Get the new Nucleus Nano ii Control Handle 👉geni.us/GripII or on Amazon geni.us/tiltaGrip Do you think it's worth the upgrade or are you gonna stick to the focus system you're using now?
its as if tilta spent the entire r&d budget on the new design and new features of this handle and totally forgot about the attachment locations especially for mounting directly to cameras or cages. this seems more designed towards only being used for a shoulder mount handle and definitely not for handheld. Great review as always chad
Thanks! Yeah, I totally agree. It seems as though it was really designed with shoulder rigs and the Ronin gimbals in mind. I don't understand why cause the previous focus grip was awesome and worked perfectly for handheld! Hopefully they come out with some new mounting accessories.
There was another version that was released inbetween these two - Tiltaing Advanced Focus Handle. It had multiple mounting accessories on the side (arri rosette, nato rail etc) and was rotatable. Works great with nucleus nano (v1).
I have that handle and really like it.nice just ordered a cable which is supposed to allow you to use that handle with the nucleus nano 2 motor. So when I get it, we’ll see. 🤷🏽♂️
@angelhepburn123 I'm not sure what they meant by reprogramming the motor, but I did have to ensure I was on the latest firmware release for both motor and wheel. When I connected the cable from my advanced side handle to the motor, it just simply worked.. with no real setup.
@@angelhepburn123ok….i think i replicated what you may be experiencing…Firstly, it only seems to work on Type C 1… not on the usb type c port 2 of the motor. Secondly, make sure the motor is blinking “pink and red”. It should eventually go to solid pink only, but if it does not, hold the CAL button on the handle and the motor should start spinning. You can manually/physically stop the spinning which will cause it to spin counter clockwise and repeat the physical stopping of it, and you should now have it working.
Of course, thanks for watching! Honestly I really wanted to love the new control grip and waited a year for it to come out, but there's still a lot of room for improvement.
You have to have the wheel attached to the handle to get the record button on the handle to work. It’s super annoying but I messaged Tilta and they said it’s a highly requested feature so they imagine it will be fixed in a future update
Tilta lately puts products on the market before actual testing..had real issue with cages for zcam e2 S6, finally gave up after 3 tries and went with small rig
Thx man! This helped so much, I was going insane with how to set this up, it just didn’t work. Also a super important thing to know, the advanced side handle does not work with the nucleus nano 2!

Wow… it’s like you’re in my head!!! Any updates on the handheld mounting dituation? I’m about to purchase a NATO female to NATO female to have it on the left side of my A7S3 KondorBlue rig. Do you think I might be risking damaging the six connecting pins? Awesome review. Dubbed and liked. Cheers
Can you control two motors with just the handle? I know on the wheel you can run two motors, but was curious if you can do the same thing with just the handle?
I am still confused about why there is only one Bluetooth focus wheel that has been made (only checked for the Blackmagic pocket camera), by a Chinese company with not as reliable functionality unfortunately. And yet, none of the big players produced such device. technically, as long as your lens has electronic contacts, the build in focus motor can be accessed via camera or, via Bluetooth > camera > lens, saving weight, costs, an external motor and most of all, time! Making a Bluetooth follow focus wheel so valuable and yet no one produces it, what am I missing here?
that's a great question! I'm not totally sure why, but what I know is that for a long time most of the camera companies had their firmware totally locked down. It wasn't until recently that they started opening it more up to apps and devices controlling the camera. Blackmagic opened it up first, Sony and other manufacturers are starting to now also. It would be cool to have a focus wheel that controlled the electronic internal focus motor of the lens. But honestly, I think one reason that hasn't happened is cause Auto Focus is so good, why would you use it? I usually only use manual focus on my cinema manual focus lenses.
@@chadwin Ah, good point. Makes sense that Blackmagic was the first one to receive such devices then, also, I ordered the bluetooth focus wheel off of a Chinese site now and will test it. I am a Video producer and I'm using The pocket 6k, so I am manually pulling focus and so do most other video/film producers. The problem is (Which I had last time on a production too, is that i have to change lenses during production sometimes, so a bluetooth follow focus that doesn't need any gears is pretty much what I need to up the quality of life during production haha. here's the device I ordere, maybe u find it interesting: ruclips.net/video/-ktLNpj3WKc/видео.html
you're likely not looking at voltage regulations - ie if you are supply too much or too little power you can run into these issues. V-Mounts typically have regulation done internally or label 12v etc. for accessory powering. That is why the Focus Motor was dying. I use the fully size Nucleus off of a Small Rig 99 and never run into power off issues. I don't see any reason to upgrade my Nucleus as it's been rock solid since purchasing.
There may have been an update, but nothing I've seen that make the Nano i Focus grip compatible. If you find it, shoot me a link cause I need that haha!

Yeah, that would be nice. It's great that they even have the option to use the focus wheel with the BM app! The power handle looks nice, great if you don't need the focus conttol options too. I love Tilta--most their products really impress me!
Yeah, the grip technically works with any camera since it’s just controlling the focus motor on your lens. But if you wanna electronically connect it to the camera for start/stop, there’s a list of supported cams on their website. Only works with the hand wheel right now though
Yeah, the original Nucleus Nano focus grip is very similar to that and it works well for me! The Advanced focus handle came out in 2020, so it’s getting older now and I don’t think it’s compatible with the Nano ii. It also has the problem with the battery on the bottom that there’s no door, just a little quick release tab.

The lens does move at the hard stops of my lens, I didn't address this in the video, but it's mostly because I'm adapting Canon EF glass to Sony E mount. But yes, a lens support pushing the lens up continuously might help reduce play.
It’s very odd your system has so many bugs. Mine works flawlessly. The only major issue I found is that the handle should have both NATO rails. I manage to mount the handles and the wheel for handheld, but I had to bought an extra handle.
