mm lens please? Wired or Wireless?
Shark I would just save up and get the Nano. Most good follow focuses are more expensive than the Nano and they’re not even wireless
Hey Justin, Thanks man. I'm new to follow focus anyway! :)
Thnx, I never thought of this, lol. Was using a power bank. Now I just brought this bc of you, lol. Thnx again, great info. BTW, you can't use the same wire for your focus wheel or else your focus wheel will get fry bc the focus wheel use only 5v. Any more, say good bye focus motor.
Hieu Tran Yeah but why would you want the focus wheel plugged in to anything anyways? That would defeat the purpose of having a WIRELESS system. Plus batteries last a very long time.
@@JustinPhillip good point, lol. I figure, my power bank and v-mount have a battery indicator level and I attached it on my handle. Easy for me to focus instead reaching and touching the lens.
Thabks for sharing bro! Jejejeje thats the next step jejeje
Thanks for this video. Does the nano motor turn hot? I can give mine a touch but it’s kind of hot. Normal?
never noticed
So what you saying is when i power it with powerbank 5v 2a it will work with photo lenses (Not a lot of resistance) ? And not with cine lenses? I do not own cine lens and not planing anythink like it. And i also not planning riging up v mount plate. Thank you
Pablo the Pilgrim yupp, pretty much
Is that dtap putting out 12v?
kuunami I have no clue 🤷🏻♂️🤣🤣🤔
Should be closer to 14v nominal
I did the same thing, got the dtap cable, and it eventually burned out the nano motor. Was a bit of a bummer because the M doesn't work with the focus handle :(
frogiac Mines still going strong
Nice work Justin! Have a question: I am GH5 user thinking about trying the follow focus for the first time. I have been debating about the fotga dp500iii and the Nucleus Nano wireless follow focus. Do you have any suggestions for starters?
I use both of those. Nano is good for gimbal or i have 1st AC pull focus for me. Works great! The fotga is for when im doing handheld doc style work, also great
@@JustinPhillip Does this mean when you do handheld shot and don't have a 1st AC, the fotga works better?
@@fangshizhu9383 either or. Sometimes follow focus just gets in the way. I havent really used the manual follow focus since like July
@@JustinPhillip Thanks!
Brilliant!
thank you so much
how do you like the 28 f2? I've had two copies and found it to be utterly soft.
yupp, notoriously bad. I recently sold my contax lenses. Movin on up!
@@JustinPhillip I still have two other Contax lenses that I own for almost 15 years now and dearly love BUT I've recently checked out newer lenses and I'm absolutely impressed how much soul these have! (Sigma!) About 10 years ago many modern lenses in my opinion lacked the lushness of older lenses. I think we've entered an era now where there's almost now need to buy vintage stuff except for money concerns or going for a deliberate "crappy" look. cheers!
@@ja-kidnb6416 yeah i kinda disagree. I think the vintage craze is over rated. But to each their own.
@@JustinPhillip Yeah I think so too, I've had more bad experiences with vintage lenses than good ones. I'm all in for new lenses these days and think of replacing even my beloved 50mm and 85mm Contax ones.
Plugged mine into a bp190 and it blew right away,.. now what???
somebody better call Tilta! ;)
@@JustinPhillip im on my 3rd one, I dont know what I keep doing wrong
Since recording this has the motor blown out?? How long do you use it plugged in, when are rest times? What’s the catch hahah
no catch. just used it all day yesterday
The only sad point on Nano N is: it’s not totally wireless. You need at least power the motor through cable.
That’s the same with most if not all wireless follow focus systems, it’s bigger brother the nucleus M still needs power to have a cable to power the motor and even the Alexis ones are the same
Sean Maguire the pdmovie air 2 and moza ifocus don’t need external power but they might some lag
